Valve makes changes to Dota 2's TI10 battle pass after community complaints

After almost a week of discontent from Dota 2 players about this year's The International battle pass, Valve has addressed the concerns by putting out an update that increases the speed at which you can level up.

While the battle pass sold incredibly quickly when it was launched last week, generating over $12 million already for TI10's prize pot, players quickly realised that it was not as generous as previous years. Fans believed the grind for this year's pass was harder and rewarded players for spending more cash. There is a similar amount of content in the pass, but it's been spread across more levels, requiring a lot of play time, money, or both.

However, Valve has now made progressing through the battle pass a little easier after making a number of changes in an update. In an accompanying post to the update on June 1, Valve says: "We recognise that players still feel that they wish playing granted more, so we have [made] a few changes."

Dota 2 Update - June 1st, 2020

We've read feedback from the community that leveling feels harder this year. We looked into how things compare so far to last year. For battle pass players of all levels, on average players have earned 1.95% more free levels than last year. If we consider only players who after a week were below level 200, on average they have earned 7.91% more free levels than last year. However, we recognize that players still feel that they wish playing granted more, so we have a few changes included in this update:

- Wagering battle point rewards are now increased by 50%
- Guild contract battle point rewards are now increased by 100%
- Sideshop gold for Recycling is increased by 65%
- Sideshop gold for Guild contracts and upgrades are increased by 100%

All these changes are effective as of this update. For sideshop gold earned through previous recycles, we will be granting the extra gold over the next few hours.

Dota 2's biggest battle pass spender is the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia

The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud is a powerful man with a lot of money, but he also likes Dota 2. Like many of the game's fans this week, the prince has been sucked in by this year's battle pass, and he's already topped the the leaderboard with a $9,344 spend.

The prince, who goes by the in-game name Purrrrrfect Devil Angel Yukeo, is known for his spending habits in Valve's popular MOBA. In 2018, the 35-year-old, who's also serving as the country's deputy prime minister, spent approximately $42,000 getting his battle pass to level 101,127 and in 2019, he spent $21,000 to reach level 51,354. This year's battle pass has only been out for a week and he's so far spent $9,344 and climbed to level 22,435 - that's more than 11,000 levels higher than the second placed player.

The prince is a pretty active Dota 2 player. He's put thousands of hours into the game and currently likes playing the support role as Crystal Maiden. He's also ploughed through more than 10,000 games, earning a respectable Legend IV rank in the process.

Dota 2 fans aren't happy with The International 2020 battle pass

One week on from release, the new Dota 2 battle pass has raised more than $11 million for The International's prize pool. However, not everyone is happy with their purchase. If you've browsed the game's subreddit recently, you'll have noticed a series of complaints from players who believe the pass is more like a tiered payment system this year, rather than a legitimate battle pass.

The pass, which launched last Monday (May 25), comes with a new guilds system, a new summer event, and more. It also adds three new Arcana items and two Personas skins to the game, but some players feel these cosmetic items are unttainable by grinding the pass and they'll have to spend more money to get them.

The level one pass costs $9.99 to pick up, but players can choose to purchase passes that grant them 50 or 100 levels if they want. However, the Pudge Persona is unlocked at level 255, the Anti Mage Persona at level 305, the Wraith King Arcana at level 375, the Queen of Pain Arcana at level 445, and the Wild Ranger Arcana at level 575. Since the average player completes about 100-150 levels during the lifetime of the pass, some think this is unfair.

Dota 2's International Battle Pass is here - with guilds, new mode, Battle Gauntlet, more

The 2020 edition of the Dota 2 International, the MOBA game's biggest annual tournament, might have been postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, but Valve still has a hefty battle pass packed with new content for fans to sink their pearly white teeth into. This year's Dota 2 International pass has landed, bringing a hearty batch of new features and rewards to the game.

As posted by Valve on the multiplayer game's site, there's a huge new feature in the battle pass: Guilds. "There's nothing more satisfying than smashing an Ancient with a great group of friends, and then doing the same thing again and again," the studio posts. As you'd expect, the new feature lets you group up with a bunch of pals to "ensure that you always have the right team at your back on that road to victory".

The all-new feature offers daily contracts, challenges, and even a chat system via Steam for your Guild. Earn points as a Guild and you'll get access to special rewards, like "emoticons, bonus challenges, in-game Guild Banner upgrades, Battle Pass bonuses, and more."
