Revisit the Silent Hill series in this Amnesia mod

Playing any of the classic Silent Hill games isn't easy these days. The PC port was a cold 18 years ago, and the last remaster was in 2012. For such a beloved horror game series it's criminally hard to play now, so a modder has created a refresher using Amnesia to make sure we remember it fondly.

Silent Hill: Respite is a visual novel mod of Amnesia: The Dark Descent that plays as a strange, in-universe memoriam of Silent Hill's better days. You start in a small diner, on one side is the mark of series antagonists The Order, and on the other is a notice board full of characters that are either dead or alive, each with a short description attached. Four songs from the collective soundtracks by Akira Yamaoka play as you wander around, or stare out into the thick fog outside.

Strewn around the room are Easter eggs and references, a guide to which you can watch below in a developer's commentary from creator TrollForce. The whole thing is meant as a small celebration of the first four Silent Hill games, and the community that still loves them. "Entries such as Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4: The Room are collected as memories and to show what the series has meant to the community," the ModDB description reads. "Team Silent and Silent Hill may be gone, but the memories and the lasting impact on horror will forever be in the hearts and minds of the fans of the revolutionary series."

Amnesia: Rebirth - a new game in the Amnesia universe

March 6, 2020

Ten years ago Amnesia: The Dark Descent heralded a new generation of horror. Five years ago, SOMA took us to fresh depths of terror. Now, steel yourself for the next nightmare as we at Frictional Games prepares to release Amnesia: Rebirth this autumn. A new story set in the world of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Rebirth represents yet another evolutionary leap for Frictional games, challenging players to remain calm in the face of unimaginable terror.

Get a glimpse of what’s to come in today’s announcement trailer and first in-game images.

Amnesia: Rebirth is a new descent into darkness in the iconic Amnesia series. Set in the desolate landscape of the Algerian desert, the game will focus on new character Tasi Trianon as she sets out on a harrowing journey through devastation and despair, personal terror and pain, while exploring the limits of human resilience.

You can’t let out a breath. The creature is only inches away. Its sole purpose - to feed off your terror. And so you crouch in the dark, trying to stop the fear rising, trying to silence what lies within you.

Retracing Tasi’s journey and pulling together the fragments of a shattered past will be the only chance to survive the pitiless horror that threatens to devour you. Time is against you. Still, you must continue, step by step, knowing that if you fail you will lose everything.

Amnesia: Rebirth is scheduled for release in autumn 2020 on PC and PlayStation 4. Wishlist on Steam in order to follow along with the updates as they are released.

恐怖游戏迷们的好消息!《失忆症:黑暗后裔》已有汉化字幕。快到Steam上获取!

Hard Mode now also available for Linux and Mac

Are you a Linux or a Mac user? Amnesia: The Dark Descent's Hard Mode update is now creeping onto your platforms too!

Don't know what the Hard Mode is? Here's a reminder.

It is really just as the title suggests: a mode that makes it harder to beat the game. You know, in case it wasn’t stressful enough for you.

The Hard Mode has the following features:

- Autosaves are disabled, and manual saving costs 4 tinderboxes
- Sanity dropping to zero results in death
- Less oil and tinderboxes throughout the levels
- Monsters are faster, spot the player more easily, deal more damage and stay around for longer
- There is no danger music when the monsters are near.

So in summary: the environments are harsher, the monsters more unforgiving, insanity is deadly, and death is final – unless you pay a toll.

You can pick between normal mode and Hard Mode when starting a new game of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The mode changes some fundamental elements of the game, and therefore can’t be changed halfway through.

Beating the game on Hard Mode will earn you a new trophy called Masochist. Because, you know, you pretty much have to be one to complete the mode.

The mode affects the Illuminatus achievement, which you can’t get during playing in Hard Mode as it reduces the amount of tinderboxes throughout the level.

Missed our release last week? You can also play the Hard Mode on Windows!
