PUBG's latest update shrunk the number of bots

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been hitting a bit different since the battle royale game's last update. Players were swift to notice that each game has notably fewer bots, which is going down pretty well if we do say so ourselves.

Using a service called PUBG lookup, players previously found that they were roughly getting 20 bots per game. Since the recent update, though, that's dipped to fewer. One player posts the stats from someone's past ten games, showing that they ran into 870 human players and 41 bots. We currently don't know if it's a bug or things will stay this way. PUBG's community manager Henry G did say that he was "waiting to hear back from the team" regarding that. We've also reached out for comment and will update this story if we hear back.

PUBG also got some weapon tuning in the update, too. The VSS's damage has been bumped up by two, while the mini-14 and scar-l now hit for one more point of damage each. The SLR and BERYL didn't fare as well, however, with both weapons getting their recoil increased.

PUBG Studio might be making an open-world, sci-fi shooter

We know the PUBG universe is set to expand dramatically, what with PUBG New State, The Callisto Protocol, and the prospective PUBG 2. Another upcoming game has been added to that list, an open-world, sci-fi shooter, and we have some details thanks to job listings.

The information is courtesy of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds leaker PlayerIGN, who went through 14 recent openings posted by PUBG Studio that were labelled for something new currently called Vertical. After translating from Korean, and cross-referencing certain keywords and phrases, he found that Vertical is planned to be an "open-world, action and shooting game" with puzzles.

It'll be heavy on the sci-fi, featuring cyborgs, mechas, vehicles, monsters, and tribes, and it's being built in Unreal Engine 4. This all lines up with New State's use of drones and other futuristic tech, and The Callisto Protocol being a horror game set on a prison in one of the moons of Jupiter. PlayerIGN used these same methods to predict New State months before it was confirmed, when it was project XTRM and speculates that if this is PUBG 2, it would mean the sequel's shedding the series' battle royale game roots. But that's just a possibility to chew on for the time-being.

PUBG's drive-by tactic is getting nerfed in an upcoming update

One of PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds' most irritating tactics is getting nerfed in a future update. A PUBG dev took to Twitter to let fans know that the drive-by tactic is getting balanced in update 11.2, which should be the next patch the battle royale game gets.

"Hearing that passenger shooting will be nerfed in PC Update 11.2 - following community feedback," the developer tweets. "Specific balancing is still being worked out. For consoles, we're seeing that drive-by shootings are a less-used tactic, but we'll be monitoring."

If you've been left out of the loop, the drive-by tactic refers to players shooting out of the passenger side of a vehicle - shocking, I know. The playstyle has been relatively popular, though, since aiming from vehicles was buffed in an update last year. There's little recoil now, so it's not too hard to balance shooting with aiming out of a moving vehicle. We had some idea that the nerf was coming, though we didn't know when. Another PUBG staffer mentioned in the game's Discord recently that the team had passed along feedback to the development team.

2021 PUBG ESPORTS changes to the point system

Hello PUBG Esports Fans!

For the majority of PUBG Esports so far, we’ve followed the Standard and Universal PUBG Esports Ruleset “S.U.P.E.R” with very few changes or deviations. During PGI.S, we adjusted the tournament format to place more importance on winning matches. Our overall goal with these changes was to bring back the intensity and accomplishment of being the last team standing, which has always been the heart of Battle Royale. We saw tons of excitement surrounding the Chicken Dinner focused matches and a new level of performance from our pro teams when they had a singular goal to focus on. With that in mind, we are making some changes to the winner decision method of our SUPER point system.

Here’s what will be changing in 2021:

Proposed SUPER Changes
  • The winner of the match is the team who wins the Chicken Dinner
  • The winning team of the Series will be determined by the number of Chicken Dinners won
    • In the event of a tie, total kills earned during the series will be used as a tiebreaker

We want the Chicken Dinner to mean something again since currently the winner is not always clear due to complicated score tallying, and this new system will ensure that a winner is determined as a match concludes. The moment of excitement should be when the game is won, not when the scoreboard pops up. These changes will take effect when PCS4 begins in June, however some regional preliminary matches will use different systems in order to give teams more time to prepare for the change.

As with everything, we’d love to hear your feedback on the new system once PCS4 wraps up. The current point system has served us well for a long time and definitely has legitimacy as an esports scoring system, we’d just like to get to a point where playing PUBG and watching PUBG Esports both evoke the same feelings without having to learn the teams you’re watching have different goals than your squads do.

Thanks for all the love and support you’ve shown PUBG Esports, especially during this last, very difficult year due to the pandemic. Your passion and excitement have helped us continue to put out fun and competitive esports events despite all the difficulties.

Here’s to another great year of PUBG Esports and we’ll see you all at PCS4!

PUBG Lite is shutting down this month

The writing has maybe been on the wall for PUBG Lite for a while. The free-to-play, low spec version of Playerunknown's Battlegrounds ditched its in-game currency in November 2020, becoming completely free. Now a notice from the development team says that the game will close down forever on April 29th.
