PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS News

PUBG map Taego was initially based on Seoul, but it "turned out much differently"

Earlier this month, PUBG's new map Taego dropped, giving players the chance to try out the first new 8x8 map since Miramar. Set in South Korea, the map has a real mixture of environments, with towns, compounds, and rural terrain, and it turns out it was initially based on the country's capital city, though it ended up turning out "much differently" to what the devs expected.

That's according to PUBG in-game unit lead Taehyun Kim, who we spoke to about the new Taego map. "At first, we designed Taego based on Seoul, the capital city of South Korea," he tells us. "However, the final product turned out much differently than we expected.

It sounds like this evolution into something pretty different from the devs' initial intentions happened over the course of playtesting and adjusting it, as Kim explains. "We tested the map every week and gradually tweaked it," Kim tells us. "Taego is the product of our careful considerations and experiences as world developers and players. To be specific, we first find references for rivers, swamps, and villages and try to implement all of it as accurately as possible."

PUBG LABS mode lets you score goals and turn into a Premier League footballer

Have you ever wanted to parachute into PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds as famed Premier League footballer Heung-Min Son in search of an elusive chicken dinner? Well, now's your chance - sort of. The PUBG team is testing a football mode in LABS, where they tinker with ideas and experimental modes to see what sticks out.

PUBG's Futsal mode places players in two different teams on a field with various zones. You run face-first into the football to make it move, and there's no offsides or fouls, which are reasonably essential considerations as you can bonk someone with a sickle in this mode. There's a Play Zone that features Buff Zones where you can go to boost your health and movement stats and find a blunt object to bop the other team over the noggin with. Meanwhile, the Penalty Zone features a shield you can use to protect your goal and is where you'll respawn if you get sliced up by a machete.

Each match lasts five minutes each with three minutes of overtime if things are tied after regular time. Now, though, the good part. The player who scores the most goals in the game will turn into Heung-Min Son and benefit from "a full boost with an extra speed increase until the end of the match". Male characters get Son's face, hair, and uniform, whereas female players get to keep their face and hair.

LABS: Futsal Mode

Hello Survivors!

LABS is where we experiment with unique and often wholly new PUBG experiences, and this time around is no different. Futsal Mode is all about soccer, with a side of combat, and players who score the most goals will transform into soccer superstar, Premier League player "Sonny" Heung-Min Son!

The Futsal Field has different areas with buffs and weapon spawns, so each player has their own role and place in the team.

Read on for full gameplay details.
Futsal Field
Play Zone
The Buff Zone is created and spawns weapons on a regular basis. When a player enters the Buff Zone, that player consumes the buff automatically.

Make sure to keep an eye out for spawned weapons in Buff Zones, pick them up, and attack your enemies while you fight your way to victory.
  • Buff Area spawn intervals: 30 seconds
  • Buff types
    • Gain 50 HP
    • 1.2x movement speed increase for 15 seconds.
  • Weapon types
    • Frying Pan
    • Sickle
    • Machete
    • Crowbar
    • Sawed-Off + 12 Gauge x2 (spawns at a lower rate but once equipped, it's a surefire way to knock down your opponents)
Penalty Zone
The Penalty Zone plays an important role, as it's both a respawn area and spawns the Shield used to protect your goal.

  • Respawns
    • After death, players respawn in the Penalty Zone and are invincible for three seconds. Players cannot move out of the zone until the invincibility has worn off.
  • The Shield
When a player equipped with the Shield moves out of the Penalty Zone the Shield disappears and a new Shield spawns in the Penalty Zone.
Match Rules
Victory Conditions
  • The team to score more goals by the end of the match will claim victory.
Tied Score
  • In the event of a tie, the match will enter overtime. If scores remain tied after overtime, the winner will be decided by most kills or the team with the MVP.

  • Matches will be played in two five-minute halves, with three minutes of overtime being played automatically if the score is tied after regular time.
    • Matches have 5 seconds of preparation time prior to kick-off
FAQ
How can players control the ball?
  • Move towards the ball and make contact to dribble.
    • The faster you're moving when you make contact, the further the ball will go. Try sprinting at the ball when you want to shoot or make a long pass.
  • You can use melee attacks such as punching to attack opponents.
Are there fouls?
  • No. Feel free to use aggression with your enemies whilst trying to take possession.
  • There are no offsides, lineouts, or handling fouls. Do whatever you want and can to secure the win!
Is there a goalie?
  • We provide a Shield so that one player from each team can defend their goal.
  • The Shield covers a large area and can also be used to push away your opponents! Try to take advantage of this feature when defending.
    • The Shield can be equipped and used only within the penalty area. If you cross the penality line with the Shield equipped, it'll be unequipped automatically.
How do you become Son Heung-min?!
  • The player who scores the most goals during the match can transform into "Sonny", the superhero.
    • For male characters, Son's face, hair, and uniform are applied. For female characters, face and hair remain the same.
    • If someone else takes the lead, they will then become Son Heung-min.
  • Once you transform into Son, you benefit from a full boost with an extra speed increase until the end of the match.
Notes When Playing in LABS
• LABS games do not provide XP or gameplay rewards

Castlevania anime showrunner is now adapting PUBG for screen

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds doesn't seem to lend itself to an animated screen adaptation, but it's happening anyway, and Castlevania producer and showrunner Adi Shankar is working on it. Krafton announced as much today, with Shankar tasked with creating and showrunning the animated project, which doesn't appear to have a network or streaming service attached to it as yet...
