The best games to play over Christmas

Christmas, in essence, is a time for catching up. Each year, people spend time with family and get all the latest updates on the lives of friends. We PC gamers on the other hand have something much more vital to do in the process of whiling away those many hours of light intoxication: we have a pile of shame to tackle.

It grows ever more insurmountable each year: saddled by the existential need to eat, sleep, and work, promising games inevitably slip by the wayside. As games get longer and more become fully-fledged 'services', we are increasingly encouraged to play fewer games, but each of them for longer. Nobody tells us where the extra hours are supposed to come from.

Christmas, then, is an important time for gamers. Each year, on Jesus's special day, we can pretend to our royally-soused selves that we can conquer the heap of games we picked up in many a Steam sale, only to remain untouched. The following games are the ones you should think about releasing from their digital purgatory this holiday season.

Thunder Tier One isn't just an exciting new game, it's a test bed for PUBG changes

One of the hidden gems of The Game Awards' premieres was the first look at Thunder Tier One - an intriguing, top-down strategy shooter created by PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' head of action and gunplay, Pawel Smolewski.

While shooters in both first and third-person have proved popular in 2020, top-down shooters are certainly something of a niche genre. However, what started as a passion project for Smolewski soon grew into a full-blown idea with a number of colleagues jumping aboard to help develop Thunder Tier One in their spare time. But after taking some time to focus on PUBG, Smolewski is back working on the game - but this time he has the help of PUBG Corp's parent company, Krafton.

As you'd expect for someone so involved in PUBG, Smolewski has applied a lot of his experience behind the scenes of the battle royale to Thunder Tier One. But, the games have a symbiotic relationship, and Thunder Tier One has actually worked as a test bed for a number of PUBG gameplay changes in the past.

PUBG Season 10's new chopper hunts you as you play

December 16 PUBG Season 10 is now live on PC. Original story follows.

PUBG Season 10 goes live next week, on December 16, and introduces a new map for players to explore. By far the biggest change in the update, Haven is PUBG's smallest map yet - but it's bursting with new content and experiences.

32 players will drop into Haven in Duos teams, and exploring the urban map will be different to any PUBG game yet. Most of the 1x1 map is packed with densely populated buildings - the abandoned factories of an industrial town left to rot. However, it won't just be other players who are roaming the dim backstreets of Haven.

A mysterious company has hired an elite force of mercenaries to patrol the streets. Players will have to either hide from Pillar, or take them head-on - but beware, they have a lot of firepower at their disposal. Pillar soldiers are not only heavily armoured and heavily armed, they also employ a Scout Helicopter to patrol the map, and send armoured trucks touting heavy weapons after you if you're spotted. We don't know if the map will playable in PUBG ranked modes yet, but we'll keep you updated.

PUBG Season 10 brings new urban map Haven and AI-controlled enemy faction

December 16, 2020 PUBG Season 10 is now live for PC players. Original story (with a new peek at the season's skins) follows.

PUBG Season 10 is fast approaching, and its first patch has landed on the battle royale game's test servers for a round of, well, testing. The PUBG 10.1 update is kicking off the new season with a bang, too - there's a brand-new map called Haven on the way, along with a new enemy faction "offering an entirely new gameplay element not seen in existing Battlegrounds", survivor pass, and more.

As detailed in the multiplayer game's test server notes, Haven is "an industrial island in the rust belt of America". It pits players against each other in the streets and rooftops of a "dense, 1×1 urban map" which can support up to 32 players at once, in either Duos or one-man Duos modes. Its various regions include carbon steelworks with loot lurking in its "fiery depths" and "gunplay at all ranges" and coal yards ("a sniper's paradise!"), as well as industrial and residential zones, an overpass, and docks.

It's a seasonal map, so will only be available for the duration of PUBG's tenth season, and its match length is shorter than most other maps' offerings. "You'll earn around 70% of the BP compared to a full-length match on another map," PUBG Corp. says.
