PUBG's publisher is making a new game based on a series of Korean fantasy novels

The company that now owns PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Krafton, is working on a new game based on the series of popular Korean fantasy novels The Bird That Drinks Tears. While there's not a lot of information on what the game itself will look like, Krafton has enlisted the help of a Hollywood concept artist to establish a look and ambience for the game.

Dubbed Project Windless, Krafton's plans for The Bird That Drinks Tears extends beyond a single game - it aims to create a "larger multimedia franchise" based on the intellectual property. The novels are set in a distinctively Korean fantasy world that's populated with mythical creatures like dokkaebi (sometimes thought of as a 'Korean goblin' or nature spirit) and naga, and characters learn the Korean folk wrestling style of ssireum.

Artist Ian McCaig, who has done concept art for Star Wars characters and franchises like Harry Potter and The Avengers, is working with Krafton to visualise novelist Yeong-do Lee's universe. An early piece of art shows a wooden structure built high on a stone tor above the desert, with a long platform extending on one side.

I never got into PUBG. I didn’t enjoy putting all that time and effort into the game only to die once and be returned to the main menu. That’s why I spend my battle royale funtimes in Warzone, where I can at least punch my way back into the game. But in Playerunknown's Battlegrounds’s 2021 roadmap, they’ve announced a new map that will allow players to respawn. Depending on the turnaround time, I might just have to get back into Plunkbat.

PUBG's "year of the large map" features Miramar makeover and two new maps

The developers of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds have clearly been hard at work this year. The upcoming Update 12.1 is set to ship a whole host of new features, updates, tweaks, and even a full blown remaster for Miramar. Additionally, two new 8x8 maps, codenamed 'Tiger' and 'Kiki' respectively, have also been revealed and are set to be released at some point before early 2022.

Having released a number of smaller maps last year - Karakin, Paramo, and Haven - the PUBG team has announced 2021 to be "the year of the large map". For Miramar, this is set to include the biggest update to the map since its release back in late 2017. According to the dev blog, this involves "many of the new technologies we've employed in our newer maps, including lighting, performance, graphical fidelity, topography, and of course special features."

Indeed, as we can see from the patch notes, Miramar's contrast has been turned right down, and combined with lighting tweaks to create a softer, more arid look. A lot of the clutter that was there before is now absent, which should help players more easily navigate their way around. It'll also allow players to better enjoy the crispy new textures added to a number of the map's buildings and objects.

PUBG's latest Miramar map rework is on the test server

PUBG has got another Miramar rework, and you can try it out for yourself. The PUBG team has taken to Twitter to tell fans that update 12.1 is now on the test server, giving you a chance to try out the update before it hits live servers next week.

The developer's goals for the rework are to provide a smoother experience with reduced object clutter, less troublesome coastlines, and adjusted cover across the map. You've got some visual improvements to terrain and foliage, more cliffs for easier to indicate areas that you can't climb easily, and less clutter around building entrances.

You're also getting a new gun to try out. The Lynx AMR is PUBG's first anti-material rifle, which means it'll allow you to damage military equipment and armour, alongside regular players and vehicles, of course. You'll need to savour your ammo, however, as you won't be able to refill your clip once you're running on empty. You're also getting a new Miramar-exclusive quad bike, a weapon skin upgrade system you can use to add new features and styles to your guns, and a scrap shop where you can spend, well, scrap from contraband creates on more gear.
