PUBG is going free-to-play next year

PUBG Battlegrounds is going free-to-play in January 2022. The low admission fee of zero pounds was announced at The Game Awards, which is a pretty good deal if you’re looking to participate in a battle royale that’s still very much alive and kicking. Players can also pay for Battlegrounds Plus, an account upgrade that’ll net you some extra in-game unlocks. And don't worry, if you already own the game you'll get that upgrade for free.

PUBG, one of the original battle royale games that popularized the genre, is transitioning to a free-to-play model on January 12, 2022. Announced during The Game Awards, this news comes five years after the game’s initial release into early access on PC, before it expanded to multiple other platforms.

As a replacement for the premium model, PUBG will receive an optional premium account upgrade called Battlegrounds Plus. This one-time purchase provides access to a selection of additional features otherwise not available to those with a free Basic account.

You must link your KRAFTON ID to your platform accounts (PC/Xbox/PlayStation®/etc) to receive the event rewards. The KRAFTON ID you used for pre-registration will automatically receive the rewards once you access the game after maintenance on January 12, 2022. Current players who already have their KRAFTON IDs linked will automatically receive their rewards after maintenance on January 12, 2022.
Your rewards will be available in the CUSTOMIZE menu.
If your account is linked to multiple platforms, the rewards will be sent to every platform account.
You will not be able to receive rewards if you do not access the game and link your KRAFTON ID to your platform account(s) by March 31, 2022, 11:59 PM (UTC).

PUBG is going free to play next month

The battle royale game formerly known as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will go free to play January 12. The move has been rumoured for a while, and publisher Krafton confirmed at The Game Awards that PUBG: Battlegrounds will indeed join the ranks of free-to-play battle royales.

PUBG: Battlegrounds ran a free week earlier this year in partnership with Kpop group Blackpink, and rumours at the time suggested the move was a trial for the developers to measure the impact the move to a free-to-play business model might have on the constantly evolving battle royale. Those seem to have been correct, as tonight's Game Awards reveal confirms.

Krafton provided a couple quick factoids about PUBG during the reveal as well, such as the fact that players have spent a combined total of more than 14 billion hours in PUBG since it launched five years ago. In the past couple months, we've seen Baby Shark and mountain bikes make their way into the game.
