Corporations have taken us beyond the bounds of our solar system, but the enterprises that built life on the galactic frontier have charged a heavy price. Business is now both god and king, as middle managers take on the roles of regional governors and a new religion preaches your place among the corporate gears. You're going to do your job until you can afford the rental fees on your grave site, or you're going to come out branded an outlaw.
In The Outer Worlds, you are very much one of those outlaws. Obsidian's grimly satirical RPG puts you in the boots of a prospective colonist who's freshly unfrozen after decades in suspended animation. But you're the only one who's awake. The Board - a bickering cabal of corporations that runs things in the colony - has left your colony ship to die, and you've only come through thanks to the somewhat-mad science of one Phineas Welles. The Board's got secrets and Welles needs resources to awaken the rest of the frozen colonists, which leaves you to hop between the colonies in search of both answers and chemicals.
While The Outer Worlds has been compared to Fallout ever since its debut - a combination of retro-futuristic aesthetics, first-person roleplaying, and involvement from the series' original creators will do that - in action it feels almost nothing like the Black Isle classics or the post-Bethesda open worlds. Instead, this comes across more like a lost mid-2000s BioWare game.

When is the Outer Worlds coming to Steam? Thanks to an announcement from Epic Games - which contains information on more than a dozen storefront exclusive releases - we know that The Outer Worlds wouldn't be launching on Steam. Thanks to a tweet from Obsidian, though, we do know that it's coming to Steam one year after its launch on "other exclusive digital PC platforms".
The sci-fi RPG, from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division, was initially only available on Epic and the Microsoft store, but it's coming to Valve's service very soon. Epic's keynote also talks about the company's partnership with Ubisoft as well as several exclusive titles such as Afterparty and Phoenix Point. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, now.
The Outer Worlds features a player-driven story - where your choices affect story development, your character build, and the end game. As Dustin explains in our The Outer Worlds review, the satire and moral dilemmas don't always mesh though that doesn't detract from a pleasant experience overall. The game also explores the idea of The Outer Worlds flaws, as you can take a debuff against common enemies in exchange for one of The Outer Worlds perks. While the disadvantage can be frustrating, this unique approach to creating the best Outer Worlds builds adds a fresh layer of depth to the experience.

How long is The Outer Worlds? The open-world RPG came out around a year ago now, and is coming to Steam very soon - but if you're like me you're probably wondering how long it is. I know when I'm going to put my hard-earned cash into a game, I like to think about its value, and that means how long it's going to keep me entertained. £50 is a lot to spend on something if you're only going to spend a few hours enthralled.
This isn't to say that all games should be judged on how long they are, no no. I don't think if you made Ghost Recon: Breakpoint longer, it would automatically get better, and I quite like the length of Control just as it is. There is plenty of fun to be had which doesn't involve hours being poured into the game.
As our The Outer Worlds review explains, among its many qualities are the chance to become a friendly neighbourhood Cupid and play wingman/woman to one of your party, or maybe its laugh-out-loud (or 'lol' as cool kids say) humour is for you. Our reviewer Dustin Bailey does caution, however, that between these moments of genuine brilliance The Outer Worlds tends to meander, with a lot of 'connective tissue' where you're not really doing a lot.

Your Outer Worlds companions are not just the string to your bow, but also a friend to make evil corporate space feel a little less lonely. You can have up to two companions in The Outer Worlds, but which two, or one, or none will make the cut?
Companions in The Outer Worlds aren't, unfortunately, stood in a line-up at the beginning of the campaign waiting to be chosen. Instead, you'll need to explore the different planets and complete individual quests to win the trust and loyalty of a companion so they'll follow you into the unknown.
Companions, like yourself, have their own Outer Worlds weapons and armour, as well as offering boosts and a special combat ability unlocked if your inspiration skill is at level 20. Outer Worlds companions perks mean you'll be able to select new skills from a perk table, each unique to that companion. Here's where you can find each of the companions in The Outer Worlds and what you'll need to do to win their loyalty.
