Ahead of Avowed, The Outer Worlds is now free with Prime Gaming

While they both sit under the Microsoft umbrella, Obsidian is setting itself up to rival Bethesda with its Skyrim-inspired action RPG, Avowed, which is set to release in just a few weeks. Before then, it's well worth checking out the studio's earlier Fallout-inspired game, The Outer Worlds, which is completely free for Prime Gaming subscribers.

Fallout creator asks why triple-A RPGs focus on violence, doesn't provide very hopeful answer

Original Fallout designer Tim Cain, also known for co-directing The Outer Worlds at Obsidian, has published a video responding to a player's question about why violence is the "default" path in so many big budget RPGs. That's specifically RPGs with "AAA" budgets, whatever AAA means these days. Cain is, of course, well aware that there are many RPGs from smaller teams that "evolve past the paradigm of violence being the default way in which the player interacts with the world", and that there are plenty of puzzle games, adventure games and the like in which there is no violence at all.

The Outer Worlds 2 Featuring More Action, More Weapons, and More Graphics!

The call to venture beyond the stars has returned, and this time, it’s bigger, bolder, and more unpredictable than ever. During The Game Awards 2024, we unveiled the first gameplay trailer for The Outer Worlds 2, promising a fresh adventure in a brand-new colony next year. No, really. The colony is completely new, and that’s a fact. Just, please—don’t break it. Yes, we’re looking at you, Hope-sun-launchers.
True to Obsidian Entertainment’s signature style, The Outer Worlds 2 lets you carve your path through Arcadia, a colony brimming with factions, intrigue, and chaos. This is the birthplace of skip-drive technology and the battleground where the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. As a daring, undeniably good-looking, and maybe-questionably-competent Earth Directorate agent, you’re tasked with uncovering the source of catastrophic rifts threatening everything. No pressure. How you handle these rifts? That’s entirely up to you—“Your worlds, your way,” after all.

Explore a New Frontier

• The Arcadia colony is engulfed in a factional war, as the Protectorate’s so-called benevolent rule is challenged by the rebellion of their religious order and a corporate invasion. As destructive rifts spread across the colony, each faction fights to control or close them for their own ends. Navigate diverse zones, uncover hidden lore, and shape the fate of a system on the brink!

Your Commander, Your Way
• Build your character with the abilities and choices that reflect your playstyle. The colony reacts to your every move, crafting a narrative that’s yours to own—whether you’re a disciple of diplomacy, an astute strategist, a crusader for chaos, or something different altogether. And yes, you can dumb!

Enlist Your Companions
• Recruit companions with unique traits, backgrounds and goals. Whether you choose to help them achieve their ambitions or steer them toward your own objectives, your influence shapes their growth (or death), making them an integral part of the immersive story you create together.

Wishlist the game today and stay tuned for more updates on The Outer Worlds 2—we can’t wait to share what’s next with you. The galaxy is yours to explore; the only question is, how will you shape it? The Outer Worlds 2 will be released in 2025.

Fallout co-creator Tim Cain shows off the remarkable The Outer Worlds demo that got the publisher thumbs up only a year into development

Tim Cain might be best known as a co-creator of the original Fallout, but some of his most recent work has come with Obsidian on its The Outer Worlds series. While he’s currently consulting on The Outer Worlds 2, Cain’s just shared a demo of the first game from just a year into its development, and it’s well worth checking out.

In the video on his YouTube channel featuring this vertical slice - which he’s shown off with permission from Obsidian itself - Cain explains that it’s a vertical slice. What is that? Well, basically a limited section of the game which has to “look and play like the final game” and is shown to the publisher, which in this case was Private Division.

If Fallout's co-creator was to work on the series again, there's one key question he'd want answered first

Original Fallout co-creator Tim Cain has discussed the idea of whether he'd be interested in potentially working on the series again, if he were asked to. The developer says his interest in any Fallout project he was pitched would mainly come down to one key element - "What's new about it?"

If you're not aware, Cain has a YouTube channel where he regularly tells development stories from his lengthy career in the games industry - such as recently revealing his role in the events that led to the cancellation of Fallout Van Buren, Interplay's original Fallout 3. He also sometimes responds to questions asked by fans, which is what he was doing this time.

In a video on his channel entitled 'Would I Work On Fallout Again?', Cain discussed exactly that, citing it as his channel's current "most frequently asked question". The answer, in case you're wondering, is a maybe, with a lot depending on the specifics of whatever pitch was made to him, specifically in terms of it offering the developer the chance to do something he hasn't already done in his career to this point.
