Monster Hunter movie director cuts racist joke, apologises

December 9, 2020 A brief dialogue scene with a racist joke will be removed from the Monster Hunter movie worldwide following backlash in China.

The Monster Hunter movie is receiving edits worldwide after a joke with racist overtones caused the film to be pulled from Chinese theatres. Director Paul W. S. Anderson has issued an apology, as has Asian-American actor Jin Au-Yeung, who performed the line in the film.

The scene will be removed from all versions of the film worldwide. "I am absolutely devastated that a line from our movie, Monster Hunter, has offended some audience members in China" Anderson says in a statement provided to Deadline. "I apologize for any anxiety or upset that this line and its interpretation caused. Monster Hunter was made as fun entertainment and I am mortified that anything within it has caused unintentional offense. We have respectfully removed the line from the movie. It was never our intention to send a message of discrimination or disrespect to anyone. To the contrary - at its heart our movie is about unity."

The controversy became apparent to English-speaking game fans thanks to a thread on Twitter, where Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad posted some footage of the dialogue for the movie, and ran-through why audience members are unhappy. In the scene, one character asks another "What kind of knees are these?" following up with "Chi-knees." The pair are American soldiers, as the protagonists are a team of military recruits that get transported to the world of the games. As Ahmad explains, this joke has racial connotations due to a playground chant used to disparage people of Asian heritage in English-speaking countries.

This Monster Hunter mod lets you fight Doom Eternal's Marauder alongside Isabelle from Animal Crossing

Here at PCGamesN, we're suckers for a good crossover - Thomas the Tank Engine and literally any videogame, for instance. But one modder has gone above and beyond to create what may be the mother of them all: a mod that lets you fight Doom Eternal's Marauder in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.

Doom Eternal x Monster Hunter World is the nightmare you've been waiting to face in Monster Hunter. The Marauder is perhaps Doom Eternal's most controversial addition to the FPS game's bestiary, a highly technical foe capable of reflecting your attacks and forcing the player to slow down and watch for specific tells before responding. To put this another way, the Marauder is a huge pain in the ass, and slapping him around with a Monster Hunter-sized greatsword seems like just what the doctor ordered.

Created by modders Lyra and Crimson, Doom Eternal x Monster Hunter World does not require ownership of Doom Eternal, but you will need Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. The Marauder model here is attached to the Leshen skeleton introduced in the Witcher 3 DLC last year.

Play as Milla Jovovich in the event quests coming to Monster Hunter World

In an odd turn of events, Monster Hunter World is crossing over with the upcoming Monster Hunter movie. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Capcom is releasing two limited-time event quests where you'll have the opportunity to play as Artemis (voiced by Milla Jovovich), the star of the Monster Hunter movie.

The event quests begin similarly to the plot of the movie - US army ranger Captain Artemis finds herself in the world of Monster Hunter after falling through a mysterious portal. Seriously. Though Artemis will be speaking English throughout these event quests, the NPCs in the world will speak in Monster Hunter language. If you've watched the Monster Hunter movie trailer, we imagine they're going for a similar vibe.

The first event quest pits Artemis against a Black Diablos in the Wildspire Waste. Taking down the Diablos rewards you with the materials needed to create the Artemis alpha armour set, the same set she wears in the movie. As for the second quest, Artemis has a much larger challenge on her hands: a giant Rathalos. Defeating this beast will reward you with the materials to craft the Artemis layered armour, also from the movie
