The Monster Hunter movie trailer shows off 5 familiar monsters

The Monster Hunter movie's first full trailer is out in the wild, following a very brief teaser earlier in the month. We get to see Milla Jovovich, Tony Jaa, and their soldier pals get into plenty of peril, but more importantly we get a good look at some of the lovely monsters that have been rudely interrupted by these gun-toting humans.  First, let's get up to speed. Captain Artemis (Jovovich) and her squad of soldiers find themselves transported to the world of Monster Hunter by a sandstorm—very Wizard of Oz—and quickly discover that their guns are no match for big ol' dragons. They've got to get help from Hunter (Jaa) and Admiral (Ron Perlman) to survive, and along the way there's a whole world-saving quest and presumably a few fights.  If you erase all the bits with soldiers and modern guns, it does look a great deal like Monster Hunter, with the creatures pretty faithfully recreated. There are a few more nods to the game, like the slinger getting Artemis out of danger, and we'll even see the Meowscular Chef, a palico from Monster Hunter World, though sadly he doesn't appear in the trailer.  Five of the series' monsters show up, though it's safe to assume we'll see a whole lot more. That $60 million must have gone somewhere. First off, we get another look at the diablos, which is surprisingly good at sneaking up on people given its size. It hangs out underneath the sand and then jumps out when it gets visitors. After the amount of times it killed me in Monster Hunter World, I've still got a grudge.  It's followed by some much nicer—but still pretty dangerous—apceros. They probably won't want to eat the soldier buds, but pretty much everything in Monster Hunter is dangerous, and those tails sure look like they'd pack a wallop. I'd still take them over the creepy nerscylla, the giant arachnids we see chasing Artemis and her gang. They're awful.  Along with the diablos, the trailer squeezes in an elder dragon, gore magala, and another huge wyvern: a fire-spewing rathalos. That's a lot of heavy-hitters for a two minute trailer, and probably a bit too much for a group of soldiers who've maybe never even played Monster Hunter to take on.  It was previously delayed until April 2021, but it's now set to appear on December 30 in the US and "soon" elsewhere.

Monster Hunter movie will have Palicoes and Meowscular Chef

During a panel at this year's New York Comic Con, Monster Hunter movie director Paul W. S. Anderson talked about all the monsters he crammed into the film. We already knew about the massive beasts, but Anderson confirmed some fan favourite critters are making an appearance too.

In the panel (ta, IGN), Anderson stated that Palicoes, small, feline companions from Monster Hunter: World, are a staple aspect of his production. "Well, you couldn't make a Monster Hunter movie without having a Palico in it," he said. "So definitely we lean into the Palico." In Monster Hunter: World, players only get one Palico during the entirety of the action-RPG game, so the bond becomes quite special. In context here, that means Tony Jaa, who's an established hunter in the film, should have a Palico pal by the time we meet him in the plot.

One famous Palico is Meowscular Chef, who retired from the hunting game in World to be a cook after assisting the Admiral, who'll be portrayed by Ron Perlman on the big screen, for years. According to Anderson, Meowscular and star Milla Jovovich develop a rapport, of sorts. "We have one of the characters, Meowscular Chef, who's the Admiral's sidekick, who's a fantastic character, who has this rather flirtatious relationship with Milla, which is really interesting," he stated.

Yes, you read that headline right, Monster Hunter movie. The film adaptation (using that term very loosely) of the action-RPG game series has its first trailer, and it's a doozy.

Keeping things short and sweet, the 17-second teaser focuses on Milla Jovovich's Capt. Natalie Artemis and Clifford Harris Jr.'s Link as they encounter one of the titular monsters for the first time. The behemoth in question looks like the massive, fearsome Diablos, and of course, the solution to this threat is to try pumping bullets into it from a turret and assault rifle. Meagan Good and Diego Boneta make brief appearances, too.

The most eye-catching part is the big "Only In Theaters" at the end. In July, the flick was delayed from September 2020 to April 2021, but this claims December. Who knows? Either feels wrecklessly optimistic at this point. But maybe another movie from Paul W. S. Anderson, the director behind most of the live-action Resident Evil films, is just what everyone needs. The plot involves the military squad we see here magically transported to the land of monsters and hunting, whereby they meet a group of actual hunters, featuring cinematic martial-arts legend Tony Jaa, of the Ong-Bak trilogy, and Ron Perlman. Jaa with the over-the-top action of the aforementioned Resi films makes this very alluring, to be honest.
