Total War: WARHAMMER II News

This spindly tree is the real hero of Total War: Warhammer 2

Not all heroes wear capes, and in the case of Total War: Warhammer II you can receive salvation from the unlikeliest of places. Picture this - you're leading an army of Vampire Count forces through the countryside. You're in force march mode, because you're going to be late for tea if you don't get there soon.

But crisis befalls you and you're ambushed by an army of dwarfs, whose range capabilities are formidable and likely to tear your army of overdressed skeletons to pieces. What are you to do? How are you going to survive and not be late, for a very important date? This was exactly the dilemma facing Reddit user Azenathor. It turns out they just needed to trust in nature. Specifically, a Spruce tree. We think it's a Spruce, anyway.

Expert analysis (read: we asked around the office) leads us to believe it's some kind of fantasy Spruce, or maybe a Pine, although it's burnt and lacking any foliage. It turns it's not needed though because not only is this perennial plant an absolute unit, it's capable of taking hits like Luke Skywalker in that scene from The Last Jedi.

This Total War: Warhammer 2 mod helps Karl Franz keep up with the new lords

There are now more than 60 playable legendary lords available in Total War: Warhammer 2's Mortal Empires campaign if you include the couple dozen that carried over from the first Total Warhammer. As new lords have been introduced, it's been hard not to feel that some of the original strategy game's crew have lost a bit of their lustre by comparison. Now there's a mod that spiffs good ol' Karl Franz up a bit so he can keep pace with his newer, flashier competition.

The Karl Franz Reboot mod by Steam user Vacuumrider reworks Franz's skill tree in several key areas. The mod doesn't alter his base stats, but instead tinkers with some of his abilities in order to make Franz a better late-game contender against the likes of Rakarth of Karand Kar and Throt the Unclean. Franz's legendary hammer, Ghal Maraz, gets an added +50% base weapon damage, for example, and his 'Hold the Line' ability is reorganised to unlock along with 'Leader of Men' at Rank 6. The leadership bonus granted by 'Leader of Men' expands from +50% to +100%.

The mod grants Franz some brand new abilities, like 'Hold the Line!', that allow him to keep his soldiers in the fight longer, but where you'll likely notice the biggest changes is to the bonuses he's able to give to his dedicated soldiers, particularly the Reiksguard.

Total War: Warhammer 2 patch returns Drycha's missing wolves

While Creative Assembly is calling it a "small interim patch" designed to address just "a handful of issues," Total War: Warhammer II's 1.11.1 patch does something rather important if you've been playing as the Wood Elf legendary lord Drycha. Specifically, it returns her unique Wargrove of Woe giant wolves units to her Wild Spirits pool.

For anyone playing Wood Elves in the strategy game, this will be a relief - Drycha begins with some giant wolves in her army, but now she'll be able to instantly recruit more from the pool of Wild Spirits units unique to the Wargrove of Woe faction. These also include cave bats, giant spiders, and the feral manticore (which implies the existence of a tame manticore, strangely enough), but the giant wolves are certainly a nice addition to the lineup: they're fast attackers who ignore all terrain-related penalties and have vanguard deployment capability. They're also forest stalkers, which means they gain melee defence and accuracy bonuses whenever they're fighting in the woods.

The patch also includes a few other fixes: Rakarth's Whip no longer "jumps back to its original location" when you click on him, Skaven victory conditions have been modified in light of the updates to how Skaven corruption works, Condemned Lizardmen will no longer gain Blood Voyage buffs, and you won't get any more increased supply lines from Lohkir's unique Black Ark.

Expanded Roster - Kislev Reborn is a mod by Dindi, Crisord and Decomposed which is described as an "ambitious project [that] aims to complete and expand the official Kislev lore", which includes "tons of content, including custom models, abilities, technologies, skills, and spells".

If you're a fan of the hugely popular SFO: Grimhammer II, someone's also made a sub-mod that makes Kislev Reborn compatible. Kislev Reborn introduces two generic Lords, five generic Heroes, as well as 30+ units and eight Regiments of Renown to the game, all available to be recruited when you play as Kislev.
