Total War: Warhammer 2's free beastmen update patch notes have arrived

As you may have herd by now, Total War: Warhammer 2's final DLC pack, The Silence and the Fury, comes out tomorrow. Alongside that comes a big free update for the fantasy strategy game, and developer Creative Assembly has helpfully published the patch notes so we can have a look at what will be changing.


You won't need to own the new DLC for this patch to have a significant impact, although some of the biggest changes are coming to the beastmen faction. That means you will need to own the original Total War: Warhammer and its Call of the Beastmen expansion for any of the beastmen rework changes to apply to your game, unless you pick up the new expansion.


If you do, you're in for some fun. The beastmen "have undergone some ferocious faction furtling," Creative Assembly says, in order to dig into their Warhammer lore and make their campaigns more entertaining. Beastmen commanders will now earn dread for completing missions, burning down towns, and winning battles, and dread can then be used in the Rewards of Dread panel that, among other goodies, offers various legendary lords.

Total War: Warhammer 2's new Beastmen campaign mechanics have been revealed

It's the opinion of this news writer that the Beastmen in Total War: Warhammer have always been good, despite what everyone says - and granted, that's primarily down to their having a unit called the 'gorebull.' However, developer Creative Assembly seems to agree with the broader Total Warhammer community that the cow-bois have been languishing without attention, and have made them the focal point of the final bit of DLC before the launch of Total War: Warhammer III in the fall.


Creative Assembly has now provided a bit of a deep dive into the changes coming to the Beastmen in The Silence and The Fury, and it's an extensive list. The faction is getting a total overhaul, with brand new campaign and recruitment mechanics that will guide your play as a Beastmen commander.


It may come as a bit of a shock to learn that the biggest change will be the addition of unit caps to Beastmen armies. As with regiments of renown, you'll only be able to field a certain number of each type of Beastmen unit at a time. That sounds a bit limiting, but additional new mechanics help balance it out.
