Total War: WARHAMMER II News

The best Total War games

Shogun: Total War released in June 2000, which means the venerable strategy series has been going for almost 20 years now. That's longer than iPhones, broadband, and most memes. There have been 13 games in that time - not counting mobile spin-offs or the shuttered and underrated Total War: Arena - with another (Troy) due this year. It's quite a lot to keep track of.

Enter: us. If you've ever been curious about this stalwart of PC gaming, look no further. We've put together a list of the best and most essential Total War games, from Shogun to Three Kingdoms via the fantastical foray that is Warhammer.

It is, of course, impossible to crown one single Total War game the 'best', because - especially since Warhammer - they do so many different things, with their various settings affecting the feel of their campaigns and tactical battles. So instead, we'll walk you through what each of our picks does well and differently from the other games in the series, and why they may be regarded as 'essential' - beloved by fans and yet to be truly imitated by any other game in the series, or even in all of gaming.

Total War: Warhammer 2's next DLC is a Wood Elves-focused Lord Pack

Creative Assembly has provided some new details about the next DLC coming to Total War: Warhammer II. It's a Lord Pack, and will feature the Wood Elves faction - but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The latest devblog also details a new content scheme that will change the amount of new free stuff you get from here on out depending on how much Total War: Warhammer stuff you already own.

First, though, the Lord Pack. Creative Assembly says the next DLC will indeed be a Lord Pack and it will 'focus' on the Wood Elves, who you'll remember from the Realm of the Wood Elves DLC expansion for the original Total War: Warhammer. Previous such packs have featured opposing Lords from two different races, but it's not yet clear from which race the second lord will come. The pack's accompanying update will feature a third legendary lord, and they'll be free as before, but accessing them works slightly differently now.

If you only own the Total War: Warhammer II base game, the arrival of the new Lord Pack will mean you're getting a new free hero, plus the game update with various and sundry bug fixes and rebalancing changes. That's it - it's still free, but base game owners are no longer getting a free legendary lord when updates roll out.

The Best Total War: Warhammer 2 DLC

Total War Warhammer II is a bit of an oddity as far as Creative Assembly games are concerned, lacking the flood of DLCs that usually accompany every Total War title. Two years since launch, the game has only received a couple of large expansion, and a couple of Lord Packs. It took over a year for it to finally cross the threshold for us to make one of our DLC guides. As it is, there's probably only a few Lords Packs left for Warhammer 2 before Creative Assembly shift focus on to Warhammer III, which has been in pre-production since 2018 but not formally announced yet.

What is the Best Total War: Warhammer 2 DLC?
    Rise of the Tomb Kings
    The Queen & The Crone
    The Shadow & the Blade
    The Warden & The Paunch
    The Prophet & The Warlock
    The Hunter & The Beast
    Curse of the Vampire Coast

Regardless of how much there is, here's everything you need to know about Total War: Warhammer II's DLC & expansions.

Total War: WARHAMMER II - Rise of the Tomb Kings

Warhammer II's first DLC is also its best, bringing the undead rulers or Nehekarah to virtual life for the first time in history. Rise of the Tomb Kings is a massive expansion, adding the Land of the Dead in all its sandy and pyramid-y glory and tasking players to find five of the Nine Books of Nagash to gain complete control over the eternal unlife of its eponymous rulers.
