Total War: WARHAMMER II News

No new Total Warhammer 2 DLC news expected "for a couple of months"

Total War: Warhammer III is coming, but its predecessor Warhammer II still has one last arrow in its quiver before it walks off into the sunset, its work finally done. During the big hubbub around the third game's announcement, a bunch of news came out of the official FAQ Creative Assembly always releases whenever it reveals, well, anything.

This document mainly focused on Warhammer III, but it had a few things to say about Warhammer II as well. One was that the popular Total War game would be coming to the Epic Games Store, but another was that there would be one final piece of DLC released for the game before it gets consumed by its younger sibling.

Now, Warhammer II recently received a free piece of DLC as part of the Rakarth update, but we're led to believe the final expansion mentioned in the FAQ will be a premium expansion, probably a final 'Lords' pack. Everyone (no one) hopes it will be Beastmen themed. Whatever it's going to be, we won't find out for a couple of months at least.

Forget Warhammer 3 - it's time for Total War: Lord of the Rings

When it comes to large-scale melee battles, there are no strategy games that come close to Total War. Combining tech that can render thousands of units in real time with over two decades of experience in the strategy genre, Creative Assembly's flagship series has covered historic periods ranging from Ancient Rome, Shogunate Japan, and the Napoleonic Wars, even branching out into fantasy in its recent collaboration with Games Workshop.

Sure, Total Warhammer 3 is coming and it looks great, but there's another fantasy franchise that seems tailor-made for Total War in concept and spirit: J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Its epic tale of companionship, loyalty, and the brave struggle of good versus evil was captured brilliantly in Peter Jackson's early 2000's movie trilogy, spawning several game adaptations, mostly in the action-adventure genre. Strategy gamers were only blessed with a couple of offerings: 2003's forgettable War of the Ring and 2004's Battle for Middle-Earth, a competent large-scale RTS that spawned a sequel two years later. None of those games are currently available on digital storefronts, but that shouldn't matter. After nearly 20 years, it's time for SEGA and Creative Assembly to get their hands on those Weta Workshop 3D models, and create the ultimate Lord of the Rings game.

Dig deep into Dwarves with this Total War: Warhammer 2 mod

After their prominent role in Total War: Warhammer, the dwarves have had to step back from the real limelight in Total War: Warhammer 2. That's not to say they haven't seen their share of new legendary lords, but other races have gotten more attention in the fantasy strategy game's second outing. Not to worry, though: a new mod adds in a bunch of new mechanics to make dwarves more interesting to play in Warhammer 2.

The Hammer of Grungni adds in new unique mechanics for each of the dwarf legendary lords playable in Total War: Warhammer 2, making all them tougher against their mortal enemies the Greenskins. It also adds a new building chain that allows for the recruitment of elite Stonemasons - powerful units that draw power from the guild buildings you've constructed across your domain.

Using the mod, each Dwarf hold allows for the construction of a unique Stonemasons chapter, beginning as a Masonry Enclave, and upgradeable first to a Guild Hall and then to a Stonemason Chapter. These buildings increase public order but reduce growth, with the Stonemason Chapter adding a different bonus depending on the hold it's built in.

These Total Warhammer 2 mods spice up Rakarth and the Dark Elves

Last week saw the release of a new Dark Elf legendary lord, as well as a free update for Total War: Warhammer II that gave the Dark Elves some love. Rakarth joined the faction's roster as a bad-ass beastmaster, but there's plenty more to the Druchii and the Total Warhammer 2 mod community has stepped in to offer something extra.

Looking at Rakarth himself, there are already some minor mods to tweak a few things. Maybe you want that helmet he had from earlier versions of Warhammer Fantasy lore? Or maybe you want a slightly different colour for his units? There are mods for that.

Or maybe you want to look at the Dark Elf faction as a whole, bringing further improvements and making them feel a bit more unique vs their high and mighty cousins? The 'Dark Phoenix - Druchii Immersion Mod' is a great place to start. It focuses on Malekith and the Dark Elves in the Mortal Empires campaign and is steeped in Warhammer lore. The mod introduces new quest objectives around leading Malekith on his journey to become the Phoenix King by introducing 40 new quest techs.
