Beta 14.5.6 - Controller and Localization Fixes (and map update!)

Today's update includes some more fixes to issues related to controller, keyboard, and localization. I also have some map update progress to share too!
  • Fixed a bug that caused sliders to not function using a controller
  • Fixed a collision bug on Orc Island
  • Fixed a bug that could freeze the game after rebinding controller buttons
  • Fixed a bug that caused some buttons to not properly get remapped
  • Updated the button icon system to correctly display PS4 buttons
  • Added the button mapping text to the localization system
  • Added the "Monsters Left: " text to the localization system
  • Fixed a bug with the localization for obsidian
  • Fixed a bug with the localization for trying to place an Archer Tower notification
  • Fixed a bug that caused some Orcs "Quest" button to not localize.
  • Fixed a bug that caused empty character equip slots to display the pop-up UI
  • Fixed a bug with key mapping for Quickslot 2 and for Jump actions

I've also made some great progress on the new map system, but I've also added more features to it so it is taking a bit longer than expected.



In the above gif you can see the mouse-over text working as well as new markers appearing when I have quests. The character marker matching your character's facing is also in.

I have to hook up a few more things for the map, including the remaining quests and a system to add a marker for a quest and then make it permanent - for example, when you first get the quest to meet Grrrumble you'll get a quest marker for his location. But after that, a permanent marker is placed at his location since you've met him. There are a few other instances like this, such as Shaydee's Shop and the Magic Pool.

I also need to add controller support for the markers (so you can see their pop-up text) which will be a bit tricky, but should fit within the existing controller system. The sorting of things that you mouse over also needs some more work - you can see this is in the gif when I mouse over the town marker, the player marker gets hidden behind it. So, still some work to do, but I'm really happy with it and I think it'll make a good addition to the game once it's done!

Beta 14.5.2 - Controller Fixes and More

Tonight's build includes some controller fixes as well as some other updates. I'm still working on the map and hope to have it ready for a build this weekend!
  • Fixed some bugs that could cause the controller to become non-responsive. This was especially true with UI and when in build mode. This fix unfortunately required me to wipe any controller re-mapping so you will have to change them again if you mapped the buttons. Keyboard maps should not be affected.
  • Removed all of the rocks that were spawning inside trees.
  • Fixed some localization bugs related to the Orc Quest.
  • Fixed some localization bugs related to the armor displays.

I also got back all of the art assets needed for the a big part of the story. Can't wait to start building with them! Once I am far enough along I might put the location on a test area that you can check out. It might be a bit of a spoiler, so no pressure to do so if you'd rather not!

Beta 14.5 - Fixes and Improvements

Tonight's build includes a bunch of fixes including a fix for the issue where some rocks can't be hit and better controller support for some of the UI.
  • Fixed a bug that caused some rocks to ignore being hit with a pickaxe. All rocks should be mineable now.
  • Keyboard actions are not localized.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the NPCs in the Choose Dwarf UI to break. There is now a 48 house limit for towns, which is way more than most would ever place.
  • B Button can now be used to close the Build Menu.
  • Fixed a bunch of localization issues included the mine text, and townsfolk mood pop-ups.
  • Fixed a couple of quest bugs that caused the wrong text to appear.
  • Added controller support for reading the note in the Strange Activity quest.
  • Orc Quest NPCs have English dialogue options in Japanese
  • Hooked up the Orc dialogue to the localization system.
  • Added Sandstone and Desert Wood to the localization system.
  • Fixed a ruin in the cherry tree area that was floating off the ground a bit.
  • Fixed the texture for the small stone wall.
  • UI inputs for controllers now use the new input system. This will allow me to make those inputs customizable in the future.
  • The actions in the key bind UI list are now localized.
  • Refactored the Tinker UI to work better with a controller.

The artist finished the map and the markers for it, so I'll be working on that next!

Beta 14.4 - Strange Activity Fixes and New Map Sneak Peek

Tonight's build includes some fixes for the Strange Activity Quest. Also, a sneak peek at the new in-game map!
  • Fixed a localization bug that caused the second part of the quest to display the wrong quest.
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused the third quest to select the wrong destination for the goblins.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the search mechanic to sometimes fail when searching a house.

As you can see, the new map has more markers on it. Most of these will be dynamic, meaning they will only appear once you've discovered them (such as Shaydee's Shop or Grrrumble's cave) while others will appear when you get a quest, such as the monster camps, orc boat, caves, and dungeons. Note, some of the more static images are in the wrong place, we just made this quick to show all of the new art.

Most quests that take place outside of your town will have some kind of marker. I'm also going to add mouse-over pop-ups for the various markers.

I'll be working on the actual system the rest of this week and hope to have it ready for a weekend update!

Beta 14.3.1 - Optimizations

Tonight's build is a quick update to add more optimizations for some of the buildings.
  • Tavern - initial optimization
  • Wooden Houses - additional optimizations
  • Stone Houses - additional optimizations

The Wooden and Stone Houses are pretty much complete as far as optimizations. The Tavern had never been optimized yet and considering it's the largest building in the game, it was long overdue. There are a couple of more things I want to do with it to optimize it further as well.

I also started work on the map features and hope to have the map art completed and approved this week. If all goes well it should be done in time for a weekend build.
