Beta 5.6 - Remove Buildings, Monster AI, and More

Tonight's build includes an update to monster combat AI, the remove building feature, and some fixes.
  • Monsters will now attack a bit more frequently and more regularly. Prior to this change the time between attacks varied too wildly.
  • You can delete a placed building by holding down right-control and pressing the right mouse button. The following rules apply.
    • The building must be completely built.
    • You must have at least one other building of the same type.
    • The building cannot have a townsperson assigned to it.
    • Farms and Herbalists cannot be removed. This is temporary as they change the terrain and I want to make sure that changing it back works before adding them to the remove list.
    • You cannot remove sewers.
    • Orc buildings cannot be removed.
    • Removing a building gives you back 1/2 of the resources used to create it. Note for Quality Wood and Quality Stone you cannot go over the maximum amount that your Storehouses can hold.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the build menu to get corrupted if you canceled the build of an Orc building.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the torches for Orc Huts to look really strange.
  • Fixed the terrain for the Orc and the Haunted Islands. They lost their textures when I updated to the latest version of the engine.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Beauty related structures such as town trees and lamp posts to fail to update the overlay UI when placed.

This update also includes a *ton* of localization updates. All of the static UI is now set up for translations. There's a lot, so if you see any text that looks out of place please let me know. The static UI is done, now I'll be working on all of the places where text is created in the actual code.

In Development: Removing Buildings

I have a very early system for deleting buildings in development and wanted to see what you all think of the current implementation. I've been reluctant to do this as removing a building can affect the quest system in adverse ways, but that's mostly related to when the building has a townsperson assigned to it. Plus it comes up a lot, so I figured it was time I gave it some more serious thought!

The system would allow you to delete a building if:
  1. the building is not a house, storehouse, or a sewer
  2. you have more than one of that building
  3. you have not assigned an NPC to that building
This would allow you to delete a building if you accidentally place a second building that you don't need or want. But once you assign a townsperson to that building, you can't delete it.

You would also get back 1/2 of the resources you spent to place it (including the gold), with Quality Wood and Quality Stone being capped at whatever your maximum storage is.

The system would also allow you to remove non-buildings such as walls, towers, decorative trees, lampposts, etc, with the one exception being the sewers. If you have multiple sewers, any one of them can be quest locations, so removing those will require some extra checks to make sure you don't have a quest that uses the sewers. I'd likely do that after releasing the main system.

I haven't built the refund part of the system yet and I am sure there are some special cases I'll need to add as I test it. So I wanted to get your feedback on the idea before I pressed forward with it.

Beta 5.5 - Keybind Fixes and Localization

Tonight's build includes a fix for the power attack and kick keybinds.

This update also has a bunch of updates to various UI to add localization support to them. Again, until we actually translate the game you shouldn't notice any difference. I'm still adding the system to the UI and then will add it to text that is generated by the code, such as the quest text.

I also made an update to multi-line text to better handle font sizes with translated text.

The UI updated in this build includes:
  • All of the attack and combat UI tutorial screens.
  • Inventory
  • Skills
  • Treasure
  • Shaydee's Shop (selling)
  • Imbuing
  • Equipped Items

Beta 5.4 - Auto-Sprint and Engine Update

This is a small update that includes an auto-sprint button. The default is set to L, but you can change it in the options. The reason for the small build today is because I updated to the most recent release of HammerHelm's engine, Unity. I've tested the game for a while and feel like it's in good shape, but engine updates can sometimes cause unforeseen issues, so I wanted to release something with a minor change just in case.

Beta 5.3 - Happy Holidays

Beta 5.3 turns on the holiday content:



  • Storehouses have blinking star shaped lights.
  • A holiday tree is craftable at the Carpenter.
  • The Dwarves are all wearing Santa hats!

This update also includes the core system for localization. Note, there is still a lot for me to do before we can start translating HammerHelm into other languages, but the core system was a big step in that direction. Mostly you shouldn't notice any difference as all of the English text is the same, it's just being pulled from a source that now can be translated.

Also, a new title screen courtesy of the Soedesco Art Design Team!



Now that I have developer access to everything again we'll be getting back to our usual update pace. I'll likely spend a lot of time the next week or two updating the entire game for translation, but as always, I'll try to add some new stuff at the same time too.
