Halo plus portals FPS Splitgate delays launch after surprisingly popular beta


Free-to-play FPS Splitgate was planning to move from beta to full launch tomorrow but there's been a bit of a snag. It turns out that "Halo plus portals" was too popular a concept, raking in 2 million downloads during its open beta. So many people jumped in to take a turn with cross-platform team portal shooting that 1047 Games say they're delaying full launch of the game until next month while they work to scale up their available servers for all those players.

The Splitgate crossplay beta is so popular the developers had to take it offline




The free-to-play "Portal meets Halo" FPS Splitgate has been around on PC for a couple of years now, during which time it's struggled to maintain a player base. According to Steam Charts, a reasonably strong launch in May 2019 quickly tailed off to an average monthly concurrent player count of just over 100. Things started to pick up a bit in late 2020, but over the past week the player count has exploded, to the point that it can be very difficult to matchmake into a game...

Looks like Splitgate will be the next 'big thing' FPS supported on Linux

Splitgate released official native Linux support recently when the open Beta went live, and it seems to be hitting it big pulling in plenty of regular players.
