Outriders review - riders on the storm

It's really, really hard to figure out what Outriders is in its first few hours. A slow, lost world-style opening introduces you to the planet Enoch, humanity's second chance after environmental collapse claims Earth, but after a devastating natural disaster you find yourself flung forward in time, imbued with superpowers, and plunged into a brutal civil war.

Yep, humanity flew itself halfway across the universe to start from scratch and managed to devolve into a Mad Max-like dystopia in less than a century. While the last remaining enclaves of humanity duke it out for resources, it's up to you and an expanding camp of allies to trek across Enoch and uncover the cause of the natural disaster that sent the colonisation effort spiralling out of control in the first place.

I wasn't expecting the main story to keep my attention for very long, but Outriders had me hooked for the duration of its 15-hour campaign. Your group's search for answers across the war-torn surface of Enoch is packed with misery and suffering, both within your roaming camp and in the places you visit. Moments of levity keep it all from becoming overbearingly gloomy, and the humour is generally very well measured, rarely straying into edgelord territory.

Nvidia users can pause Outriders, because online-only single-player is dumb

You don't need me to remind you that online-only single-player is dumb and such restrictions are completely arbitrary, but Outriders has gone and provided an incredible reminder of just that thing. Normally, you can't pause Outriders when you're playing solo, because hey, it's an online game, right? But if you're on PC and have an Nvidia GPU, you can put the action on hold whenever you need to.

All Nvidia users have to do is hit Alt-F2 while playing to activate Ansel, as Reddit user Aced-Bread has discovered (via PC Gamer). Ansel is essentially Nvidia's cross-game photo mode, and just like any good photo mode, it freezes the action to let you fly the camera around and take pictures. In other words, it pauses the game.

You can't just use this to annoy teammates when you're playing online, either. You can still activate Ansel while you're in a co-op session, but the action will continue as normal while it's active. You know, because it's a multiplayer session, where you shouldn't be able to pause, as opposed to a single-player mission, where you should.

Outriders and It Takes Two are Steam's top sellers

All good things must come to an end, and so it is that Valheim's streak as Steam's top seller is done, dethroned by Outriders. It Takes Two, and The Binding of Isaac, round out the top three, the Viking game coming in at fourth.

Despite some ongoing server issues, Outriders has shot straight to top of Steam's chart this week, having re-entered the top ten last week ahead of its full launch. It Takes Two, the co-op game about working through a divorce, is in second, having become a bit of a sudden hit, and The Binding of Isaac: Repentance is at third, the final expansion in The Binding of Isaac series of roguelike games.

Horizon Zero Dawn makes another appearance, the open-world game arriving for sixth, and Evil Genuis 2 releases to seventh place. Crowns, the in-game currency for mounts, pets, and more in The Elder Scrolls Online, managed to slide into eighth, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is down one spot from last week, to ninth. Cyberpunk 2077 manages to hang in there, tenth once again.
