Outriders servers "are continuing to improve"

Unfortunately, Outriders has not had the smoothest launch, suffering server issues as soon as the full version became available. Developer People Can Fly has been hard at work resolving the problems, and says the situation is gradually improving.

The official Twitter account has been tweeting routine updates on servers and other issues. At the end of Saturday, April 3, the studio commented that things are getting better, and the devs are working flat out to make the action-adventure game playable for everyone. "Our servers are continuing to improve as the team is working hard to stabilise them in the longterm," reads the message.

Outriders has attracted a high player count, and a number of other bugs and glitches have emerged over the last couple of days. The team is referring people to a Reddit post that serves as a master list of known issues, and fixes and workarounds. One quest, 'A Bad Day', was causing stuttering and crashing that's since been fixed. In a follow-up tweet, the studio says it plans to "share more specific details" in a post-mortem about what's actually happening to the servers, and what the solutions were.

Outriders devs are "unfortunately fully aware of server breakdown"

Outriders has launched to a healthy player count - or, perhaps, an extremely unhealthy player count, judging by the state of the servers today. Access was spotty at the game's launch yesterday, but now things are appearing to get worse. The devs are working on it, but there's no ETA on a final solution just yet.

The official outriders Twitter account has been providing updates on efforts to improve connectivity for most of the day, which included "the mother of all turn-it-off-and-on-agains", bringing the servers down entirely for a short period. The most recent word as of this story is that "while we don't yet have a guaranteed fix or an ETA we are working on getting you back online ASAP".

"We are, unfortunately, fully aware of servers breakdown you are experiencing right now," studio head Sebastian Wojciechowski adds in a message on developer People Can Fly's account. "Our partners at Square Enix are trying to fix it ASAP." Wojciechowski adds that "we really hope that you will judge the game rather than those teething troubles related to server issues. It is frustrating for you and it is frustrating for us."

Outriders has an update out that should fix DX11 stuttering

If you're having trouble playing the brand-spanking-new action-adventure Outriders, you may be in luck: after a high volume of reports on launch day about stuttering and crashing, developer People Can Fly says it has pushed out a configuration update on Steam that should correct those issues if you're playing with DirectX 11.

"This is specifically for anyone still encountering stuttering or stability issues," People Can Fly writes on the Outriders Steam forum. "We have just pushed a config update to Steam that will endure that DX11 now launches as intended (yesterday's launcher was not launching DX11 properly)."

When you launch Outriders from Steam, you'll initially be given a choice between running the game in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, the latter enabling advanced graphics features such as DLSS, while the former is often more suitable for older video hardware. Evidently, the launcher wasn't selecting DX11 correctly, and players have found that the DLSS option appears to be available when they've run Outriders after selecting the DX11 option - when it shouldn't be available at all.

Despite server issues, Outriders is Square Enix's biggest Steam launch ever

Outriders is here, and it's a hit. After positive buzz from the game's extensive demo People Can Fly's loot shooter has hit the ground running, rocketing into Steam's top ten on launch day. While Outriders is running through the same launch issues that seem to plague all online multiplayer games on day one, it still looks to be publisher Square Enix's biggest Steam launch ever.

Outriders reached a peak concurrent player count of 111,953 just a couple of hours after launch, as SteamDB shows. Despite the full retail price tag, that's double the player count that the free demo brought in - that number peaked at 55,351 on February 25. It remains to be seen how much players will want to stick with Outriders in the long term (that's always the catch for any loot game), but the day one prospects are good.

Less good is the current user review rating for Outriders, which is currently sitting at 'mixed'. Naturally, a handful of hours really isn't enough for any deep critiques, and early complaints are focused largely on server issues, which have been preventing players from logging on and sporadically kicking them from games once they've gotten in. It's no surprise for an online game to have trouble at launch, but it's always disappointing.
