Half-Life remake dev finally has a new game, with a beta on the way

Black Mesa, the Half-Life remake originally launched all the way back in 2012, is so good it almost - just almost - supersedes Valve's original. Modernizing the epochal, Gordon Freeman-starring FPS, if for some reason you've found the very first Half-Life difficult to enjoy, or if you're searching for the ideal companion piece, Black Mesa is a surprisingly deep and ambitious overhaul, built on the Source engine that powers Half-Life 2. Officially sanctioned by Valve, Black Mesa put Crowbar Collective firmly on the map. Now, the developer is finally returning with a brand-new game, which you will be able to play before launch thanks to an upcoming beta.

Data strings in the latest Counter-Strike 2 update hint at two new Valve games, and one of them might just be Half-Life related

Half-Life fan's favourite pastime (aside from actually playing Half-Life games) is latching onto the tiniest hope that a new Half-Life might be just around the corner. I say this as one such eternally optimistic Half-Life fan. Which is why I started vibrating with excitement at a single data string hidden in the latest Counter-Strike 2 update...

New Half-Life games found hidden in Counter-Strike 2 update

I think Half-Life 3, at this point, can be officially classed as a cryptid, you know, like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. We have rumors, anecdotal evidence, and occasional alleged sightings, but the Valve FPS sequel is otherwise a total mystery, the missing link between Half-Life 2 and Portal 2, roaming deep in the forest somewhere. On the contrary, two other new Half-Life games are becoming more and more believable. You may have heard rumblings of something called Neon Prime, or Citadel, or Half-Life X. The latest Counter-Strike 2 update offers new evidence as to their existence - if you're eager for the return of Gordon Freeman, G-Man, and the world of Black Mesa, Valve may well have something on the stove.

Half-Life remake Black Mesa is being remade, new demo out now

I think we're reaching some kind of wonderful Half-Life nexus point here, our very own resonance cascade whereby all the versions, variations, and different visions of Valve's epochal FPS finally combine into one glorious, green-glowing singularity. First there is Half-Life. Then there is the Half-Life remake, Black Mesa, which incorporates visuals, physics, and other elements of Half-Life 2. And now there is another, new Half-Life remake, which remakes Black Mesa using the GoldSrc engine of the 1998 original. The Half-Life remake is being remade...in Half-Life. We're past the event horizon here, folks. Like a delicious, warm microwave casserole, if you want to sample the new Half-Life remake, a fresh demo is available right now.

Enormous Half-Life mod is basically an entirely new game

There will, one day, be a full, official, and new mainline Half-Life game. If we can get Half-Life Alyx, and the big 25th anniversary rework of the original, then surely, eventually, we can get Half-Life 3. In the meantime, however, trust modders to keep the Gordon Freeman and Black Mesa fires burning. As Valve's classic FPS turns a quarter of a century old (I just grew a hundred more gray hairs typing that), a gigantic new mod transforms Half-Life into basically an entirely new game. It looks like Half-Life. It feels like Half-Life. But with new levels, characters, weapons, and enemies, this is truly something else.
