Adventurer Season 5
  • The Adventurer Pass spans over the 10-week season and is a way for players to earn exclusive in-game rewards. By playing the game and ranking up the seasonal Adventurer Tiers, players will unlock various epic rewards including:
    • E-points: The S5 Adventurer Pass rewards includes a total of 1500 E-points! Players can spend 950 E-points to unlock the Adventurer Pass and earn 1500 E-points back when they hit tier 97!
    • Adventurer Characters (does not affect game balance)
      • There will be three Adventurer Characters in this season. All characters have a variety of unlockable styles, and will gradually unlock as the player's Tier increases their Adventurer Pass
        • Edmund (Base Character Preview)
        • Friday (Base Character Preview)
        • Alice (preview to be revealed)
      • Player portraits
      • Glider(Europa) appearances
      • BMX bike appearances
      • Grappling hook appearances
      • Lobby music
      • Loading screens
      • and more!
  • The Adventurer Pass is separated into two parts:
    • The Free Pass - all players can obtain rewards by increasing their Adventurer Tiers without any sort of payment
    • The Adventurer Pass, which is available for 950 E-Points. E-Points are a premium in-game currency obtained with real-world money via Steam payment (1000 E-Points is equivalent to $9.99 USD)
  • Players will immediately get a handful of rewards upon purchasing the Adventurer Pass, including two base Adventurer Characters: Edmund and Friday! Players will also get access to exclusive Adventurer weekly challenges
  • Players can buy the Adventurer Pass at any time during the season and retroactively earn the premium rewards based on the season tier that they have already reached!
  • Players can level up their seasonal character levels by accumulating experience points in-game; each character level will reward a certain amount of Adventurer Badge(s). Completing daily and weekly challenges will also reward Adventurer Badges accordingly, 10 Adventurer Badges will increase players’ Adventurer Tier by one, unlocking a variety of rewards
  • As always, none of the rewards in the Adventurer Pass affects game balance, and all unlocked rewards stay forever!
  • Weekly Challenge Missions will provide a large amount of Adventurer Badges and character experience points to help players increase their character levels and Adventurer Tiers. Season 5 will provide 10 sets of Weekly challenge missions. The first eight weeks' challenge missions will provide a large quantity of Adventurer Badges and the final two weeks' challenge missions will provide a large amount of character experience points. As the season progresses, one set of weekly challenge missions will be unlocked every week, and the already unlocked missions can be completed at any time throughout the season

Battlecars
  • How it works
    • New item- Vehicle Modification Kit
      • Found as a consumable loot item in Normal mode and Training mode (it cannot be found in Ashen Eye), one Vehicle Modification Kit is guaranteed to be found in airdrops
      • Players can use one Vehicle Modification Kit when they’re next to an upgradeable vehicle and press “G” to start upgrading the vehicle to a Battlecar
      • Vehicle Modification Kits can also be used to repair Battlecars (restores HP and damaged components) by standing next to the Battlecar and pressing “G”
      • Battlecar components can break off after taking a certain amount of damage and lose the Battlecar ability, repairing Battlecars will restore the components to its original state
  • There are currently a total of 6 upgradeable vehicles in game, each with a unique Battlecar device (ability)
    • Armored Truck- Machinegun Turret (new vehicle)
      • Firing keybind- LMB
      • The machinegun turret has no ammunition restrictions. However, firing will increase the heat meter. At full heat, the turret overheats and becomes unable to fire until it completely cools down
      • Players can hold the RMB to enter the "aiming" state, which increases firing accuracy
    • All-terrain Vehicle- Rocket Booster (new vehicle)
      • Boost activation keybind- Shift
      • The rocket boost works similarly to the underwater DPV’s boost. The Battlecar will quickly accelerate while boosting, the energy reserve will be consumed, and will then slowly recover over time while not boosting
    • SUV- Pulverizer
      • Device automatically runs, no keybind needed
      • The pulverizer will deal a great amount of damage continuously in front of the vehicle, damaging anything in range. However, it will not directly damage Adventurers inside of vehicles, and will damage the vehicle first
    • Mini SUV- Recon Radar
      • Activation keybind- Shift
      • During radar activation, enemy characters, enemy-occupied vehicles, and unoccupied vehicles within the radius will be marked on the map. They will be marked as a periodic display, each display lasts for a short period of time
      • If players are detected, a full-screen effect and UI prompts will be played to remind the players that they have been detected by the recon radar
    • Pickup Truck- Explosive Barrel Launcher
      • Barrel Launch keybind- LMB
      • Device has no ammunition restrictions. However, every launch will increase the heat meter. At full heat, the device overheats and becomes unable to launch again until it completely cools down
      • Barrels explode immediately upon contact with vehicles. Barrels will not explode immediately upon contact with objects and players
      • Barrel explosions can be triggered by gunfire, grenades, RPG-7, other barrel explosions/contacts, etc.
    • Mini-compact car- Cloaking Device
      • Activation keybind- Shift
      • When cloaking, the car will become more transparent, but sounds and special effects will still play normally
      • Players can deactivate by pressing shift again to enter the device cooldown early
      • Cloaking will be interrupted by the following actions:
        • Shooting, ADSing, getting in and out of the car
        • Driver switches seats
        • Taking any type of damage
  • Battlecars- friendly fire damage
    • The following damage types cannot cause friendly fire damage to teammates and players themselves:
    • Weapon damage
    • Grenades
    • RPG-7
    • Explosive barrels
    • Pulverizer

New landmarks on Europa Island
  • The secret construction of Europa Spaceport is now complete, replacing the Windsor Village
  • The Hospital at the west side of Fisherman Town is now fully operational and open for visits by Adventurers in need
  • It seems like a mysterious person arrived in Artaud City, and has built a new magnificent manor, he must be very well-off financially!
  • A new bar has opened in Artaud City as well. Feel free to stop by and take a load off in between eliminating one another

Gameplay
  • Players can now finish challenges in Training Mode, including Daily Tasks, Adventurer Pass Weekly Challenges, Pinnacle Challenges, Battle Buddy Missions, Seasonal Quests, and Heroic Challenges
  • As a legendary pirate aspiring for new adventures, Captain Fokke has left Europa Island with his Pirate Ship and Underwater Treasures
  • Updated the airdrop’s appearance to a giant Battlecar tire to fit the theme of Season 5
  • Removed collision models for certain narrow trees

New weapon- the RPG-7
  • The RPG-7 can be found in Normal mode and Training mode (it cannot be found in Ashen Eye), and each airdrop is guaranteed to contain the RPG-7 and ammunitions
  • The RPG-7 fires dedicated RPG ammunition, each reload can only load one rocket
  • The rocket will immediately explode upon contact and deal a certain amount of AOE damage, the damage drops off for targets far from the center of the explosion
  • When the RPG-7 hits a vehicle and the passengers are not in the area of effect, it will only damage the vehicle. A direct hit on a passenger in a vehicle will cause damage to both the passenger and the vehicle

Developer Insights - August 2019 (Season 5 first reveal)

Hello Adventurers,

It's been quite a while since our last Developer Face-to-face post. During this time, we built and released Season 4 with a variety of new characters and new mechanics, introduced a new game mode- 'Ashen Eye,' and most importantly, kicked off our first ever 'Amazon Cup,' an online competition held in collaboration with Amazon open to all players. Meanwhile, the team has been hard at work behind the scenes to create new content for the upcoming Season 5. With this issue of Developer Insights, we want to reveal some details about our short-term development plan, upcoming Season 5 content, and some online/offline community events that are currently in the works behind the scenes. Let's jump in.

PART I. Recent improvements

We've worked hard on Season 3 and 4 and have brought in many new features and unique gameplay experiences to Ring of Elysium. However, we understand more than ever that if we don't pay attention to our community's voices, our vision and hard work will be for nothing. Building a better ROE together with our player base has always been one of our core philosophies in Aurora Studio.

While we've always encouraged feedback across all of our social channels, we recently created the S4 Feedback Collection Megathread on Reddit. The goal of this megathread was to gather all of our players' up-to-date feedback to one place so that we can best understand the priorities of our community. As you may have noticed, we've already started to make some adjustments based on the feedback provided from the megathread, here's to name a few:

Audio improvements
  • The importance of sound cannot be stressed enough in a battle royale. We believe that more accurate in-game sound effects can greatly enhance your gaming experience, and many community members agree.
  • We're happy to announce that we've recently improved our "3D audio spatialization" option to now include indoor reverb and sound propagation effects.
  • With 3D audio enabled, players can now experience spatial audio comparable to what would be heard in reality. This feature is currently available for footstep and gunshot sound effects.
  • We also noticed there's some existing issues/bugs with the latest 3D audio option's performance, the Aurora Studio Audio team will be continuously working on fixing those issues and improving the overall sound quality of the game, we'll keep y'all updated!
Quality-of-Life changes
  • One excellent example of this is the "window opacity" change we made a couple of days ago.
  • We found out about this issue by watching our community member- BryaaNz's feedback video on YouTube, he commented that the glass in the buildings around Europa Island was a bit too hard to see through if you're standing outside. We agree that the glass offered a bit of an advantage to players inside of structures looking through it, so we went ahead and made some adjustments to the glass transparency.
  • After we put the patch out, we were surprised to see the number of positive comments for this tiny change, we realized that this type of "minor" improvements can make a huge difference when it comes to gameplay, small detail polishments like this really adds up. Therefore, similar QOL improvements are expected to come in the future.
DX12 Client Beta
  • Improving DX12 and making it available to as many members of our community as possible continues to be a core focus for us.
  • To help our client team figure out how to improve the DX12 Client, please participate in this survey below, you can even win 1000 E-Points if you get lucky!
  • One point of consistent feedback that we're getting is that players on Windows 7 would also like to have access to DX12, too. This is something that we're working on currently. As soon as we have more info, we'll be sure to let everyone know.

Our short-term development to-do list (based on the feedback collection megathread)

Over 400 players provided their thoughtful and creative suggestions on the megathread, we're truly overwhelmed by your enthusiasm and support. Over the past few weeks, the team went through and read every single suggestion that was provided by our community meticulously, we now have a good understanding on the community's urgencies, and even found some incredibly unique, creative ideas.

Since we have to also work on developing the Season 5 content at the same time, which occupies a huge amount of workload for our devs, we will not be able to implement all of the ideas posted by the community at once, some will come before others. Easier-to-implement features/adjustments will come before ones that take some more time, such as the Death Cam system, which was the #1 requested feature from our player base. Below are a few of the changes that we're planning on making in the near future. After we're finished with the list below, we'll provide more details on the changes that are harder to implement, stay tuned.
  • Audio
    • Continuous improvements to the 3D Audio Spatialization option
  • Challenges
    • More variety, less "same challenge type with different numbers required."
  • Pirate ship and underwater chests seem out of place
    • Will be removed in S5 as they are inconsistent with current season themes
  • Buffing the glider
    • The glider will have better and more realistic interaction with objects around the map
      • Break through windows while gliding
    • Inventory management while gliding
    • Ability to draw and fire SMGs sooner while gliding
  • Quick-mark system
    • Adding individual keybind slots for the 4 commands
    • Pings can be colored based on teammates' colors
  • QOL
    • Display healing item UI (similar to what we see in spectator mode)
    • Make a difference between teammates and enemies more noticeable when aiming down sights (dynamic UI transparency)
    • Teammates' death icon will disappear faster
    • Teammates will be spawned next to their team if they do not choose their own spawn point
    • UI improvements when discarding items (buttons and slider adjustments)
    • Provide option to select loading screens and lobby music randomly
    • Speed up the character landing recover animation
    • Short-distance falling will no longer interrupt healing
    • Optimize the issue of "getting stuck by tiny objects around the map and have to jump through them."
  • Gunplay/weapon balance
    • Shotguns buffs (such as R870 and Origin-12)
      • Improve reliability/consistency
    • DMRs buffs
    • SRs buffs
      • Base damage increase
      • TAC-50 will be added to the airdrops
    • Higher-resolution scope textures
  • BMX/character movement improvements
    • Optimizing the issue of "getting stuck by tiny objects."
  • Spectating
    • Allow spectating in Squad mode after the entire squad is eliminated

PART II. Adventurer Season 5 first-reveal

Innovation is our goal. Our target is to make a more complex and multidimensional battleground, and create more possibilities for strategies. For the upcoming season, we're literally going to be reinventing the "wheels" for the battle royale genre- the central theme of Season 5 will be "Battlecars," a vehicle modification system to allow players to upgrade vehicles into not only a transportation tool, but a vehicular war machine.

We have also made some terrain/building changes that impacts gameplay on the Europa Island map. Let's check them out below!

Adventurer Characters

Like previous seasons, there will be three brand-new characters released in Season 5. The Season 4 Pinnacle Challenge has already begun, and the ultimate reward is a FREE Season 5 Adventurers Pass! Make sure you take advantage of these challenges to set yourself up for success at the start of Season 5.

Battlecars (Modified Vehicles)

Despite being highlighted in our previous Face-to-face and S4 promotion videos, Modified Vehicles have still not yet been released, that is because we wanted to put out a fully-fleshed-out system instead of rushing it. We believe that this feature will significantly change the meta, and wanted to make careful adjustments on the vehicles modifications so that they wouldn't break the balance of the game. We now see the adjustments are in a good place and are ready to be released! There will be 6 modifiable cars in total. Each modification has been designed for different situations our players may face in each game. Things are gearing up in Season 5, and we can't wait to see how our community takes these new additions and incorporate them into their gameplay.

Bring 'em back to life!

The tiniest mistake can often cost you, and your teammate's life in a game round, and you often end up sitting on the “bench”, watching your friends having fun while waiting for the next game. We want to make gameplay a little more forgiving while still staying true to our fast-paced gameplay. We'd like to introduce respawn points, a system where alive players can use to revive their eliminated teammates. There will be a couple of respawn points scattered across the map, but it wouldn't be easy to revive your fallen friends. Respawn device locations will be fixed on the map, and each point can be only used once per match. If you want to save your buddies, you're going to have to fight your way through the enemy to be the first one there.

RPG INCOMING!!!

No, we are not talking about Role-Playing Games, we're talking about the portable, anti-tank, rocket-propelled grenade launcher that makes your target and everything around it blow up! As we mentioned above, we want to avoid making Battlecars too overpowered, and one good countermeasure for vehicles would be the RPG. We will be releasing this weapon alongside vehicle modifications in Season 5, so fire up that engine and dust off your explosive handbooks, it's gonna be a wild ride.

New landmarks & building types on Europa Island

Thanks to all of the tourists coming to Europa island recently, businesses and residents have flourished! Hospitals, bars, aircraft bases, and mansions will be popping up around Europa Island. The residential areas have also been renovated with walls being redone and new furniture being added to residents' homes. But... please do try to respect the new properties by not painting the wall with bullet holes, okay?

III. Online/offline events

We’re going to Gamescom!

We're excited to announce that Ring of Elysium will be having its exclusive booth at Gamescom Cologne 2019 this August 20-24, more info on that will be released soon, stay tuned!

(concept design, does not represent actual quality of booth on site)

Amazon Cup

The Amazon Cup regional championship is also firing up on August 10&11 for EU and NA! The finals will be held with the participation of Shroud and Forsen being each respective region's "final boss." Make sure you tune in on the official broadcast to see who will be crowned champions!

Audio
  • Made several improvements to the 3D audio spatialization option
  • More details about this change from the ROE Audio Team:
    • After hundreds of hours of testing, we finally enabled the [indoor reverb] and [sound propagation] effects in the 3D audio feature. After turning on 3D audio, you can now get a spatial audio effect that is much more realistic. This feature currently only works with footsteps and gunfire sounds from third party characters (i.e. everyone except yourself).
    • When a player is in a nearby building, the reverberation of the building's sound will reveal that he is inside the building. And if the player was in the same building as you, by [early reflections and reverb], you'd know he was in the same space as you. You can even distinguish whether he's upstairs or downstairs. We also optimized the parameters of [sound obstruction] that when the enemy is obstructed indoors by obstacles, the proportion of the direct sound decreases, and more reflection sounds. These optimizations combined can help you better listen to the sound and identify your enemy's position.
    • We've been adjusting to find the balance between 3D audio's on and off status. If you turn off 3D audio, you'll hear the most direct directional sounds. But when 3D audio is turned on, you can clearly perceive whether the enemy is inside of a building or not. Therefore, we highly recommend that you turn on 3D audio so that you can have a clearer indoor/outdoor audio feedback when fighting around buildings. Finally, the audio team sound engineers will continue to work on expanding the spatial audio features to help you have better audio feedback and a more strategic combat experience.
  • Friendly tip: don't forget to turn on the option to experience the improvements!

Gameplay / graphics
  • Adjusted the opacity for windows, increasing the visual transparency

Network synchronization and spectating improvements
  • Improved the synchronization accuracy for vehicles. Now vehicles can be seen more accurately from the player's point of view or from the spectator's point of view
  • Improved the spectating accuracy for ADSing and shooting
  • Spectating now shows the spectated target's hitmarks and scope reticles
  • Spectating now shows the muzzle fire, smoke grenade throwing effects, and firing effects for bullets
  • Optimized the jittering issue when a third-party player jumps and turns
  • Fixed an animation error when a third-party player is landing from falls
  • Fixed an issue where third-party players' reloading animation didn't play in some cases

Store- Adventurer Tier Boosts
  • We have brought the Adventurer Tier Boosts back to the Store in our latest update!
  • There are three levels of Adventurer Tier instant boosts (+1, +10 and +20 tiers)
  • A few tips:
    • Players can purchase adventurer tiers at the Store or through the "Buy Tiers" button under the Adventurer Pass interface
    • The +10 and +20 tier options both have discounts compared to purchasing just 1 adventurer tier, the discount is 20% off for +10 tiers, and 30% off for +20 tiers!
    • There is no account limit for purchasing adventurer tiers. Newly registered players are able purchase tiers immediately, go straight to tier 100 and unlock all rewards!
    • Upon successful purchasing, your adventurer tier will be increased immediately.
