Crafting system in the game requires you to burn things from time to time :) Hight temperatures will allow you to make either the materials and something to eat as well.

The Desert... Once your vehicle is constructed you will be able to ride it through the desert. The path isn't going to be easy though, but the loot you'll find there will be well worth the risk!
