Developers' Diaries #4

This summer we have released the Strategic Mind Franchise Soundtrack that will contain all the music for the Strategic Mind series (with the exception of the majority of The Pacific tracks), and all the money we gain from selling it is going into the creation of new tracks.
Why no The Pacific tracks?
The issue with music in Strategic Mind: The Pacific is that we bought music with a 1 commercial product license, and it’s not unique. It may be great music and fit the game, but other projects can use it as well, and we can only use it in one product. There are only 4 tracks written by an individual composer that are available in the Strategic Mind Franchise Soundtrack.
Why create our own music?
After we realized the issue above, we found a group of composers united under the name of Daraba Studio, who are now in charge of composing and recording all the music for our projects. Starting from Blitzkrieg we own all commercial rights and therefore can release all tracks in a separate soundtrack etc. Additionally, we are always hard-pressed on budget, so creating a separate soundtrack is a great way to add more tracks into the game than originally planned. Finally, we have read a number of users’ requests for a soundtrack, and that is what finally tipped the balance in favor of this new approach.
How is our progress so far?
The community is quite supportive of the Soundtrack idea, and we thank you for that. So far, we have gathered enough funds from Soundtrack sales to order additional 3 tracks that will be added to the existing soundtrack along with all the Strategic Mind: Spectre of Communism tracks that we created using our default budget. All community-funded tracks will have a [Community supported] tag in their name, so you could tell which tracks were added owing to your support.
What are our future plans?
We hope that more players will buy the soundtrack during the Strategic Mind: Spectre of Communism release, and it will help us create more Community supported tracks for the next project. If the soundtrack sales would exceed our expectations, we could create some additional tracks for Spectre of Communism and add them to the project when they are ready with one of the updates.
Adding historical tracks
In Strategic Mind: Blitzkrieg we started experimenting with historical music. The problem with it is that there is no copyright on the old music composition (it expired), but there is copyright for the old music performance(recording). That means we have to record our own version of the old songs and music. We do not have the budget for the chorus, so we create only instrumentals. In Blitzkrieg we added 2 tracks to see how they fit the game:

Wenn die Soldaten:
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
White Army, Balck Baron (aka “The Red Army is the Strongest”):
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
We were satisfied with the result, so we decided to continue adding some percentage of the tracks of old times in the next titles.
Historical tracks in Strategic Mind: Spectre of Communism
Here is the Soviet Air Force March:
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
We also plan to add “The Internationale” and “Korobeiniki”. Additionally, one of the three community-supported tracks will be “Oh Fields, My Fields”.
Cinematic tracks
We also create special cinematic tracks, that are usually up to 1 minute long and are used only in cinematics. Here are some new cinematic tracks from Strategic Mind: Spectre of Communism.

Zhukov theme:
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Battle theme:
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Gameplay tracks
Gameplay tracks are played at random during the actual gameplay. We will use the tracks from Blitzkrieg and the new tracks. Additionally, this time we want to try and use some of the historic tracks in the gameplay tracks capacity and are eager to hear your feedback.
Soundtrack update
We will update the Strategic Mind Franchise Soundtrack on the Spectre of Communism release date so that all current and future owners will get access to new tracks as well.
Your feedback and support
Your feedback is very important to us. It is actually you who suggested creating a soundtrack as a separate entity, we just built on that idea. Your thoughts about music quality and its nature are invaluable to us, so make sure you do share your thoughts on our community hubs and in the comments below. Also, every soundtrack purchase makes us one step closer to adding yet another track into the series. So, we greatly appreciate your support.

We will post the next issue of the Developers’ Diaries as soon as we can, so stay tuned.

New units in Strategic Mind: Spectre of Communism | Part 5
IS-3
We have already talked about IS-2 (The IS acronym is the anglicized initialism of Joseph Stalin (Ио́сиф Ста́лин, Iosif Stalin) before. Now we will proceed to its successors. It had certain engineering novelties, such as the cone-shaped frontal part of the hull. The idea was to improve defense, but in fact, it made a production process more complicated and the effectiveness was questionable. So, in the next IS-4 model that change was reverted. Overall, IS-3 had more armor than its predecessor, making it one of the heaviest tanks of the time.
IS-4
IS-4 had even more armor than IS-4. However, it turned out that additional planting had little effect: the guns that could not harm IS-3, still could not do it, but the guns that were able to penetrate IS-3 armor, could penetrate the reinforced planting of IS-4 as well. Combined with the growing power of top anti-tank guns, it was unrealistic to create an impenetrable tank in 1945. The reputation of KV tanks in 1941 as being nearly impossible to kill, was largely due to the fact that the German army lacked powerful anti-tank guns at the time.

The main armament of the IS-2, IS-3, and IS-4 tanks was a solid 122-mm gun D-25T.

We will keep posting new units that will appear for the first time in the Strategic Mind series, so stay tuned!

Historical personalities in Spectre of Communism | Part 5

Life has improved, and now as never before the doors to a happy and cultured life for all the peoples of our Union stand wide open. (c) Vyacheslav Molotov (1930 speech)

Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov (real family name Skryabin) was a Soviet politician and diplomat, an Old Bolshevik, and a leading figure in the Soviet government from the 1920s, when he rose to power as a protégé of Joseph Stalin. Molotov served as Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars from 1930 to 1941, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1939 to 1949 and from 1953 to 1956. Skryabin took the pseudonym "Molotov", derived from the Russian word molot (sledgehammer) since he believed that the name had an "industrial" and "proletarian" ring to it.

The trouble with free elections is that you never know how they are going to turn out.
(c) Vyacheslav Molotov (1954)

Molotov was the principal Soviet signatory of the German-Soviet non-aggression pact of 1939 (also known as the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact). He was also known for following a very aggressive and uncompromising politics, although it is hard to tell to which degree it was his own incentive and to which he followed Stalin’s vision. In 1939 he replaced Litvinov, who had a somewhat softer approach to foreign politics. "Molotov was always resentful of Litvinov's fluency in French, German and English, as he was distrustful of Litvinov's easy manner with foreigners. Never having lived abroad, Molotov always suspected that there was something impure and sinful in Litvinov's broad-mindedness and appreciation of Western civilization.”

Ours is a righteous cause. The enemy shall be defeated. Victory will be ours. (c) Vyacheslav Molotov (Radio address to the Soviet People on June 22, 1941)

After the German attack on the Soviet Union on 22 June Molotov addressed the People of the Soviet Unit in a famous radio broadcast. This attack and the following disaster for the Red Army had left USSR no choice but to join forces with the Allies. Nonetheless, the Soviets remained very cautious and reserved in their relations with the Western powers, as they were considered ideological enemies, despite the temporary alliance. Up to WW2, the Soviet Union’s ultimate goal declared on numerous occasions was establishing World Communism. It is only after the war that they had to renounce such views and publicly declare, that they are content with building a happy and prosperous Communist country within its current borders.

There is no alternative to class struggle. (c) Vyacheslav Molotov
