Finnish Language Day! Suomi localization for SM: Spirit of Liberty 🇫🇮

Hello, guys! Last month we announced that we started working on a game about Finland in the WW2 - Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty. We are extremely excited by how warmly this idea was received both by our players' community and by the Finnish people on Reddit. Those were not only words of encouragement but real actions.

A group of players from Finland has reached out to us and offered help with the Suomi localization. We happily agreed to their help. Now Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty already has its Steam store page in Suomi:

Finnish Language Day seems to be the best moment to announce that the full game, which is estimated to have around 100 000 words by the way, will feature full Suomi text localization.

We think it is great that the Finish people will have an option to play a historical game about their country's recent history in the native language. We hope that the number of games on Steam with Suomi localization will continue to grow.

Support for the project by adding it to your wishlist and we will let you know when the free Demo will become available later this year: 👇

Historical Personalities in Fight for Freedom #3: Field Marshal Harold Alexander

Field Marshal, though General for most of WWII, Harold Alexander was no typical military man. Far from his generally gruff colleagues, Alexander had an artistic strea, being a lifelong painter, and was known for his likeable, if not necessarily agreeable personality. General Patton once said ”an army is a team” - Alexander fit the role of the fair and personable team captain.

In France, North Africa, Burma and eventually Italy, Alexander led the Allied forces through personal charm, persuasion and mediation - an approach that sometimes bordered on manipulation. Some would say it was warranted, however, in an army full of talented but headstrong types.

Known for Alexander's impeccable manners and modesty, he had established good relations with the key decision makers, like Sir Winston Churchill and Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower. The praise and the criticism usually centered on the same trait, simply observing it from a different angle. While some admired his laissez-faire approach, others faulted him for insufficient oversight; some admired Harold's honesty and modesty, others claimed it was a deliberately cultivated image. Some even framed his usual calm under pressure as complete detachment from combat. Field Marshals Montgomery and Brooke claimed he was “intellectually unimpressive”, though some suspect it was another display of modesty - after all, Alexander definitely had a keen mind for interpersonal relations.

The facts, however, spoke for themselves - Harold Alexander was an incredibly experienced war leader, who fought with equal efficiency in the mountains, deserts, jungles or plains. And in 1945, it was him who accepted the first major surrender of the German forces - a one million-strong group of armies in Italy.

Weekly Intelligence Report #24: Studio news, Korean localization, and more

General! Our ever-vigilant intelligence service has prepared a news update, for your eyes only! Here are all of our spy’s key findings.
Starni Games insides
This week the strict transport lockdown was once again imposed in Kyiv, so we had to switch to the remote work for the time being. No worries though, as exactly the same thing happened last year and the last 6 weeks + release of the Strategic Mind: Blitzkrieg were done working remote. Afterwards, we moved back into office, but we are confident that moving to the remote would not slow down the development significantly. A more significant issue was that many of our employees got ill lately (Negative for Covid-19 though), but now almost everyone has recovered, so we are back up to full speed. The team is very passionate about the project, so even if anyone on the team takes a sick leave, he/she would usually work as much as their current health condition allows. It is in no way required or expected of anyone, but rather done on a voluntary basis, as no one wants to let down the team.
Fight for Freedom gets a Korean localization
Huge thanks to piliaboar11 and asura-223 who have volunteered to work on Korean localization. Right now, the localization is already in the works and should be ready for the release. Additionally, the work on Korean localization for the Spectre of Communism is now finished, so all finishing touches will be delivered with the April update this month.

Units in Fight for Freedom #15: Centurion - the British main battle tank

The venerable Centurion embodied wartime research and development. It was built specifically to counter the then-strongest tank military on the planet, and was perfectly equipped for the task - only for the war to suddenly end. It stayed in service for decades, and spent years without a worthy foe.

While being a heavy tank, with 150 mm turret armor, Centurion was conceived as the last of the Cruiser tanks. The goal was to maintain the series’ reliability, mobility and ease of maintenance, but improve its survivability and equip it with 17-pounder tank-killer cannons. The result was a resounding success - while less well-protected than the Churchill, it was the first truly “universal tank”, and paved the way for the MBTs of the Cold War and beyond.

Sadly, Centurion’s field trials came in April 1945, when the Victory in Europe was only a matter of time. Created to counter Panthers and Tigers, it ended up facing neither. However, in the alternative-history portion of Strategic Mind: Fight for Freedom, things can play out very differently.

This unit will become available in 1946 in the US campaign as one of the late-war British units available for the acquisition and deployment in the alternate history portion of the US campaign. Naturally, it will have the Heavy armor trait and remarkable combat parameters. It is one of the instruments available to Allied forces in 1946 to counter the heavy Soviet tanks.

Weekly Feature #4: Close Combat & Close Quarters

[previewyoutube]
[/previewyoutube]
Hello guys! Today, we will explain how the Close Combat & Close Quarters mechanics work in the Strategic Mind series and what is the difference between the two. Getting your tank units devasted by the enemy forces? Confused as to when your troops can move into the hex they attacked? Watch the video and get all the answers you need.
About the Weekly feature series
The Strategic Mind series has a quite sophisticated set of core mechanics, some of which are a novelty for the genre, for example, the supply system. The upside is that the game has lots to explore even for seasoned wargame veterans and offers everyone a new experience. The downside is that oftentimes the players lack the time to master all the core mechanics, especially after a hard working week, when you want to spend more time with your family during the weekend.

We have decided to start a new series of short tutorial videos called Weekly feature. In this series, we will have a closer look at one core mechanic at a time. We hope that it will help the new players to grasp the game faster, and the veteran players to learn a couple of new tricks. For example, we will explain in more detail the Surrender mechanic or the damage calculation rules. It should be especially helpful to the players who are new to the wargame genre.
