Brawls Update

The purpose of remaking the known Brawl mode is to give players the opportunity to participate in it at any time during their Stormbound progression. This creative game mode should appeal to both advanced players and people just starting their adventure with Stormbound.

Up until now, the Brawl mode has very much been intended as end-game content for players with very advanced collections. Others had nothing to look for in this mode because the advantage of one over the other excluded the possibility of any fair competition.

THREE DIFFICULTIES

From now on, there will be 3 running Brawl events per week, of three different difficulties: Casual, Warrior and Ultimate. The current Brawl version would sit somewhere between Warrior and Ultimate.

Additionally, every match will have a Fortress Level cap, a card level cap, and a limited number of turns, which can therefore result in a draw. This is intended to make matches more fair by eliminating a lot of the differences in base health and cards between players.

The crossed diamonds in the joint screenshot are further explained in the Crowns & milestones section.

Casual
The Casual Brawl unlocks at Fortress Level 11. In this Brawl event, the Fortress Level is limited to 12, the cards’ level is fixed to level 1, and matches last up to 10 turns per player.

Warrior
The Warrior Brawl unlocks at Fortress Level 12. In this Brawl event, the Fortress Level is limited to 14, the cards’ level is capped to 3 and matches last up to 15 turns per player.

Ultimate
The Ultimate Brawl unlocks at Fortress Level 14. In this Brawl event, the Fortress Level and cards are not capped, and matches last up to 20 turns per player.

CROWNS & MILESTONES

Victories will still yield 5 crowns and losses will still yield 1 crown. However, due to the fact that matches are limited in length, draws can happen and will reward 2 crowns to each player. A draw occurs when both players have the same amount of health by the end of the last turn.

To avoid making the Brawl too easy for lower tiers and difficulty levels, every milestone needs to be reached without losing more than 2 times. After 3 losses across a given milestone, the crowns will be reset to the previously reached milestone. For instance, if losing 3 times between 50 crowns and 70 crowns, the crowns will be reset to 50 crowns.

We are be keeping a very close eye on this system as the goal is not to make Brawl frustrating. Additionally, we are looking for ways to make losses redeemable in the near future so it’s a little more fluctuating than just 3 losses per milestone.

FAQ

What will happen to the current Brawl?

The current unique Brawl will no longer exist. It will always be 3 Brawl events per week, one for each difficulty.

How long will each Brawl last?

The Brawl events will still last from Thursday to Sunday—nothing changes in that regard. That being said, we are considering changing this in future patches.

What will happen to the Brawl leaderboard?

Each Brawl event will have its own weekly leaderboard, but besides that, it will stay the same.

Will there ever be new modifiers?

Yes, we are working on bringing new modifiers to the Brawl to keep it fresh.

BALANCE CHANGES

This release, like any other, brings some balance changes.
  • Unstable Build now inflicts 3 self-damage per turn (up from 2).
  • Venomfall Spire’s strength is now 4/5/5/7/8 (up from 3/4/4/6/7).
  • Joust Champions’s mana cost is now 7 (down from 8).
  • Trekking Aldermen’s strength is now 3/4/5/6/7 (up from 3/4/4/5/6).
  • Counselor Ahmi’s ability is updated as follows: If played with no surrounding enemies, return the copy of this card to your hand with +1 strength. The copy gains 1 strength every time it comes back in hand. If it does not, the additional strength is lost and the copy has the original strength. The base strength is now 1/2/3/4/5 (down from 2/3/4/5/6) and the ability is made surrounding.

NERF COMPENSATION

As usual, some compensation in the form of coins and fusion stones will be provided to owners of Unstable Build, proportional to the level and rarity of the card. Find below the compensation values for each rarity and level.

Common card: 0/0, 10/0, 20/1, 50/2, 120/5
Rare card: 0/0, 15/2, 30/3, 90/7, 190/10
Epic card: 0/0, 15/2, 40/5, 120/10, 250/20
Legendary card: 0/1, 20/5, 50/10, 150/20, 300/50

NEW CARDS

Two new cards are joining the neutral faction, one rare construct and one common ancient, introducing a bit of a movement twist!

ETERNAL ETHEREALS:
Mana: 8
Str: 5/6/7/9/11
Mov: 3

HEADLESS HOTHEADS:
On play, move fixedly forward
Mana: 5
Str: 3/4/5/6/7
Mov: 2

As usual, there will be exclusive packs to quickly get access to some copies of the new cards. For Headless Hotheads it will be between June 4th and June 11th and for Eternal Ethereals from June 18th to June 25th.

They will each cost $9.99, and will grant the following:
  • 10 copies of Eternal Ethereals, 5 fusion stones and 750 coins.
  • 5 copies of Headless Hotheads, 5 fusion stones and 750 coins.
VICTORY COINS UPDATE

Victory coins will be increased across the board in ranked matches, proportionally to the league of the player.
  • In Starter, Iron, Bronze, Silver and Gold leagues, a victory will yield 10 coins + an additional 10 coins for watching an ad or for having the Premium Pass.
  • In Platinum league, a victory will yield 15 coins + an additional 15 coins for watching an ad or for having the Premium Pass.
  • In Diamond league, a victory will yield 20 coins + an additional 20 coins for watching an ad or for having the Premium Pass.
  • In Heroes league, a victory will yield 25 coins + an additional 25 coins for watching an ad or for having the Premium Pass.

Additionally, it is worth noting that:
  • Victories while playing on Steam will yield the base amount per league only since ads cannot be watched on this platform - unless there is an active Premium Pass, in which case it's doubled, just like when watching an ad.
  • Victories while playing Brawl will yield 10 coins + an additional 10 coins for watching an ad or for having the Premium Pass, regardless of the league of the player.

To balance out the significant increase in victory coins in higher leagues, the monthly chest rewards have been reduced as follow:
  • The Heroes chest now contains 2,000 coins (down from 3000) and 70 rubies (down from 100).
  • The Diamond chest now contains 1,500 coins (down from 1800). Rubies untouched.
  • The chest for all the other leagues remains untouched.

PREMIUM PASS ADDITIONAL BENEFIT

Players with PREMIUM PASS will now have instant access to all custom rules and setting in the friends challenge setup

HEROES LEAGUE IMPROVEMENTS

We have issued quite some Heroes League improvements in April already and are monitoring their impact before pushing up new changes.

That being said, we heard the community’s concerns about the fact that lost matches feel too critical in the Heroes League because they take away too many Hero Crowns.

To make the Hero Crowns fluctuation smaller and solve that problem, we are setting up a maximum penalty of -10 Hero Crowns for a loss, and a minimum gain of 5 Hero Crowns for a win.

NEW PREMIUM PASS

May will be the month where the Premium Pass finally get redesigned and boosted. Its cost is increased to $7.99, but its rewards are now numerous:
  • No more ads for the month.
  • The coin cap is raised to 700 coins for the month.
  • The friend limit is raised to 200 (up from 100) for the month*.
  • Six extra deck slots for the month. Any extra deck after the month is over cannot be played, only stored or removed.
  • 10% discount on any Brawl matches. The Brawl calculator has been updated to reflect this option.
  • Increased daily check-in calendar rewards for the month, as always.

This is the total value for the calendar, free and premium respectively (including free rewards within the premium one):
  • Total free rewards: 450 coins, 40 rubies, 7 fusion stones, 4 common cards, 1 rare card, 1 epic card and 1 Heroic book
  • Total Premium (including free) rewards: 1,800 coins, 160 rubies, 28 fusion stones, 4 common cards, 5 rare cards, 2 epic cards, 1 legendary card, 1 Heroic book and 1 Mythic book
EXTRA DECK SLOTS

On top of the 6 deck slots that can be unlocked via the Premium Pass, 3 extra deck slots can be bought by all players via some in-game resources (in any order).
  • First deck slot you can permanently purchase will cost 50 rubies
  • Second deck slot you can permanently purchase will cost 150 rubies
  • Third deck slot you can permanently purchase will cost 250 rubies

BALANCE CHANGES

This release, like any other, brings some balance changes.

- Collector Mirz no longer has movement (down from 1).
- Excited Mousers now cost 3 mana (down from 5) and have 3/4/5/6/7 strength (down from 5/6/7/9/11).
- Ubass the Hunter’s ability now only considers each unique surrounding primary unit types. For instance, Faithless Prophets would be considered Ravens only in such case, not Elders. Prime Oracle Bragda is treated as an Elder only, not a Hero.

NERF COMPENSATION

As usual, some compensation in the form of coins and fusion stones will be provided to owners of these nerfed cards, proportional to the level and rarity of the card. Find below the compensation values for each rarity and level. (coins/stones)

Common card: 0/0, 10/0, 20/1, 50/2, 120/5
Rare card: 0/0, 15/2, 30/3, 90/7, 190/10

NEW CARD

Yet another temple will make its entrance in April, the Temple of Life, a new rare structure from Winterpact.

Temple of Life:

At the start of your turn, vitalize {amount} surrounding friendly units

Mana: 3
Str: 3/4/5/6/7
Ability: 2/3/4/5/6

As usual, there will be an exclusive pack to quickly get access to some copies of the new card between April 9th and April 16th.

It will cost $9.99, and will grant the following: 5 copies of Temple of Life, 5 fusion stones and 750 coins.

HEROES LEAGUE IMPROVEMENTS

It was to be expected that the new Heroes League would not be the perfect system from the get go. We are committed to make it better, and are ready to bring first improvements.

The main pain-points we collected were the following:

1. There are not enough players to play with in the Heroes League, particularly at the start of a new season.
2. The matchmaking often felt unfair and uneven.
3. The Hero Crowns gains and losses after a battle often felt too high.

As a result, here are the changes we are about to implement to hopefully make things better:

1. Because players currently in Heroes League will be downranked to Diamond instead of Platinum, we expect the Heroes League to fill up quicker than in its first month, hopefully minimizing the empty queues’ issue.

2. We are revisiting the way matchmaking works in order to make battles more balanced. The Hero Crowns will be used to match players in Heroes League, and players’ league and cards level within their played deck will be taken into account in any other league.
As a result, we hope to build a system where gold farmers are more likely to be matched with other gold farmers instead of people who are trying to climb. Additionally, the difference in Hero Crowns in Heroes League matches should be lower.

3. When a Heroes League player gets matched with a Diamond player, the Diamond’s player amount of Hero Crowns is assumed to be 1000. This should decrease the Hero Crowns losses/gains in such matches.

We hope these improvements are enough to make the Heroes League more enjoyable to everyone. In any case, we are going to analyze data and listen to your feedback within the next few weeks to see how it feels. We have a few other improvement ideas if needed.

EXCLUSIVE OFFERS

As usual, exclusive packs will be available from April 1st until April 5th:

Ament pack ($9.99): 3 Mythic Tomes, 2 Heroic Tomes, 1 Classic Tome and coin 500 coins

Helpful Bunny pack ($19.99): 20 rare cards, 15 epic cards and 10 legendary cards

Easter Edrik pack ($49.99): 650 rubies and 6,500 coins

NEW LOGIN SYSTEM

This has been a loooong time coming, but we are finally about to have a new login system. It’s not quite done yet, but we are hoping to see it live some time during the month of April.

The new system will let people sign in with their Google account or Apple ID. It will be possible to merge your Kongregate account to your new account (and vice verse). As a result, new players will no longer have to create a Kongregate account.

OPEN BETA TEST

We are currently considering beta-testers who will be thanked with in-game rewards at the end of the program. If you would like to volunteer, please send a message in #login-testing on Discord. Kindly mention the device you use, the country you live in and your player ID. We can only onboard a few people, so we won’t take everyone.

QOL IMPROVEMENTS

This release will also bring quite some quality of life improvements. In no particular order, I feel like it is worth mentioning:

- There will be a way to sort the friends list.
- Tapping a player’s ID will copy it to the clipboard.
- The Token Ancients image and 3D model will be renewed.

NEW AVATARS

There will be new avatars featuring Laurus, King in Exile, Doctor Mia and Siren of the Seas, costing 1,000 coins a piece. Three more avatars featuring lovely flowers for 200 rubies each.

FAQ

When is the update going to be released?

The exclusive packs will be available between April 1st and April 5th. The Temple of Life pack will be available for a week starting April 9th.

Will there be a daily check-in calendar in April?

Yes! The daily check-in calendar will be extended in April, just like it did in March. Still $4.99 to boost to Premium.

Five new books will make their entrance in the next update: the former Dragon and Feline tomes (revisited and renamed to Books), but also an Archragon Book, an Elder Book and a Pirate Book. They all contain 3 cards and cost 60 rubies, except the Archragon one which costs 120 rubies.

Elder Book: 3 cards, with rarity distribution of 0/60/35/5.

Pirate Book: 3 cards, with rarity distribution of 55/25/15/5.
Dragon Book: 3 cards, with rarity distribution of 20/60/20/0.
Archdragon Book: 3 cards, with rarity distribution of 0/0/70/30.

HEROES LEAGUE

March will introduce a brand new league: the Heroes League! It is an additional league after Diamond which can be reached on a monthly basis by passing beyond Diamond 1.
This league does not have the same ranking system as the others—instead it has a scoring ladder. Players move along that ladder based on the amount of Hero Crowns they own, also known as their Hero Score (HS for short). Owning elo crown 1,500 Hero Crowns is the same as having a Hero Score of 1500. These are gained and lost after each ranked game performed in Diamond and the Heroes League.
When entering the Diamond league, every player is granted elo crown 1,000 Hero Crowns to start with. As they progress through Diamond, they already collect (or loose) Hero Crowns (see calculations below). When finally passing Diamond 1 and entering the Heroes League, the amount of Hero Crowns collected represents the current Hero Score—provided it is above 1000. If the Diamond progress was difficult and a player was to enter Heroes League with less than elo crown 1,000 Hero Crowns, their score would be set to 1000.
At the end of the season, players having reached the Heroes League will be down-ranked back to Diamond 5, their Hero Score will be reset, and they will receive a Heroes League chest (20 common cards, 16 rare cards, 8 epic cards and 3 legendary cards, as well as coin 3,000 coins and ruby 100 rubies) as well as rewards based on their final position in the ladder as follow:

- The 1st player in the ladder will earn 100 Fusion Stones, one Elder tome and one Legendary Dragon tome
- The 9 other players in the top 10 will earn 50 Fusion Stones and a Feline tome
- The 90 other players in the top 100 will earn 25 Fusion Stones and a common dragon card
- The 400 other players in the top 500 will earn 10 Fusion Stones and a Pirate tome

CHEAPENED BRAWL

To apologise for the server issues during the last discounted Brawl, we decided to make the Brawl starting on February 25th cheaper as well: all matches will cost two thirds of their original price!

UI IMPROVEMENTS
This release will bring some quality of life and interface improvements, starting with a way to add the player you just battled as a friend!

There will also be new exclusive premium and normal avatars, which can be unlocked for 200 rubies each for premium ones and 1000 coins for normal ones. Make sure to check them in game!

DAILY CHECK-IN CALENDAR

The daily check-in calendar will pursue in March. It will work exactly like the Advent Calendar from December and will cost only $4.99 to boost to Premium.

Happy Stormbounding!

FAQ
- When is the update going to be released?
Temple of Space will be released on February 26th, and Flameless Lizards on March 19th.

- Can I be in both Diamond and Heroes?
No, you are either in the Diamond league or in the Heroes league, but never both. However, when you are in Diamond, you already collect Hero Crowns but your score is not taken into consideration on the Heroes league leaderboard.

- Can I start increasing my Hero Score while in Platinum?
No, amongst all regular leagues, only the Diamond one takes the Hero Score into consideration.

- How can I check how many crowns I have?
When you are in Diamond, you can already see your score in the Heroes League leaderboard, only it is marked with an info icon (?) that says you do not belong to this leaderboard yet.
