Atomfall Hands-On Preview – It’s Like Sniper Elite, But…

When Rebellion Developments announced Atomfall, I was intrigued. I love the Sniper Elite series, and I was excited to see the studio stretch its legs after making nothing but Sniper Elite games since around 2013. An RPG-esque Fallout-style game set in the 1960s after a nuclear disaster turns England into a post-apocalyptic, radioactive quarantine zone? That premise alone had me hooked. Imagining that setting mixed with the incredible mechanics that Rebellion is known for? What could go wrong?

Well, after just over an hour with Atomfall, I have some concerns.

As I mentioned, Atomfall follows the protagonist—an amnesiac with no identity—who must explore a quarantine zone in the Lake District, Northern England, five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster to uncover the truth about what happened. The world is full of doomsday cultists, rogue military factions, robots, radioactive monstrosities, and, of course, bandits. Lots and lots of bandits.

Tread carefully, Atomfall's world includes 'exploding sheep' that can 'infect you with spores that creep into your lungs'

Atomfall dev says Rebellion's open world shooter has 'some experimental stuff' that can have a 'huge influence' on the game world: 'It might work out. It might not'

Rebellion's upcoming Atomfall already draws strong comparisons with Stalker, what with it being an open-world shooter set in a cordoned off zone in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. But it seems the latest game from the Sniper Elite devs may also be taking a leaf out of Dying Light 2's book, if the words of lead designer Ben Fisher are anything to go by...

The new Features trailer for Atomfall® is available to watch here: [previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Gamers who pre-order the Standard Edition of Atomfall® will receive the Basic Supply Bundle DLC which offers additional items and supplies to uncover as you explore. In addition to the Basic Supply Bundle DLC, the Deluxe Edition also gives players an Enhanced Supply Bundle, which includes an exclusive pistol variant, metal detector skin and a skill manual giving character upgrades, as well as 3 days early access. Players will also receive the Story Expansion DLC when released**.

Also available for PC players, exclusive to the Rebellion® Shop, is the Quarantine Edition which includes all rewards within the Deluxe Edition, as well as a host of additional content.

Opening in an abandoned bunker 5 years after a nuclear disaster in Northern England the trailer shows how players enter the world of Atomfall®. In this scene an unnamed worker in a hazmat suit stumbles into your room and asks, ‘who are you?’ This question is just one of the mysteries that players will need to solve if you are to find out what happened at the Windscale atom plant.

From here the trailer teases more of the settings and landscapes that players will need to explore as they get to grips with life inside the quarantine zone. This slice of Northern England includes everything from open moors, rugged hills, dense woodlands and the picture-perfect English village Wyndham. But beware, this is a dangerous and hostile landscape filled with gangs of outlaws, crazed cultists and unexplained horrors. Even the local wildlife poses an immense threat to your life. If you are to navigate this land and survive, you will need to fight for your life and scavenge resources.

Atomfall® is packed with a cast of quirky and eccentric characters that you will meet on your journey. These people have been isolated from the world for some time and while many have adopted a ‘keep calm and carry on’ mentality, some have sought to seize power and twisted events for their own gain. Others have even slipped into more nefarious ways… Your interactions with these characters will uncover various leads, secrets and story threads that will help you discover the truth of what happened during the Windscale disaster. But, needless to say, not everyone you meet means you well and deciding who to trust in the quarantine zone is a matter of life or death.

Atomfall is basically British Fallout with a metal detector, and that'll do me chuck

Featured in the PC Gaming Show's Most Wanted with new gameplay footage, Rebellion's Atomfall is essentially out to answer the question "What if Stalker, but in 1960s Britain?" The game is an alt-history that takes as its foundation the Windscale fire of 1957, the biggest nuclear disaster in UK history, which saw three days of fire and radioactive fallout spreading across the UK and Europe. At the time the UK government covered-up just how bad things had gotten: In Atomfall, the area around the disaster is quarantined, and things get even worse...
