Backbone: Post Localisation Patch #1

Hello friends,

We released a small patch to improve our visual accessibility in the title screen and pause menu. It adds a simple highlighting box around menu items, the selection of which was difficult to see on previous builds.

We also added a toggle to the language switching option as некоторые игроки случайно нажимали кнопку переключения....oops sorry, I mean, some players were accidentally pressing the language switching button by mistake and not knowing what was happening or how to switch it back.

We also addressed some of the bugs and quirks our players were reporting.

Thanks for playing!

One Day Left of the Autumn Sale & Steam Award Nominations
Backbone is on sale right now!
We know some folks just wishlist things so you know when they go on sale. It's ok. We get it. So if that sounds like you, we just wanted to let you know your moment is here!

Also, a quick note in case you missed it: a language update arrived last month including Russian, Spanish, German, Polish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese. If you've just been holding off to play in your native language, now's the time.

And finally.... there's another quality of life fix coming very soon, so current and future players, keep your eyes open!
Nominate Backbone for Outstanding Visual Style
A quick reminder that the Steam Award nominations will also close when the sale ends. If you enjoyed Backbone and all the game's unique visual landscape and incredibly detailed dystopian world, we humbly ask for an Outstanding Visual Style nomination to recognize the 8 artists who spent 4 years blending 2D pixel art and 3D to create it.

Our sincerest thanks,

EggNut & Raw Fury

Nominate Backbone for the Outstanding Visual Style award!

We take great pride in Backbone's visuals, with it's distinctive and unique quirks. It's something that the team at EggNut worked incredibly hard on, and we hope to see that recognised in the upcoming Steam Awards.

Backbone brings to life a dystopian reimagining of Vancouver, BC by combining high-resolution pixel art and 3D effects such as dynamic lighting, pouring rain, volumetric fog and neon lights. In order to achieve this, the team started with walks around the very real Vancouver.

Then those scenes were concepted in 2D and reimagined for an anthropomorphic world heavily influenced by real world class systems. Finally, digital artists went in and hand-placed every pixel to create a rich world full of careful nuance and realistic detail, with every inch of screen filled with life and movement.

If you've felt compelled by Backbone's distinctive aesthetic, we hope that you can find a moment to consider nominating it for the 'Outstanding Visual Style' Steam Award. Thank you for your time and continued support.

Localization Update!

Localization Update Patch Notes:
 • The following Languages are now supported in the game: Japanese, French, German, Russian, Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and Spanish
 • A language toggle button has been added to allow players to seamlessly switch between two selected languages at any point.
 • Technical and stability improvements

A Message from Raw Fury:

The day has arrived, and the update is live! Here on PC (plus on the newly released PlayStation and Xbox versions), players can now experience the story of Backbone in nine different languages. Additionally, the game is included in Steam's Halloween Sale at 25% off -- so if you've been waiting to get the game, this may be your moment.

To anyone about to play Backbone for the very first time, we'd like to share again the message EggNut co-founders Aleksandra and Nikita wrote just after launch earlier this year:

"Backbone is a deeply personal project for us, and it encapsulates our lived experiences and common humanity. We knew what we wanted to say and we said it. We stand by it and we are proud of it. But now this game is yours. You decide what to do with it, what to think of it and how to feel about it. We could never truly know your heart and all the beautiful, intricate complexity of what makes you human. All we ever wanted to do is show a little mirror of our souls and hope that in it, you can recognize yours.

"We are eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to say something that is honest, true, and vulnerable for us. We made the game we’ve always wanted to play. We feel less alone in the sea of uncaring humanity, because now we share it with you."

That being said, we hope you find whatever you're looking for in this story and that you find a piece, however small, to take with you when you've finished the game.

Sincerely,
Raw Fury

Eight new languages coming next week

Dear friends,

First off, another thank you to anyone and everyone who’s played Backbone, reviewed the game, and shared your experience with us or with each other. Since release, we’ve been hard at work trying to bring the game to even more players worldwide. In that spirit, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be releasing a major localization update next week!

As of Thursday, October 28th, you’ll be able to interact with dystopian Vancouver in a total of nine languages, adding Japanese, French, German, Russian, Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and Spanish to the list. In this update, we’ve introduced a feature into the game allowing players to instantly swap between two chosen languages with a quick keystroke. Having collectively experienced quite a lot of language learning through TV shows, films, and videogames, we hope this is a great tool for any of you who are trying to learn another language, as well.

For anyone who would like to take the game to the big screen, from the comfort of your bed / couch / bean bag chair, Backbone will also be releasing on PlayStation and Xbox next week.

We look forward to welcoming many new players to Backbone in the coming weeks, and we hope to share news soon about Backbone’s arrival on Mac, Linux, and Switch.

Thanks for joining us on the adventure!
