Dev Diary: The True Meaning of Christm—I mean Beta

Greetings, Interns!

As the holiday break arrives—bringing some well-earned rest for the Times & Galaxy development team—it seems prime time to share an update.

Times & Galaxy has entered its Beta milestone: the content is (mostly) complete, the scope is finalized, and the focus is now on polishing the overall experience.

“It’s a shift in our giant game, from creating content to making it good,” Creative Director Ben Gelinas explains. “We have so many words in this game, so much art—It’s huge. And with Beta, I'm finally getting a chance to step back and go, ‘What have we done?’”

The best robo journalists find moments like this

To help figure that out, Times & Galaxy just wrapped up a round of “family and friends” playtesting. For the first time, the entire game was open to players beyond the developers, offering vital feedback on the gameplay experience.

And those early responses have been positive! Comments like "I love the aesthetic overall – “it's totally unique” and “I would die for Janitorbot” help the team know they’re on the right track. There’s been criticism too, of course: there are plenty of bugs left to squish before the game ships, and one playtester felt there were almost too many characters to meet. For now, that’s being considered a good problem to have.

The importance of these early responses can’t be understated: Beta is about getting a chance to feel how everything’s coming together, to check that every element of the gameplay experience is landing as intended.

“I think 99 percent of level design is like, ‘Does this feel good?’ Because everything will feel great, and then the moment something feels off, you immediately get thrown out of it,” Art Director Kate Craig says. “So it's just about sanding off all those edges and trying to make decisions that don't make you mad.”

This is why beta testing is important.

That goes not just for levels, but writing, artwork, game mechanics, and UI—the next few months will ensure that Times & Galaxy coheres into a fully-realized take on journalism… in space.

“It's really neat to see how it’s come alive,” Gelinas says. “This started out as a game that was very personal for me: it's mashing up my past career as a journalist with my present career as a game developer, but also bringing in a lot of my super weird interests like bizarre characters and humor and hyper-detailed settings. As I brought on other weirdos [to the dev team], this world and the game has expanded into something that is not just mine anymore. Everybody on the team has their own stamp on this thing."

Times & Galaxy is part of IndieCade Anywhere and Everywhere!

We're pleased to announce that Times & Galaxy is participating in the IndieCade Anywhere and Everywhere Festival on Steam!

Embark on an interplanetary adventure as the first robo reporter for the Times & Galaxy, the solar system's most trusted holopaper. You're just an intern, but if you can get the scoop, write great stories, and impress your colleagues, maybe you'll get to keep your job!

Times & Galaxy is a colourful narrative adventure game about a fictional solar system as seen through the eyes of an intrepid but green (and robotic) intern reporter. The writers at Copychaser spent years working as journalists before entering the games industry and have a deep love of local journalism and the connections it creates in communities around the world. Their previous game was the acclaimed Speed Dating for Ghosts.

It's a truly unique adventure game where you can step into the metal boots of the first-ever robo reporter. Chase down leads, break system-rocking news, get quotes, make friends (or enemies), eat a dirt pie! It's your solar system to explore, your story to tell and your job on the line, intern.

You do actual journalism in the game, the implementation of which is authentic given the development team's background and also a unique mechanic that's not really present in other games. Whilst out on assignment, you will interview subjects and gather clues, from which you'll then build and submit a story.

The more thorough you are, the more options you will have for the game's unique Build-a-Story™ tool, which will also let you choose how to position the story, whether it's a hard-hitting expose, or tabloid hyperbole. Ultimately, your choices will impact how your editors, and the readers will react to the story, and over time, will begin

It is important to note that Times & Galaxy is not a journalism simulator, like most other games that tackle this subject. Times & Galaxy is a narrative adventure first and foremost - where you do journalism as a core mechanic - with a Sitcom / Saturday Morning Cartoon feel.

In-between missions, you'll also get to explore the Scanner, which is is more than just a newsroom. The Scanner is where you sleep, eat, work and relax - a large explorable hub where you'll get to engage with casual tasks and get to know a diverse and colorful crew including your fellow reporters, the editorial staff, pilots and ship's crew. Including those aboard the Scanner, there will be around 100 NPCs to get to know in the final game.

Demo Version 0.10.3500 Now Live

Howdy Reporterbots!

I've just pushed a significant update to the Times & Galaxy demo. The update focuses on bug fixes and general stability, especially around the save/load system as well as the behavior of characters when you leave and return to the game. A few players reported some funky behavior from characters, especially on the Scanner and in the Cat Show, where they would move to previous positions and repeat lines if you exited out and then continued to play. These issues should be fixed now (knock on space-wood).

When you update, make sure your version number in the top left corner of the main menu reads 0.10.3500.

It's best practice to start a new game and not try to continue your save from the previous demo version. It might work fine, but yeah, it's been a while since we updated the demo and this may introduce weird bugs that could otherwise be avoided.

If you encounter any other issues on this version of the demo, please hop into the bug reporting thread on our Steam forum and let us know what broke and what you were doing when it broke.

Excited to show you all more very soon. For now, if you've put off playing the demo, now is a great time to jump in and see what our weird game is all about.

Thanks for your support and tell five friends about our game before sundown or you'll be cursed!*

👁️❤️🛸,
Ben
