Resident Evil 2 News

Resident Evil 2 just got an unofficial HD remaster, and you can play it now

I've completed Resident Evil 2 probaby 100 times, and that's not an exaggeration. Some years ago, I used to speedrun it, which meant playing the entire Leon A scenario back to back maybe twice or three times a day. From the Raccoon City streets to the RPD building, the narrow sewers and the Umbrella lab, I feel like I know every inch of Capcom's classic survival horror game by heart. I like RE2 Remake, but the original will always be the best. With that in mind, and rumors whirling about both Resident Evil 9 and a possible remake of Code Veronica, if you want to revisit Resident Evil 2 now it's on GOG, a new, unofficial HD remaster mod is perfect for bringing layers of extra detail to one of the all-time greats.

We're still waiting for confirmation on what's next for Resident Evil, be it a fully fledged RE9, a Code Veronica remake, or maybe a fresh version of the hard-to-love Resident Evil Zero. Nevertheless, the Capcom survival horror is ticking over thanks to a vital re-release of one of the greatest games in the entire series, Resident Evil 2. RE2 Remake is a superlative reimagining of the fixed-camera classic, but the 1998 original is scarier, more atmospheric, and a vital part of videogame history. It also brought us Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield for the first time, as well as the iconic Raccoon City police station. Resident Evil 2 finally getting a decent PC port, and it's here soon

Ever since I played Capcom's 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, I've been eagerly waiting for the original to come to PC. With the seminal survival horror series jumping between genres over the last three decades, it's been hard to easily find and play the trilogy that started it all. The remakes of RE2 and RE4 are excellent, the first-person adventures of Ethan Winters are a return to form, and Resident Evil 9 anticipation is at a fever pitch. Amidst all that, however, GOG is slowly releasing the original Resident Evil trilogy on PC, and RE2 is finally almost here.

The 90s version of the original Resident Evil is now easily grabbable on modern PCs, with 2 and 3 coming soon

If you've been itching to play the original 90s version of the game that kicked off the Resident Evil series by introducing us all to just how funny it can be to have a live-action intro that's so stuck in that decade it might as well be listening to Aqua's Barbie Girl while playing pick-up ball with prime Michael Jordan, you're in luck.

The PC port of original Resi from 1996, long something that that's been tough to get ahold of in a format that allows you to easily play it on a modern PC, with it not being on Steam. Now though, it's been brought back, by Capcom and a storefront that specialises in, well, good old games.

You can find this original PC version of Resident Evil on GOG.com as of today, with it being available for £8.99 / $9.99. While it has been updated to to ensure it works properly with the Windows 10 and 11 that a lot of today's PCs use, unless you're a clever clogs that prefers something like Linux, the tweaks that GOG's made are designed to be pretty light - i.e you're not getting a remake that switches up the original experience too much.
