Resident Evil 2 News

Resident Evil 2 (the remake) has already nearly outsold Resident Evil 2 (the original)

May 21, 2019 The Resident Evil 2 remake has sold 4.2 million units.

Resident Evil 2 sales - that is, copies of the 1998 PlayStation original - currently hover at around 4.96 million, putting it in sixth place among every game Capcom has ever released. But while RE2 got a two decade head start, its remake is catching up fast. Two months after launch, the remake had sold 4.2 million units, just cracking Capcom's all-time top ten.

Those numbers are accurate up through March 31, so it's possible the remake has already surpassed the original in the month and a half since then. We'll likely see when the next financial quarter rolls around. The studio is making the most of the game's success, too - Capcom's got "numerous" new games in development using the RE Engine.

You can see the full Capcom sales rankings at the company's official site (via Gematsu). Another success story in this update is Devil May Cry V, which sold 2.1 million copies between March 8 and March 21. Capcom said those DMC5 sales have "successfully reinvigorated" the series as part of the company's latest financial report.

Resident Evil 2 sets a new standard for remakes

Resident Evil 2 is probably the best remake ever made. That's high praise, but it is absolutely warranted: Capcom has created exactly what you want out of a remake. This is the story, world, and characters that you remember, but built from the ground up in a modern engine, and using modern gameplay mechanics. This is no halfway house remaster; this is what everyone wants from the Final Fantasy VII remake, but applied to one of the 1990s' greatest horror games.

The E3 playable demo is short, but demonstrates the two greatest strengths of this remake. The Raccoon City Police Station is exactly how you remember it; an almost gothic labyrinth of passages, with secret routes that require medallions to access them.

It is, once again, Leon Kennedy's first day on the job, and he makes progress through his dreadful career start in a slow, deliberate manner with extensive use of cautious room exploration and puzzle solving. But all of this is rendered in the Resident Evil 7 engine, and played from Resi 4's over-the-shoulder perspective. As such, the game looks stunning, and arguably plays better than the series ever has.

Resident Evil 2 gets officially stripped of Denuvo DRM

The Resident Evil 2 remake launched early this year, and as many triple-A games do, it came with the controversial DRM layer of Denuvo Anti-Tamper tech. Now - as some triple-A games have done in the past - Denuvo has been removed from the game entirely, so if DRM is a dealbreaker for you, you've got a fresh gaming option.

The Steam page for Resident Evil 2 remake no longer notes the presence of Denuvo (via DSOGaming), and the file history on SteamDB confirms that the tech has been removed. As of December 18, Capcom has "removed 3rd-Party DRM" and Denuvo's "five different PC within a day machine activation limit."

Scene trackers show that Resident Evil 2 remake was cracked within its first week of release, so anyone serious about pirating the game has already had ample opportunity to do so. The timing's likely connected with the other recent updates around the game. RE2 now has a message teasing its soon-to-be-remade sequel, and other Resident Evil 3 easter eggs have popped up in a new demo.

Here are the Resident Evil 2 remake's system requirements

Resident Evil 2's fancy remake is looking like an appropriately spooky modernization, but you'll be happy to know that the game's system requirements aren't quite so scary - despite all those impressive shadows and the stunningly rendered gore and viscera. If your gaming rig is even halfway modern you should be good to go on the second REmake.

Eagle-eyed RE fans might note that the requirements below are very familiar - in fact, they're pretty much exactly the same as Resident Evil 7. That's not too surprising, given that both games run on the same engine, but it does suggest that there haven't been any substantial upgrades over last year's game - not necessarily a bad thing, since RE7 did look terrifically horrible.
