You can now roll back Resident 2, 3 and 7 graphical upgrades to make mods work again

Resident Evil modders have had an eventful week. First, Capcom released a free update for Resident Evils 2, 3 and 7 Biohazard which introduced ray tracing and higher framerates. Unfortunately, the update also broke every existing mod for those games, with no quick fix available.

All's well that ends well, though. In response to "overwhelming community response", Capcom have made the previous versions of the games available again, so that those wishing to use mods can roll back if they wish.

DirectX 11 Non-Ray Tracing Version Now Available

Hello Resident Evil fans,

Due to overwhelming community response, we've reactivated the previous version that does not include ray tracing and enhanced 3D audio. Both enhanced and previous versions will be made available going forward.

Please follow the steps below if you wish to roll back to the previous version.

1. Click LIBRARY in Steam client.
2. Right-click the game and select ""Properties...""
3. In the pop-up menu, select ""BETAS""
4. From the pull-down menu, select ""dx11_non-rt"" (Note: password not required)
5. Close the pop-up menu and let the Steam client auto-update the game
6. You should be able to launch the game normally once the update completes
7. Please note some of the in-game option settings will be reset as a result of the rollback process.

If you would like to update the game to the new version again, simply select ""None"" from the pull-down menu in Step 4 above.

Resident Evil upgrades can't be reversed and fans aren't happy

As revealed at the Capcom Showcase, current-gen Resident Evil upgrade patches for three of the best horror games on PC - Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 Biohazard - have rolled out on Steam. However, a number of fans are upset, as these next-gen Resident Evil updates force players into the new versions - and more, seem to break mods and lighting.

Capcom has released PC graphical upgrades for three of its most recent Resident Evil games, apart from Resident Evil Village, which will get its upgrade alongside a new DLC expansion in October. The first annoyance about the updates is that Capcom has raised the minimum specifications for all three games - Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7.

However, there are a number of details that fans are less than thrilled about. DirectX 12 is now enforced, so if you were barely running these games before, you'll especially struggle now - which also removes pre-Windows 10 PCs from support. In a number of cases, the new ray-traced lighting system is more accurate but may remove the spooky ambience of the previous pre-baked lighting.
