Capcom has just announced next-gen versions of its last few Resident Evil games, and as usual for those of us playing on PC, that means we get to enjoy the upgrades via free patches. Resident Evil 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake, and the Resident Evil 3 remake will all get ported to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S this year, and we'll be getting a patch on PC, too.
The next-gen patches for all three games will add "cutting-edge features including ray tracing, high frame rate and 3D audio", Capcom says in a press release. The updates will arrive "later this year", and existing owners on PlayStation and Xbox will get upgraded to the next-gen version for free. The PC patch will arrive at the same time, as a free download for all players.
Capcom implemented ray tracing for the most recent entry in the series, Resident Evil Village, which also launched on the new consoles last year. Since the older games still run on the same RE Engine, it's not too surprising to see these features implemented there - but it's a nice little bonus, regardless.

What if: Capcom gave Dino Crisis a Resident Evil-like remake?
Capcom has announced it's bringing Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles later this year.
For PS5 players, all three titles also feature DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Players who previously purchased Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, or Resident Evil 7 on PS4 or Xbox One are eligible for an upgrade at no additional cost through the PS4 to digital PS5 upgrade option or Xbox Smart Delivery system.
The recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are now playable in VR thanks to the long-awaited release of the VR mod, which even features Resident Evil Village VR "in an early state" - although you'll need a decent PC to take advantage of it, not to mention nerves of steel.
While the first-person Resident Evil 7 got an official VR version and Resident Evil 4 just got a VR edition exclusively for Oculus Quest 2, the series generally shies away from VR versions - even the direct sequel to RE7, last year's Resident Evil Village, didn't have VR implemented.
Modders have already added first-person controls to most of the recent third-person Resident Evil games, but now there's the option for VR too. Modder Praydog has been working on a VR mod for the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, along with 7 and even Village - as they all use the same RE engine - and it's now finally available to download on Github.
