Update 0.5.8 - Out Now

Today we are releasing the latest quality-of-life update to the game 0.5.8 which brings persistent stats tracking to the game for the first time and a reworked objective capture experience.

To celebrate the release of 0.5.8 we are running an event from 8:30PM GMT+1 (3:30PM EDT) today until late and we would encourage you all to join us.

Capture Experience

One of the most common areas of frustration for players has been the objective capture experience and specifically the inability to stop capturing once started. The intention behind the design was to discourage lone-wolf behaviour and to encourage teamwork but it was consequently frustrating to many players and confusing to new players.

The updated mechanic allows players to stop capturing at any time, but objectives take significantly longer to capture solo to discourage players from trying to ‘snipe’ objectives on their own. The capture speed is increased for each player alive nearby, which rewards attacks by groups of players working together and gives the defenders an additional tactical option of eliminating attacking players near to the objective to delay the capture.

The new mechanic is experimental and we would love to hear your feedback on what you think of the new mechanic once you have tried it.

Stats & Ranking

The second significant change in 0.5.8 is the introduction of persistent stats tracking into the game. Your kills, deaths, captures and numerous other stats are now saved and they are available to view in a new page on the main menu.

We have also completely reworked the scoring system to better reward teamwork and to introduce a new player ranking system to distinguish new and experienced players and you can see the rank of each player on the scoreboard. All players will continue to have the same access to weapons and roles no matter their rank.

What’s next?

Alongside working on 0.5.8 we have been continuing our work towards 0.6 but we wanted particularly to release the persistent stats and ranking changes to the game so our loyal players have the opportunity to distinguish themselves from fresh faced recruits attracted by events and new content in 0.6.

Translation Help

The game currently supports English, French, Spanish, German, Norwegian & Swedish but we would like to expand the localisation of the game to as many languages as possible.

If you would like to help translate the game into any new or existing languages please get in touch.

That’s all for this time. Join us later in-game and keep your eye out for more events coming soon to Vanguard and as always our community discord for pick-up games with the community.

Update 0.5.7 – Coming Friday

This Friday (12th July) we’ll be releasing the latest update to the game 0.5.7. Don't forget to join our our community discord for pick-up games with the community.

The update expands Lion-sur-Mer and brings a new set of objectives in largely unseen parts of the map. This update also adds 3D markers for NCOs to give orders, a new event feed so you know exactly when the community are gathering to play as well as stability improvements.

We’ll talk a bit more about some of the things we have planned for future updates.

What to expect on Friday in Update 0.5.7

Operation Variants – Lion-sur-Mer

We are working on new maps, expanding our existing maps, adding new objectives and creating new scenarios. We call these variations on maps operation variants.

Before version 0.5.7 each of our maps features a single set of objectives, which can be played either during the day or night. On Friday we’ll be releasing the first of our operation variants which brings a new and fresh experience to Lion-sur-Mer and features new areas, new objectives and of course new tactics as a result.

Operation variants will be added to the existing map rotation so you will find yourself playing the new scenario both during the day and at night. With the release of the first operation variant on Lion-sur-Mer, this increases the number of variations to our maps from 6 to 8…. and we have more to come.

The new map areas also open up new tactical options for attackers when fighting over the original objectives (A).

Order Markers

To help NCOs communicate their orders more clearly they can now place a floating marker which is displayed to their squadmates in green and the rest of their team in blue. To use the new markers, NCOs simply look at the desired location (or a nearby object) for the marker and press K (customisable in the menu).

Event Feed

We have also added an event feed which appears from-to-time in the main menu and displays upcoming events automatically converted to your local timezone.

The feed will feature both our own official events and community organised events so if you are planning to run your own event please get in touch via our Discord or our forum.

Behind the Scenes

This update has taken longer than previous updates as it’s not the only thing we have been working on. Alongside the changes already featured, stability improvements and bug fixes we have also been working on more major changes.

Player Stats & Levels
We have redesigned the scoring system, added far more detailed stats (e.g. individual weapon accuracies) and added player leveling to the game in an upcoming patch. Player levels will be visible ingame for prestige but every player will continue to have access to all the equipment, kits and roles.

Redesigned Objective Capture
We have heard loud cries that the current capture experience – where you can’t stop capturing – can be very frustrating and we are listening. The current mechanism punishes lone-wolf players which we believe is important but we are experimenting with alternative, less frustrating, designs.

New Nation
Enough said for now

New Maps
Operation variants are fun but we are also working on new maps. Both for our British/German forces and for our mystery new national forces.

That’s all for this time. Join us on Friday when 0.5.7 lands on Steam and keep your eye out for more events coming soon to Vanguard and as always our community discord for pick-up games with the community.

Game Update – 0.5.6

This week we bring another quality of life update with bug fixes and improved AFK handling while we continue our work on more major updates to come. Don't forget to join our the community Discord to find squadmates and discuss this update.

As announced last week this will be last of our weekly updates. We have now released 6 updates in 6 weeks and the game is significantly better for those updates and more importantly your feedback. Whilst we have enjoyed sharing weekly updates to the game with the community our focus has shifted towards new content and features which require far more testing than a week permits.

The next update 0.5.7 will bring some new features and more bug fixes next month but we are also working on the first major content update to the game which will be coming in 0.6.0.

AFK Handling

One area where we have received a lot of feedback is regarding how we handle idle players. In the first version of AFK handling we brought in a very strict 60 second idle limit after which a player was kicked from the server. Whilst this solved the problem with idle players spoiling the fun for active players it was harsh and didn’t allow time for players to quickly nip away from their keyboard.

In this new version we now kick players first into spectator mode before we kick them from the server after a longer wait. We have also increased the initial idle time from 60 seconds to 90 seconds.

Now after 90 idle seconds a player is killed and switched to spectator mode. They will be kicked after a further 210 seconds if no input is detected. Players won’t be respawned while idle.

Version 0.5.6

Thank you to everyone who has provided us with constructive feedback. We read all of it even if we don’t respond to all of it. If you have a crash and get prompted to submit a crash report – please submit it so we are notified and we can look into the cause.

Known Issues:
  • Graphical glitches and missing weapons when joining the game for the first time
  • Decals can be stubborn and cause texture glitches
  • Very rarely a player be stuck in spectator mode while in pre-game. You can workaround this issue by opening console using ` and typing kill into the console and hitting enter. Close the console using

Key Changes / Highlights:
  • Updated idle system to first move the player to spectator before kicking

Game Update – 0.5.5

This week we bring the fifth quality of life update to the game since launch. As we discussed in our feature roadmap article we have been focused on short term bug fixes and responding to feedback over the last few weeks. Don't forget to join our the community Discord to find squadmates and discuss this update.

We are nearing completion of the short-term features on the roadmap and so will be switching to a longer patch cycle after the release of 0.5.6 next week. The following update, 0.5.7 is expected 3-4 weeks later which will include some new features which require more exhaustive testing than a single week allows.

We are also at work on 0.6.0 behind the scenes but we will talk more about what that brings in the future.
