Minor Workshop Updates

Some of you might have noticed that we have published several updates in a row over the last few days. They are mostly related to the Workshop, as we still occasionally stumble upon some minor issues and missing features that need to get fixed or implemented.

Full changelog:
  • Added: new Lua wrappers to expose sound and music API;
  • Added: missing property setters in some types exposed to Lua;
  • Fixed: inconsequential asset paths in the mods;
  • Fixed: hot reload not working with user levels;
  • Fixed: hard crashes happening in Lua wrappers not logging any meaningful error messages;
  • Upgraded: SDL 2.0.10 to 2.0.12.

That's all for now. Happy modding!

Carrion Workshop Features - Open Beta

The new Carrion build is now available in the beta branch on Steam (no passphrase needed) and gets new updates frequently.

New features include:
  • Streamlined and safer mod loading - each mod is a self-contained hermetic package stored in a single folder and doesn't require hacking/changing the base game's resources. When the game loads a mod, it prioritizes loading the mod's resources over the base game's ones, falling back to the original assets only if necessary.
  • Save files stored separately for each mod allowing for fail-safe experimentation.
  • In-game mod browser - subscribe to Workshop items or unzip the mods into a "UserContent" folder to make them visible in the game!
  • User-Generated Content Toolkit shipped alongside the game's binary.
  • Basic Lua integration - makes it possible to add new functionality or load extra assets (check out the Streaming Avatar mod: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2252217602).
...and more to come!

Lost in Carrion? This map might help

Alien fleshbeasts are really good at flinging, creeping, bashing, and gnawing on the bones of hapless scientists. But as the formless biological horror in Carrion, it's easy to realise that The Thing doesn't have a great sense of direction - or an in-game map. It's easy to get lost in Carrion's caverns. What's a tentacled meat monster to do?

One option is to use this handy map created by two Carrion fans working in collaboration. The first step was to map out the game, and that was accomplished by YouTuber Demajen. Demajen specialises in videogame map making, and while he enjoyed finding his way around in Carrion, he noticed that plenty of players posting on the Steam forums did not. Setting Carrion to run at 720p, Demajen used console commands to view Carrion in its "pristine" state. He then took screenshots of each room in the game, and then carefully pieced them together in Photoshop.

That generated a massive, 462 megabyte file, which Redditor MrDrWho used to create an Adobe Acrobat file. This let MrDrWho link up the passageways that allow the Carrion monster to travel between areas in the indie game quickly, and the PDF file will zip you from one end of a tunnel to the other at the click of a mouse.
