Halo modder remakes Mario Kart

We've a better chance of outrunning a blue shell than we do getting Mario Kart on PC. Modders have been stepping up to fill the gap, though, and the latest is Halo Kart.

Just as it says in the title, this mod is a version of Nintendo's racing game built into the FPS games. When starting a race, players spawn in a lobby and have to enter the drivers seat of one of twelve mini-warthogs. Then you're warped to the start line, on one of several courses based on Mario Kart 64. Tracks include some of Halo's weapons, and the first to complete three laps wins.

A short clip was posted on Reddit XwiktorroX, showing a solitary Spartan in their tiny kart, doing a practice lap on Mario Speedway. With multiple players and weapons activated, you can play two-to-a-kart, and the standard physics of Halo multiplayer apply, chaotic explosions and flips and everything else intact. The mod was released last year by InfernoPlus, who you might remember from that Dark Souls x Halo mashup. You'll need a valid copy of the first Halo, and then you can find full installation instructions here.

MCC Flight Update

Hello Friends,

For those following MCC news close over on Halo Waypoint, you may have heard that we are currently conducting the Season 6 Flight for Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC and Xbox One! Today, we have updated the flight to include various updates to include the new “Exchange,” performance improvements to the all-new Halo 3 map, “Waterfall,” and various bug fixes.

These updates are in the Flight build only and cannot be accessed through the MCC product.

As a reminder or if you’re new to MCC, “Flighting” is when we give select players, called Halo Insiders, access to unreleased features through a special build of the game. The goal of a Flight is to test new features and content across a variety of devices, inputs and regions to gather player feedback and help us ensure our updates are ready for the ‘live’ version of the game. If you’re interested in becoming a Halo Insider and helping Flight (and we hope you are!) please find instructions on how to register below.

Below are the items currently in flight as of today’s update!
  • Season 6 customization content.
  • 2 new maps for Halo 3 from Halo Online (Edge and Waterfall).
  • FOV slider support for all Xbox One consoles.
  • FOV slider will no longer be locked when Xbox Series X|S devices are set to 120hz.
  • Double key bindings.
  • Mouse & keyboard support for consoles.
  • Advanced audio options.
  • Weapon Display Offsets for view model position customization options.
  • MCC’s all new customization content, “Exchange.”
  • A variety of additional bug fixes.

We have just a few new things in there that players can try out, interact with, and experience for the first time in a Halo game.

For players curious about what the “Exchange” is, think of it as a place to redeem unused season points. The items on offer will change week to week, and while there may be some new content (and bundles) there is also the opportunity to enjoy familiar favorites. Specifically we’ll be offering some cosmetics that you may missed out on from previous seasonal challenges, so stop in and see what’s available to scoop up. You’ll get to try it out for the first time in this flight!

If you are interested in jumping in and are a registered Halo Insider here on Halo Waypoint, make sure to head on over to your Halo Insider profile HERE and check the links near the bottom of the page of how to get in game now!

You don’t have a lot of time to get into it, but the flight has been extended to next Monday, March 15, at 10 AM Pacific Time (UTC-7). So get in quick and let us know your feedback over HERE in our forums. And if you do encounter a bug that is not on the Known Issues list, please make sure to submit a ticket at the Insider Halo Support site. As a note, the previous few links will not work for you if you aren’t a Halo Insider or didn’t make the cut off to be invited to the flight.

If you aren’t a Halo Insider, the time is now to register! It’s quick and easy to opt-in – just head HERE and enter your info. Make sure to opt-in for communications and complete your email preferences, and you’re all good to go.

Halo 3 is getting a new map from Halo Online

Not content with performing mere upkeep on Halo: The Master Chief Collection, 343 Industries is bringing new content, too. Halo 3, an FPS game last updated more than a decade ago, is about to get a new map.

The information comes via a post on Halo Waypoint, detailing some of the upcoming flighting on the space games. Listed in everything coming in February is "A new map for Halo 3 from Halo Online", and an accompanying image of the new area for players to batter with rocket launchers and needlers.

Halo Online was a free-to-play Halo multiplayer game that was only ever playable for a brief period in Russia in 2015. Naturally, this has made it a fascination among diehard Master Chief fans, and efforts have been made to put it online in an unofficial capacity, something Microsoft has repeatedly attempted to quash. It was hoped whatever was usable from Halo Online might make its way into the Master Chief Collection, and it seems like 343 Industries has now begun that process, starting with this as-yet-unnamed map.

Bungie deleting old Halo stats in February

As part of the sunsetting process for the Halo series this year, Bungie has announced that the stats it has archived from four of the Halo games will be deleted next month. Players have until February 9 to download their data before it all gets wiped.

Bungie made the announcement in the latest This Week at Bungie, revealing that the nine-year-old dump of player history is due for deletion. In 2013, in the run-up to Destiny coming out in 2014, Bungie migrated all its news, groups, and forums to a revamped website. Everything for the Halo community stayed on a dedicated server, preserved as the developer and the iconic FPS games went in separate directions.

Unfortunately, the time has come for anyone who wants these digital remnants to take them, and the rest to enter the proverbial trash heap. If you have anything saved on an old Bungie profile for Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach, you have until February 9 to retrieve it by whatever means. After that date, the URL will be permanently taken offline.
