The Ascent News

Resident Evil Village, Metroid Dread are the most finished games of 2021

Resident Evil Village may just be the most completed game of the year if game time tracking website HowLongToBeat is accurate. As reported by Axios (via Kotaku), the site listed off the most completed games of the year, with Village leading the list, followed closely by Metroid Dread. Rounding out the top 5 are Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, It Takes Two, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.

Also interesting is the most “retired” (read: abandoned) games, with Valheim topping the list, with 12 Minutes, Loop Hero, The Ascent, and Outriders making up the tightly packed rest of the top 5. Another interesting stat is the longest game, which is Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous by a mile. And of course, the raw data for most people playing a game exists as well, with Forza Horizon 5 taking that honor.

Tracking sites like this should be taken with a grain of salt. However, it’s still a fascinating look at a small sample size’s playing habits and what that says about the games they play. And it’s cool to see this kind of information outside of corporate messaging.

FREE WINTER PACK

Dear Indents,

To celebrate the festive season, we're giving all players The Winter Pack as a free gift, it is the season of giving after all! We’re also happy to announce that all side missions are now fully voiced, and Patch #6 is now live for all players.

FREE WINTER PACK

Download the Winter Pack now for free here on Steam and get festive with the following new content:

A new makeshift hand grenade:

  • Snowball: Throw with the intent to stagger but not kill - to be jolly but not homicidal. A snowball fight is always fun and games, until someone loses an eye. Remember, play ice!

And three new fashion apparels:

  • Buttercup headgear: 'Tis the season of strange on Veles. Horrible visibility, highly flammable and with questionable street cred.
  • Red Danger headgear: Warm your nose and make a statement to boot. A bright red nose like a true alpha, and antlers for immediate intimidation. Don't listen to the fools that say you look silly.
  • Festive shirt: A festive Winter T-shirt

SIDE MISSIONS ARE NOW FULLY VOICED

The Ascent is the first game to use Altered’s augmented voice technology, a new AI-powered tool to augment human voices to create a range of custom voices for new lines of dialogue. Previously, for some of our NPC's especially for side missions, we had used Alien voices with subtitles. We partnered with Altered to create real voices for these characters to make the world of Veles feel even more alive! Altered have helped us in voicing over 800 lines voiced by 40 NPCs using their ground breaking technology.

If you’re a developer and interested to learn more about their software, you can check it out here.

The Ascent’s just released its first DLC update, plus a fifth round of bug fixes

Neon Giant's first DLC update for The Ascent is out now. They say the Cybersec Pack’s contents include “two new weapons, a new tactical, four new pieces of armor and four new animated weapon skins.” They’ve also put together a new trailer showing off these features, which you can take a look at below.

That's pretty much it when it comes to the DLC pack, but along with it, Neon Giant have also dropped a new patch for The Ascent too. This is the fifth patch for the game since its initial launch near the end of July 2021. This one includes fixes for various crashes, increases to the stability in co-op play, improvements to the audio, as well as other miscellaneous changes.

The patch also adds a new feature called Transmogrification, which you’re probably familiar with if you’ve played games like Destiny 2 or World Of Warcraft. In the words of Neon Giant, this’ll allow players to “change their appearance to match the visual style of any armour currently in their inventory by visiting the Stylist and paying a small fee.” Once that’s done, you can equip any armour you want, and your character’s look won’t change.
