Subverse DEV Diary #05

Let’s get the big news out of the way first and the reason you’re all here – when the hell is Elaisha releasing?

I’m here to tell you we’re aiming to release the next update in early October! This update will contain all the features I talked about in the last blog, including the 50+ Pandora scenes, Cinematics, Elaisha waifu, the Kloi faction and a ton of new planets.

I completely understand the frustration of some players that it took us 6 months to release this update. Obviously going forward, this kind of pace is not going to be acceptable for future content update releases. We want to be releasing these at 3-4 month increments not 6 month increments. We have high expectations of ourselves internally, and I know you guys have high expectations as well so I want to make sure everyone understands that we are not getting complacent.

The good news is that the new animators have integrated really well into our workflow and they’re already powering through the update after Elaisha’s! The software side is more complicated – integrating new remote working developers into a behemoth of a project like this in the middle of production has proven to be a challenge, but we have brought a new project manager on board to assist with the process. Combined with our redoubled recruitment effort via agencies, this will help us increase the speed of production for the next major update after Ela as it’s both lighter in features and shorter in length. Our lead developer is also off on paternity leave for the birth of their first child (congratulations to them!), so we’ve had our fair share of unavoidable delays.
THREE STRIKE SYSTEM
I understand there have been some concerns about the difficulty of some upcoming missions, most notably the Battletoads style SHMUP map. In order to help out some of the casual players, we’ve installed a three-strike-system into the missions which means that you can skip the level if you’ve died three times on it. This method helps out our balancing workload, since we can maintain an entertaining level of difficulty while still giving a get-out-of-jail card for some of the players who are not experienced in SHMUPs. Looking forward to seeing how many of you guys end up using it! (but really, that level is not as hard as people are meme’ing it to be)
TRISHA AND JAWZ
We’ve got two new mantics to discover in this update! The enigmatic test-tube baby known only as “Trisha” is a robust front-liner with a new transformation mechanic that lets you switch up your tactics on the fly. We want to begin introducing a bit more tactical depth to the combat this time around, so I can’t wait to see how you guys end up using this mean step-child. Also, obligatory dick pic:

Jawz is what happens when Lily splices the DNA of an extinct animal from Earth with some freaky Prodigium alien DNA. He uses a life-stealing mechanic in grid combat, and is perfect for assassinating your enemies’ squishies. Use him to turn the tide of battle by taking out a key target. Here’s the good doctor testing out its capabilities before battle. Does it check out?
DIRECTIONAL DAMAGE AND EXPLOSIONS
We’ve implemented directional damage in Grid Combat which will add some more tactical depth to the system – the beta testers will soon get their hands on it and then it’ll be ready for prime-time. Surrounding enemies confers significant bonuses, but it works both ways so make sure you protect your waifus at the same time! Everyone loves explosions, so the devs have added some hazardous barrels that you can use to your advantage on certain maps. I don’t know what’s inside these barrels but they sure as hell pack a punch. These are just the first steps towards improving grid combat, and we’re going to be incrementally roll out some features with the drop of each block, until hopefully the 1.0 version of grid combat becomes something we can be really proud of.
GOG RELEASE
And last but not least, I’m delighted to announce that we are finally partnering with GOG to bring Subverse onto their platform along with this update! It’s amazing to see that other platforms are opening up to adult games and Subverse having a positive impact on the industry. I have a deep love of the Witcher games ever since I stumbled upon a second-hand copy of Witcher 1 Enhanced Edition in a store in Cardiff many years ago. I remember being blown away by The Beast quest and from then on CDPR were one of my favorite devs so I’m stoked to be part of the GOG family and so is the rest of the team. But mostly I’m happy that our fans who have been region-locked out of buying the game will finally get to experience the Prodigium galaxy! Thank you to everyone at GOG who worked with us to make this happen.

 • Fixed issue where switching between Waifus, in the middle of a pose transition, would break the transition.
 • Optimized memory management when loading Gallery sounds.
 • Fixed issue where Picture Wall callout was not working properly.
 • Fixed issue where resources were not updating when opening the Gallery.
 • Fixed issue where "Stop Spin" button would not disappear when manually stopping a Waifu.

Subverse EA Dev Diary #4

Hey everyone, this is DC the founder/director of Subverse and I’m here to update you guys on the next major release, which we’re calling the “Ela Update”

As you know we released the Gallery feature drop this week which was delivered by a small strike team, but alongside this, the majority of the team have been also chipping away at the big Ela Update. Let’s take a look at what’s shipping with this beast of an update then!

THE MAIN EVENT
Of course we gotta start with the main attraction! The horny masses are all waiting for the debut of Elaisha Sorn, voiced by the stellar Venus LeMay! Elaisha’s main quest line is a mix of prison break and some Trojan horse action, as the next step of Fortune’s revolution unfolds. For the very first time, you get to experience one of the girls’ homeworlds as we take you down to the surface of Talissan, the beautiful Art Deco-styled homeworld of the Kloi. As I touched on in a previous devblog, the priority was to integrate sex into the quest in a way that didn’t take you out of the action and we’re confident of meeting that challenge!

NEW CINEMATICS
Accompanying the main quest are 13 new cinematics produced just for the Ela update. Unlike the first release, this time around we focused more on character-driven cinematics. I feel like longer, more character driven stuff is what you guys are enjoying the most, especially the ones centered around the waifus. You will of course get to catch up with events at Celestina’s Palace and with fan-favorite General Blythe, as the supporting voice cast makes a return to bring all these to life.

NEW ENEMY FACTION – THE KLOI
It wouldn’t be a major update without the Captain sticking it to some goons, and this time around is no exception. You’ll get to take on the Kloi in both grid and space combat as they unleash the full might of their fleet against you! Alongside the space stuff revealed previously there’s also grid combat boss fights to sink your teeth into as well!

NEW NEBULA – THE HYDRA
We’re going to be unlocking a brand new region of Prodigium Galaxy in this update, and it’s filled with over 100+ new anomalies to discover in total! There’s anomalies like Meatbeat Station, deep inside Chutt space, the mysterious Luby Consortium and of course Ars Gloria where the primitives are apparently all Ass-Men. Absolute savages. You’ll also get to meet a colorful new cast of Sidequest givers, with several new fully voiced quests of this ilk being added. By the way, we are looking into enhancing sidequests (especially how they are resolved) but I’m not sure if that will make it into this update or the next one, so I’ll keep you guys posted on that. Again, the philosophy is to make sure the quests are a bit more waifu-centric and that’s our goal.

NEW PANDORA SCENES
Over 50+ new Pandora scenes are being added in the Ela update, including more for existing girls like DEMI , Lily and Killi. Futa fans will be pleased as there’s a some really cracking futa scenes in this batch! All the while, we are also working on the next evolution of the Pandora system which will launch AFTER this particular Ela Update.

NEW MAPS ‘N MANTICS
We’ve got some new Mantics to discover and breed, and new grid combat maps to test your mettle! I’ll go more in-depth about the critters in the next devblog because we’ve got some really interesting things planned for them! In the meantime, have some cock:

GALLERY PATCH
The Gallery is going to expand further with the Ela update, and you’ll be able to pose her to your lewd liking once she’s been recruited. In the meantime, the devs are going to push a hotfix on the Gallery next week to fix some issues

STUDIO NEWS
I’m thrilled to announce that the game will be getting an official wiki very soon, hosted by us! The wiki is coming together really nicely, I can already tell it’s going to be an excellent supplement to the game and a haven for the lore nerds. Streemster is also still in development, and I also want to mention that we have a new support site up and running.

As you can see the Ela Update is chock full of content, and I’m confident you guys will get a kick out of it as there’s something for everyone here! Keep your eyes peeled on our Twitter account for more sneak peeks coming up!

Version 0.2.1 (07/13/21)

New Features
 • Added Gallery

Bug Fixes
 • Fixed bug where the EULA UI slider was invisible.
 • Fixed bug when hovering over Gallery in the bar would not highlight it properly.

Subverse EA Dev Diary #3

We’re back with another dose of Prodigium Galaxy goodness and the team is excited to share all the juicy details with you guys!
NEW MODE – GALLERY
To tide everyone over until the next chapter of the story is fully released, we’re going to be dropping a brand spanking new game-mode called the Gallery soon.
The Gallery is basically an advanced 3D model viewer where you can ogle your waifus from any angle you desire. It is very much a part of your ship, and we’re going to be tying it in with the rest of progression. Think of it as your private little photography studio, just above Killi’s bar.

We wanted a system where you guys had more freedom to set up the poses in the way you see fit.

Don’t forget to show your friends.

We hope to update the gallery with many more features as they come online, so stay tuned for more info!
The Gallery is currently being worked on and will drop as the first of our “Feature-updates” sometime next month!
THE BLOCKADE
As you guys know, the next chapter revolves around feisty revolutionary Elaisha Sorn. But before you can get your hands on those juicy tanned melons, there’s the small matter of breaking her out of a maximum-security prison.
As part of this experience, there is a unique space mission that you will be able to play inspired by the Battletoads turbo tunnel level. We’re introducing an exciting new side-scrolling mechanic as well as a special boss encounter.
We’ll also be integrating more sex into the main story, as requested by our fans. The Elaisha recruitment mission will be the first example of this design philosophy.
MANTIC UPGRADES
We’ve got some really cool updates in the works for the Mantic system. The goal is to make them worth collecting and to keep them relevant for the duration of the game by evolving them. We want you to see the fruits of your labor present in Grid Combat and PANDORA in a meaningful way. We’re also in the process of replacing some of the placeholder Mantic meshes with much, much cooler-looking critters. I’m pleased to say that we’re collaborating with a special artist that we can’t reveal yet on the hogs for these bad boys, and we think the results will come out stunning!
GRID COMBAT QOL
Not so much an overhaul as a quality-of life improvement, we’re going to be making this part of the game much smoother and comfortable to play. The new upcoming faction will also get an ability or two that might take you by surprise. Some of the tweaks and improvements we’re looking to roll out in the near future are:

- Directional Damage (backstabs)
- Environmental Hazards (exploding barrels)
- Greater variety of maps in both layout and looks
- New AI patterns and priorities
- Moveset tweaks to the Mantics
- More interactions from the waifus
- UI and optimization tweaks
LOGISTICS
As mentioned previously we’re bringing in a lot of new people to the studio. This means that the senior members have had to dedicate a bit of time to make sure the new people are getting up to speed. Naturally, this leads to a temporary decline in the senior members’ output, but think of this as an investment. Over time we hope that these new members will become veterans in their own right, leading to much better productivity in the long term. This buddy system philosophy has served us well in the past and we hope that it continues to do so over Subverse’s lifecycle.

That’s all for now! As mentioned above, our current release strategy is to get some feature drops to you guys in-between the big chapter updates. This will give you something to play instead of waiting for one massive content drop every few months that would contain everything. We believe this is the best solution for everyone.

Signing off!

xoxo
