The State of Early Access - Update #03

We are now approaching the 6 month mark of Early Access, so we think it’s prudent to give you guys an update on where we are and where things are headed!

As always, we wish to thank you all for being a part of development with us. Your feedback and bug reports are invaluable and are helping shape the direction of the game. It is not an exaggeration that the feedback you share with us has a direct impact on our development priorities.

Since our last State of Early Access update, the game has seen 2 major updates. With v0.8.0, you gained access to new decoration and entertainment options, an entirely new system for setting production limits on your resources, major updates to AI behavior, and too many quality of life changes to list here. With v0.8.1, we got more technical as we focused almost entirely on improving performance across the board. We’re pleased to see many reports of significantly improved framerates, especially for larger towns!

Needless to say, there is still a lot we want to add to the game, and there is still a lot we can do to improve performance. So let’s take a look at what’s in store for Farthest Frontier in the next few updates, starting with v0.8.2!

Note: everything you read here is a preview and is subject to change before release. This is not an all-encompassing list of changes and features we are planning for the game before v1.0.

See our latest preview for Farthest Frontier on the official forum.

Farthest Frontier v0.8.1 is now live

Pleased to announce that our latest improvements to the game are now live with v0.8.1!

This update was focused almost exclusively on improving performance and addressing a number of reported bugs. With our first optimization pass, you can look forward to better framerates in towns of all sizes.

We hope you enjoy, and stay tuned for what's in store next!

UPDATE: we have now also pushed hotfix v0.8.1a to address a couple critical issues. If you are still having crashing issues after this hotfix and are using mods, please try disabling melonloader + mods and see if the issue persists.

In 2022's city builder boom, Farthest Frontier's survival systems stand out

We're in the midst of a city builder boom. 2023 is already shaping up to be an outstanding year for city builders, with Frostpunk 2 (hopefully!), Manor Lords, Laysara: Summit Kingdom, Aquatico, and more interesting-looking city building games headed our way. But 2022 was no slouch, either—we got to build a city on a space station in Ixion, rebuild society after a climate catastrophe in Floodland, manage a norse settlement in Land of the Vikings, and survive plagues, tornados, and floods in Settlement Survival, which left Early Access in October...

My favorite city builder of 2022 just got a major update

It still feels a bit strange that Crate Entertainment followed up 2016 dark fantasy ARPG Grim Dawn with… a medieval city builder. But once you start playing Farthest Frontier, the wild shift in genres doesn't seem that odd at all, especially since keeping your citizens alive and healthy through winter storms, raider invasions, bear attacks, and more communicable diseases than a medical journal can be brutally challenging...

Farthest Frontier v0.8.0 is now live
