Unit of the Week #9 - UH-1D

One of the most well-known and mass-produced multipurpose helicopters in the world.
The UH-1 was the first turbine-powered helicopter with two-blade main and tail rotors produced for the U.S. Army by Bell Helicopter Textron. Despite it was originally designated HU-1 the helicopter is more widely known for the Huey nickname. Since 1960, more than 16,000 units have been built in various modifications.

The UH-1D is a 1963 lengthened modification with an increased capacity up to 12 fully-equipped troops and 2 pilots. The payload reached 1815 kg.

Huey was actively used in combat operations during the Vietnam War with around 7,000 helicopters deployed.
The helicopter was widely exported and is still in service of the armed forces of several countries, including the U.S. Marine Corps.

Unit of the Week #8 - M110A2

M110 is a 8 inch (203 mm) self-propelled heavy artillery howitzer entered service of the U.S. Army in 1963. It was designed to provide medium-range, general support artillery fire. The main 8-inch howitzer of the vehicle can be elevated from −2° to +65° and traverse of 30 degrees to left or right. M110's range varies from 16,800 to 25,000 meters when firing standart high explosive projectiles and up to 30,000 meters when firing rocket-assisted projectiles.

The M110 was exported to a number of countries and widely used in several military conflicts: the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, the Iran-Iraq War and other armed conflicts.

The M110 was upgraded several times. The 1978 modification M110A2 was the latest version with a double muzzle brake.

Unit of the Week #7 - 2S3 Akatsiya

Soviet 152 mm self-propelled gun-howitzer (SPG) aimed for suppression and destruction of the enemy's manpower, artillery and tanks. 2S3 Akatsiya entered service of the Soviet Army in 1971.

The vehicle is armed with a 152 mm howitzer D-22 based on a modified variant of the 152 mm D-20 towed gun-howitzer. The main gun can be elevated from −4° to +60° with a turret traverse of a full 360°.
The Akatsiya can fire high explosive projectiles at a maximum range of 18.5 km depending of used charge or rocket assisted projectiles up to 24 km.

In the 50s, the major military doctrine of the USSR was a large-scale nuclear war and the development of artillery was not given due attention. This remained until the late 1960s, when the Soviet military industry started developing its own SPG in response to the already in service of the U.S. Army 155-mm M109 self-propelled howitzer which was capable of firing nuclear projectiles.

2S3 Akatsiya SPGs were exported to foreign countries. It is currently in service with a number of countries, including Russia.

Unit of the Week #6 - T-55A

The T-55 is one of the long-livers of Soviet tanks engineering.
It was developed as an ideal main battle tank for war in Europe with the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons. T-54 series served as a basis for the T-55 tank. Overall more than 50,000 different modernized modifications of T-55 tank were produced in the Soviet Union between 1958 and 1979.

Renewed in 1962 modification T-55A became the world's first serial production tank equipped with an automatic NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protection system. Its improved over T-55 NBC system offered protection against the blast of a nuclear explosion, fast neutrons and even gamma radiation.

Since the 1960s, various modifications of the T-55 were widely exported to Soviet allies and then extensively used in dozens of armed conflicts. Many of them are still in service with the armies of many countries. High popularity of the T-55 tank is due to its good tactical and technical characteristics, reliability, ease of repairs and operation, and ease of modification.
