'83 - Developer Tapes #7 - Commanders

[p]Welcome to another edition of our development update series. In this edition, we're diving into the commander role and its abilities within '83.[/p][p]A crucial role to bring your team to victory, equipped with the ability to call in powerful off map abilities that can turn the tide of battle.[/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]In ’83, each team can field a single Commander, one of the most powerful roles on the battlefield. While technically an infantry class, your primary job isn’t to fight, it’s to lead. As Commander, you’ll spend much of the match in an overhead command view, directing the battle like a real-time strategy game: managing squads, deploying support abilities, and reading the flow of combat from above. [/p][p][/p][h2]Setting up[/h2][p]Your first priority is placing your Command Post. This position is vulnerable, so choose somewhere with strong cover and minimal exposure. From your post you can open the Command Screen, giving you a live top-down view of the entire map. You’ll see squad positions, objectives, enemy markers, and key updates in real time. Think of it as your war room, everything important flows through this interface.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][h2]Giving orders[/h2][p]
You can select squads in several ways: [/p]
  • [p]Click squad names or icons on the Command Screen [/p]
  • [p]Use hotkeys 1-9 to cycle quickly [/p]
  • [p]Click and drag to select multiple players on the map, RTS-style [/p]
[p]To issue orders, select one or more squads and right-click the map: [/p]
  • [p]Right-click an objective to assign attack or defend [/p]
  • [p]Right-click open ground to issue a move command [/p]
  • [p]Hold Shift to adjust selections on the fly [/p]
[p]To coordinate efficiently, Commanders have a dedicated VOIP channel shared only with squad leaders. Use it to plan and direct without the noise of general team comms. [/p][p][/p][p][/p][h2]Support abilities[/h2][p]Commanders also bring a suite of battlefield support options, including: [/p]
  • [p]Artillery and rocket barrages to clear or suppress positions [/p]
  • [p]Smoke shells to block enemy sightlines [/p]
  • [p]Recon aircraft to reveal enemy activity from above [/p]
  • [p]Reinforcement Wave, enabling an instant team-wide respawn [/p]
[p]Here’s how some of these work in practice: [/p][p]Artillery and rocket barrages: From the Command Screen, click a target position selected by you or your squad leaders and call in the relevant strike. You’ll need to wait for confirmation, so remain at your post until you hear it. [/p][p]Creeping Barrage: An artillery strike that advances along a path you define. Click and drag across the map to plot the route the salvos will follow, allowing the barrage to progress in stages. [/p][p]Smoke Screens: Fired as a line of White Phosphorus. Click and drag to set the direction and shape of the screen so it blocks the sightlines you intend. White Phosphorus smoke burns unarmoured targets caught in the blast and produces choking fumes that damage players who attempt to move through it. [/p][p]Aerial Recon: Call in a reconnaissance aircraft to generate a heat map on your team’s overhead maps, showing approximate enemy positions and troop density for a few minutes, as long as you remain at your post. [/p][p]Abilities may cost resources such as fuel or munitions and come with cooldowns, so timing and prioritisation are key. Some can even be adjusted mid-use; for example, shifting an artillery target zone between salvos. [/p][p][/p][p][/p][h2]Do you have what it takes?[/h2][p]Playing Commander is about situational awareness, coordination, and decisive tactical calls. You shape the battlefield, direct the momentum of each push, and guide your team toward victory, or defeat. If you enjoy the bigger picture, making clutch decisions, and enabling your team through smart support rather than raw firepower, the Commander role is for you.[/p][p][/p][p]As the game evolves beyond Early Access, we plan to expand the Commander’s capabilities to deliver even more tactical depth. [p]The ‘83 Weekend Technical Test is live now until Sunday, December 21st 18:00 GMT. [/p][p]Download it by navigating to our Steam Store Page and click "Request Acess". [/p][p][/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p][h2]What do I need to know about this stress test? [/h2][p]This test is primarily intended to get solid data on server performance under load, and find areas of optimizations and improvements to ensure that once we reach Early Access the performance will be in as good a place as possible. [/p][p]This test is limited in scope, and we will only accept as many testers as required to get the server performance data we need. There will be more opportunities for content creators closer to launch, and if you’re interested, make sure to join our Discord and reach out to our developer team directly. [/p][p][/p][h2]I participated in the Steam NextFest demo - what are the improvements since then?[/h2][p]The team has been hard at work incorporating new features, improvements and fleshing out systems based on both our internal development roadmap and the feedback we received both during NextFest and through our closed playtests. Some highlights include:[/p]
  • [p]Graphical improvements and the implementation of DLSS - still a WIP.[/p]
  • [p]You now stay in the server between map changes, and are no longer kicked back to the main menu.[/p]
  • [p]An early iteration of vehicles and tanks - this is probably the most WIP aspect of the game currently and while functional they are by no means final.[/p]
  • [p]Extensive map improvements and overhauls, featuring a total of 3 unique maps with 3 variants each between the two distinct game modes: Frontlines & Assault. This includes a change to the Fjord map to now take place during daytime.[/p]
  • [p]WIP limited destructability (I.E. a tank can crush sandbags and fences), a feature which will be expanded on in the future.[/p]
  • [p]And a bunch more improvements touching every aspect of the game...[/p]

'83 - Developer Tapes #6 - Game Modes

[p]Welcome to another edition of our development update series. In this edition, we're diving into the two core game modes that define the tactical experience of '83: Frontlines and Assault. [/p][p]Each mode offers a distinct take on large-scale, objective-driven warfare, built to encourage coordination, strategic thinking, and squad-level tactics. [/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][h2]Frontlines[/h2][p][/p][p]Frontlines is a dynamic, two-way mode where teams battle to control a linear sequence of objectives stretching across the map. [/p][p]Each team begins with a fortified home base positioned at opposite ends of the battlefield. These bases serve as key infantry and vehicle spawn locations, and represent each side's final line of defence. Spawn protection prevents enemies from entering or attacking inside these bases, ensuring players always have a safe fallback. [/p][p]A real-time frontline system overlays the map in the overhead UI, visually showing territorial control. This line also dictates where Squad Leaders and Commanders can place spawn points. If the front shifts and a rally point ends up behind enemy lines, it will be automatically removed. [/p][p]At match start, both teams hold an equal number of objectives, with a neutral zone in between. Objectives must be captured in a strict linear order, no skipping or flanking rear positions directly. However, branching paths allow for alternate routes and tactical manoeuvres. [/p][p]Respawn tickets are shared by the team. Every time a player respawns, one ticket is consumed. Certain roles, like Squad Leaders or Commanders, may consume additional tickets. When tickets are depleted, that team can no longer respawn. [/p][p]Matches are also time-limited. If neither side completes the objective chain before the timer runs out, fallback win conditions determine the victor. [/p][p]Spawning is multi-layered. Players can respawn at: [/p]
  • [p]Their home base [/p]
  • [p]Any friendly-held objective [/p]
  • [p]Rally Points placed by Squad Leaders [/p]
  • [p]Command Posts placed by the Commander [/p]
[p]However, spawn proximity is affected by nearby enemies. Spawns will shift further back if contested, preventing spawn camping. [/p][p]Commanders play a critical role in Frontlines. They earn resources (fuel and munitions) from objectives linked to their home base. These are spent on powerful off-map abilities, turning every held zone into a strategic asset. [/p][p][/p][h2]Assault [/h2][p][/p][p]Assault mode offers a more asymmetric experience where one team attacks through a sequence of objectives while the other defends. [/p][p]Inspired by the classic Territories mode from Rising Storm, this game mode features a one-directional flow from the attackers’ base to the defenders’ last position. [/p][p]Both teams retain home bases, but in Assault, only vehicle crews can spawn there. [/p][p]Objectives are captured in a linear chain. Once captured, an objective is locked and the next one becomes active. Occasionally, multiple objectives may be active simultaneously, attackers must capture all of them to progress. [/p][p]Respawn tickets once again play a vital role. Vehicle losses and certain specialist roles consume more tickets. If a team is fully eliminated after running out of respawns, they lose the round. [/p][p]The map layout ensures fighting is focused around the active objectives. Players cannot push too far ahead, keeping battles intense and contained. If time expires, defenders win, unless the final objective is being actively contested, which triggers overtime until the fight is resolved. [/p][p]Assault mode is played in two rounds, with each team switching roles. Victory is awarded to the team that wins both rounds, or to the team that progresses furthest if each side wins one. [/p][p]Together, Frontlines and Assault provide complementary experiences: one emphasising fluid, back-and-forth momentum, the other delivering relentless offensive pressure and heroic last stands. [/p][p]Both modes demand communication, teamwork, and smart tactical play, and we can’t wait to see how you take them on in Early Access. [/p][p]Stay tuned to our channels to not miss upcoming Developer Tapes on our road to Early Access Launch.
