New World is beating Counter-Strike 2 on Steam

New World is back, at least for now. The once-fallen MMO is again climbing the Steam charts, as Amazon's first expansion, New World: Rise of the Angry Earth, releases on Steam. With doubled concurrent player count numbers and both the base game and its DLC climbing up the Steam charts, even pushing ahead of Valve's own Counter-Strike 2 in some regions, it's a promising early jolt to life.
RISE OF THE ANGRY EARTH
The lush greenery of Elysian Wilds, powerful new combat options, and primordial Beast Lords await those brave enough to challenge Artemis. You will need to purchase Rise of the Angry Earth to experience the following updates:
NEW STORY
First Light has fallen. Once a welcoming place for newcomers to Aeternum, the lands have been overtaken by the fury of the Angry Earth. No one is certain what has become of the people and villages that once populated the area, and a deadly bramble has kept all but the most intrepid from attempting to find out. This abundance of earthly powers has awakened the mighty Beast Lords, a new possible adversary facing the people of Aeternum… but with them also comes a boon - the secret to taming and riding animals.
MOUNTS
Summon a mount for faster traversal across Aeternum. Master horses, dire wolves, and lions, each with a unique look, customizable equipment and a name you can set. Level up the new Riding Trade Skill to earn upgrades like increased speeds, buffs, attachments and higher tier consumable food for your new friend.
NEW PROGRESSION
Increase your character’s level to 65 and Gear Score to 700 with new attributes to help power up your builds. Increase Trade Skills to level 250 with new items to gather, refine and craft. Complete a new Faction Quest and unlock a new Faction tier loaded with desirable gear and items.
NEW GEAR RARITY: ARTIFACTS
Find and equip Artifacts, a powerful new tier of weapons and armor. Complete a series of quests and awaken the Artifact’s full potential by unlocking its six perks including one unique playstyle-defining perk to change your game.
NEW WEAPON: FLAIL
The Flail is a versatile one-handed weapon with the option for an offhand shield. Use arcane magic to enhance attacks and buff allies or debuff enemies for an easier victory. Through a combination of melee, arcane magic, and strong defenses, the wielder can bolster their group’s effectiveness without dropping the offensive.
A ZONE TRANSFORMED: ELYSIAN WILDS
The southeastern tip of Aeternum, formerly known as First Light, has been invaded by the powers of Artemis and the Angry Earth. Explore the overgrown structures of this bioluminescent landscape and battle the ferocious beasts that have taken refuge in the verdant, unsettled terrain.
NEW EXPEDITION: THE SAVAGE DIVIDE
Embark on a dangerous new Level 62+ Expedition to track down the primordial Beast Lords before chaos emerges from the depths of Aeternum. Mahantaram, the Mammoth Lord, has retreated into madness in the Savage Divide. A sinister mist and unsettling spores pour forth from the mouth of the cavern. As the days go on the howls of the beasts within grow louder and more deranged. The enraged Beast Lords pose a terrible threat to the population of Aeternum if not contained.
NEW HEARTRUNE ABILITY: PRIMAL FURY
Turn into a hulking beast, tower over enemies, and ravage foes with unarmed light and heavy attacks.
SEASON 3 CONTENT
Influence Races, a new Season Pass, a main storyline quest revamp, and more are coming for all players in Season 3. Here are some of the highlights:
NEW SEASON PASS
Season 3 introduces a new Season Journey, new Activity Card, new Challenges, and new rewards.
NEW INFLUENCE RACES
Influence Races are now a scheduled open world PVP game mode with rewards for all participants from each of the 3 Factions. Fight over 3 new Faction control points per territory called Watches, plus the Fort, in a timed race to attack or defend the territory. Wars are guaranteed, so the defenders can win the Race and still compete in War for better rewards.
NEW MAIN STORYLINE QUEST REVAMP: EDENGROVE AND GREAT CLEAVE
The Edengrove and Great Cleave main storylines are getting an overhaul based on player feedback and improvements made to the revamped starting experience. Experience these familiar zones through fresh narratives, more quest variety, and a few new surprises.
WARD, BANE, RESILIENCE AND EXPERTISE REMOVAL
Look forward to more build variety following the removal of Creature Bane Perks, Creature Ward Perks, Resilience Perks, and Expertise. As a result of player feedback, the following balance changes will make even more Perks viable:
 • For Banes, we’re increasing the base damage of magic and ranged weapons in PvE to make them more effective alternatives to melee options against multiple enemies.
 • For Wards, we’re making adjustments on the AI and encounter side to account for the removal of their defensive and offensive benefits. Current items with this perk will receive the “Health” perk instead which increases the player’s health.
 • For Resilience, we’ve added crit reduction to all players via the equip load effects (Light -15%, Medium -20%, Heavy -25%). Current items with this perk will receive the “Health” perk instead which increases the player’s health.
 • For Expertise, we’re making adjustments to the Gear Score drops from all creatures based on their level.
UMBRAL SHARD REMOVAL
• Removed the ability to upgrade gear with Umbral shards.
 • Umbral shards can now be salvaged for coin at a rate of 0.1 coin per Umbral Shard.

The Savage Divide

Greetings, Adventurers!

The powers of Artemis flourish within these caverns of stone and ancient root. Embark on a dangerous new Level 62+ Expedition to track down the primordial Beast Lords before pandemonium emerges from the depths of Aeternum. The elemental chaos of the Savage Divide awaits. This Expedition will release alongside Rise of the Angry Earth on October 3 and require the expansion to enter.

Join the Design Team for an in-depth discussion on everything you need to know about the Expedition in the video below.
LORE
Beneath the mountain of Vigrid, the tribes of the Beast Lords have dug tirelessly to create their new kingdom. Supported by the terraforming magic of Artemis and the Ennead, it took little time for the massive caverns to be carved out from the mountain. Deep within massive chambers expanded forth, interconnected by Ancient channels and ruins of the previously submerged Saircor ruins. Lush alien flora flood into it's depths, brightly illuminating the chambers within their new home.

When the Mammoth Lord first fled back into the depths of the Savage Divide it seemed hope was on the horizon. The Gorilla Lord followed his friend into the maw of the cavern, hoping to quell his rage, deep into the depths of the false promise that would be their demise. Neither has yet to return. Both alpha tribe members have begun to feel the Beast Lord souls manifest within them. Terrible omens for the lost Lords and Aeternum.

Mahantaram’s otherworldly nature reacted violently with the supernatural power of Aeternum. Such planar instability would have alarmed Artemis in a former life, but her Ancient knowledge and hatred of humankind inspired her to make use of this anomaly. Energy drains from the mammoth Beast Lord into bursts of destructive elemental magic. Artemis has confined this force of destruction to the Expedition. For now...
DESIGN
We caught up with Level Designer Darren McKinsey for even more insight into the creation of the Savage Divide.

The Savage Divide was designed to evoke the primal nature of the Beast Lords. It’s incredibly lush with a ton of harvestable objects and multiple corners to explore. This organic feel is one of the key distinctions from prior Expeditions. Beyond aesthetic differences, the Design Team strove to set the Mammoth Lord’s lair apart through non-linear gameplay.

Originally, there were multiple routes throughout the entire Expedition, but the team scaled back to two paths after the complexity confused testers. Darren said the team took a similar approach with the tremendous bosses. Without spoiling too much, he looks forward to seeing what strategies players craft to topple these behemoths. In addition to player freedom, there are hidden rewards throughout the cavern. Discover vistas, a secret chest, and more.

“None of this would have been possible without the support of our co-developers at Lost Boys Interactive,” Darren said. “We want to highlight all of their hard work on this Expedition.”
AUDIO
“Storytelling through sound was a big focus on the audio side for The Savage Divide,“ said Audio Lead Austin DeVries. ”There are 4 main elements in the dungeon – the Environment, the Gorilla Lord, the Mammoth Lord, and the looming presence of Artemis’s grip on them. Musically, each element has a defining motif, harmonic and rhythmic language.“

“I knew I’d need another Frenchman to accomplish this, so I worked with Composer Edouard Brenneisen, who wrote the suite of Elysian Wilds music, which I remixed to hit the flow of the Expedition’s gameplay. Organic percussion, blown sounds, synths, legato smeared strings, female voice whispers and chants + lots of space and a combination of electronic production was the pallet we landed on to bring out the character and narrative of the dungeon. The handsome and talented Sound Designer Michael Finley jumped in to set the tone of the environment through ambience, objects, and finalizing the Mammoth fight. Ed is also handsome and talented.”

“Environment music sets the tone moving into the Gorilla music. It is chaotic, tribal, and should absolutely slap during the fight. There’s a smidge of Donkey Kong influence in there. Artemis is represented through the harmonic language and subtle whispers. Her presence is felt more and more as you progress through the Expedition, combining the motifs of all 4 elements. When ultimately fighting the proud Mammoth, Mahantaram, the influence of Artemis is fully felt.”

“To summarize for my music nerds out there— gameplay storytelling focused flugelhorn and Oud ripping on a distorted 808, Quintuplet Elemental Laser Mammoth fight, Frantic Flute Tribal Gorilla call and response.”
