ORX review early access: a moreish tower defence roguelike that already has strong foundations

The thrill of a card game is in the hand you get dealt. Luck can either be on your side, or you can earn it back by using your wits, carving out a victory you never thought possible. Other times, it all goes to pot and you get absolutely walloped, but hot damn if you didn't go down fighting. ORX has these moments in spades. Part deckbuilder, part roguelike and part tower defence, this is a real-time strategy game played by the seat of your pants, where a rolling deck of cards determines not only what kind of defences you can build, but also what buffs, spells and additional forces you can deploy to help defend your keep from the oncoming hordes. It's a gripping mix that's already claimed over a dozen hours of my time in recent weeks, and it's a number I can only see going up and up and up as it continues to develop in early access.

ORX — 1 Day Until Launch

Greetings, Kings and Queens!

And so we're here, a mere day away from launch. So, what does ORX look like entering Early Access?

Check out the amazing Launch Trailer we've prepared and see for yourself!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

In Early Access ORX will include:
  • Fully playable 4 Act rogue-like campaign
  • 2 playable Factions with distinct gameplay
  • 4 biomes with distinct sub-biomes
  • 7 types of orx and 4 Bosses
  • Elemental and Sephiroth Systems
  • Hundreds of cards for your deck
  • The Encyclopedia where you can check out the cards and learn lore about them
  • And much more!

The best thing about this? It's only the beginning! We will add many more features to ORX in the future, so stay tuned for the Road Map to come!

Today's card pick had to be special too. The one most useful card. The gold mine. The meta-farming Legend. It's Farmlands, of course!

So, what can we learn about them from the Encyclopedia?
The Kingdom of Medea would gradually shrink due to endless wars and eventual natural disasters. Still, it retained its fertile and abundant fields it was known for.

Sounds like the World of ORX wasn't all that peaceful even before the coming of orx! Maybe, we could explore it more some time in the future? *wink-wink*

That's it for Today! Tune in Tomorrow for... THE EARLY ACCESS LAUNCH! Set a reminder from this post to not miss the release!

ORX — 2 Days Until Launch

Greetings, Sultans!

Just earlier this year we've added the Dune Reavers to the game. Focused around units, the 2nd faction of ORX was available only internally and in closed beta builds. They play completely different compared to the Rune Wardens, while still using the familiar mechanics of ORX. This version also included first iteration of elemental buffs for both orx and the player, new progression system and many more smaller changes!

Learn more about the Dune Reavers and how to play them in our 'Factions Explained' post:

The only thing that is as hot as the sun in the lands of the Dune Reavers is the Rune of Embers. This is a staple card for Rune Wardens, which adds damage to a target unit or castle. And we all like to deal lots of damage!

So what does Encyclopedia say about this card?
The fire rune of The First Great War with Kharima. It was forged by Stein the Record Keeper and served to turn the tide of the war. The ancient runes were truly devastating compared to the ones used today…

Runes of old were much more devastating? Well, whoever wrote this clearly never tried stacking 20 Runes of Embers!

That's it for Today! Tune in Tomorrow for the last part of ORX development history. And, maybe, a look at its future?

ORX — 3 Days Until Launch

Hello, dear Wardens!

Let's continue looking back at previous iterations of ORX. This version's highlight were new castle visuals (which are quickly torn down by orx in the gif), tower upgrades and new biomes like Desert Ruins (which still didn't have final visuals back then). Fun fact: the build for internal testing had huge hordes and was really hard to play!

If you played the demo and used tower upgrades, your favourite probably was Blast Tower. And we totally share the sentiment — great damage AND AoE? What's not to love!

Let's take a look at what the Encyclopedia says about this card!
The Rune Guardians didn’t just imbue their armor with runes and charmed their arms. Rune magick allowed it’s users to manipulate chemical reagents, which led to the creation of terrifying weapons.

And this is it for Today! Tune in Tomorrow, as we continue looking back at ORX prior to it's Early Access Launch!

ORX — 4 Days Until Launch

Greetings, Kings and Queens!

Only 4 days left until ORX Early Access Launch! Join us as we take a look at older versions of the game and share trivia about our favorite cards.

Let's look at how ORX looked at the very beginning. Attack lines for orx, weird curved walls, castle repair for gold and different visuals — ah, the days of old!

OLD BUILD
CURRENT BUILD

Even back then ORX already had runes as cards. And one of them is very dear to our heart — Rune of Rock, which gives more HP to your castles. Also, have you ever noticed that its art features a chonky chicken?

It also has a very interesting description in the in-game Library:
The first Rune to ever exist created by the forgers of Sturn in a distant age. It contained the harsh and enduring resilience of the Earth. Count Abel’s alchemists tore this raw power from inside of a gigantic rock and sealed it in a rune.

That's it for Today — tune in Tomorrow for more stories about the development of ORX and card trivia.
