Baldur's Gate 3's romance is so much more than a bolted-on dating sim, it's a masterclass in layering character complexity

There are many, many reasons to love Baldur's Gate 3. Larian's meticulous craft shines through at every level, from its beautiful rendition of Faerun to its sparkling narrative. What impresses me most of all, though, is the sheer amount of care shown towards its leading cast, and the complexity of its inter-character relations, platonic or otherwise. I've never played an RPG that handles romance with as much nuance, and it's the first to make me spin up another campaign purely to experience every dimension it reveals for each character.

I'm the biggest Baldur's Gate 3 fan, but the HBO TV show is filling me with dread




Baldur's Gate 3 is too big for Hasbro to leave alone. We already knew that, despite Larian moving onto greener pastures, Wizards of the Coast and its owner wanted to do a sequel, and we'll almost certainly see a sequel. But first we're getting a TV show, and I can't help but think that's a big mistake...

Baldur's Gate 3's publishing director doesn't think the HBO series "can trump our writers," but hopes it treats Larian's cast with care

Baldur's Gate 3 is becoming an HBO series, but it will have minimal influence from developer Larian Studios, and director of publishing Michael Douse is posting all the way through it. Following the show's announcement, Douse stated he was "about to crash out on main," and then proceeded to do just that. Despite only making the most recent entry in the beloved series of D&D RPGs, Larian's BG3 has escalated both the franchise and the studio to all-new heights, and Douse is eager to see the development team and the characters it created given the respect they deserve.
