Larian don't know what their next game is yet, but it won't be Baldur's Gate 4, or Baldur's Gate 3 DLC

Larian Studios, the makers of the enormously successful and multi-"so-many-awards-they-probably-need-ten-new-trophy-cases-to-house-them-all"-winning Baldur's Gate 3, will not be making Baldur's Gate 4, founder and CEO Swen Vincke has announced. Nor will they be making any DLC or expansions for Baldur's Gate 3, for that matter - a stance I 100% respect as the studio starts to think about what's next for them.

Baldur's Gate 3's director was once on board with doing a sequel, but now he's aiming for "a very big RPG that will rule them all"

So, Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian isn’t doing any DLC for the game, or a Baldur’s Gate 4, or anything to do with D&D in the near future. It’s ok, stop crying. As it turns out, CEO Swen Vincke was once on board with some of those ideas, but now he’s got his eyes on creating "a very big RPG that will rule them all", well, as soon as the tech it’ll need is actually a thing.

Yup, the thing you were salivating over isn’t going to be a thing, but it’s ok, there’s a new thing vaguely floating on the horizon for you to salivate over, praise be. To be fair, having just grabbed yet more hardware during the GDC awards, Larian’s earned a chance to pursue its interesting pipe dreams and mysterious ideas, though that seemingly wasn’t always the plan.

Speaking to GameSpot, Vincke’s given a bit more context to yesterday’s big announcement, and how Larian arrived at the point where it was so sure that it wasn’t in the making DLC for and following up on one big success kind of studio. “When it came to BG3, everybody was telling me ‘you gotta make DLC’, you’ve gotta make DLC, and really you should be starting on a sequel,” Vincke recalled, adding that, as you’d expect, this was powered by the game’s success and money-making ability.

Larian is finished with Baldur's Gate: 'We're going to move away from D&D and we're going to start making a new thing'

Bad news for anyone hoping for a Baldur's Gate 3 expansion, Baldur's Gate 4, or anything else Dungeons and Dragons-related from Larian Studios: Speaking at GDC today, Larian CEO Swen Vincke said the company is finished with its D&D adventure and is now moving on to something new...

Larian will not be making Baldur's Gate 4, or any Baldur's Gate 3 expansions

Larian will not be working on Baldur's Gate 4, or any expansions for Baldur's Gate 3, it has just been revealed.

This information comes from the CEO of Larian himself - Swen Vincke. Hosting a talk at GDC 2024 titled "The secrets of Baldur's Gate 3", he closed with this bombshell after roughly an hour of development discussion, funny storys, and revelations about work left on the cutting room floor.

"I told you at the beginning that we were a company of big ideas" Vincke said. "We are not a company that is made to create DLCS [or] expansions. We tried that actually a few times, it failed every time. It's not worth it. Life is too short, and our ambitions are very large, but like Gustaf (the dog whose name was attributed to Baldur's Gate 3 during development) it was always have a warm place in our hearts."

Larian considered having multiple narrators in Baldur's Gate 3 - including Matt Mercer

Baldur's Gate 3 director Swen Vincke has just hosted a bombshell Baldur's Gate 3 talk at GDC 2023, peeling back the curtain at the development process of the GDCA game of the year winner. One of the secrets he spilt was that at one point during early development, the team wanted there to be multiple dungeons masters narrating the game... Including Matt Mercer.

This revelation came during an anecdote about the early ambition of the game, including the desire to make cinematics a major part of the Baldur's Gate 3 experience.

"You'll notice that Divininty: Original Sin 2 had this narrator - this dungeon master. We said you know what, we should make that the thing for Baldur's Gate 3 also". Sven stated in front of a live GDC crowd. He'd go on to showcase a very early cinematic of Minsc, with a narrator providing the running commentary on his actions, even going as far as adding an 'he barks' following Minsc's line.
