Baldur's Gate 3 News

Baldur’s Gate 3, a single-player RPG with no microtransactions, is beating just about every game on Steam

Baldur's Gate 3 is officially out of Early Access, and it's blowing up on Steam. The latest from Larian Studios is not only currently Steam's top-selling game, it's also ranked near the top of the platform's most played games.

Baldur's Gate 3's concurrent player count on Steam peaked at a massive 472,136 players, a figure that's likely to grow further over the weekend, given how often the game has been breaking its launch numbers. This is enough to make it effectively Steam's most played game, if you don't count Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 - two games that always occupy the top two slots.

For reference, this is more than all of Larian Studio's Divinity: Original Sin players put together, and certainly well above Divinity: Original Sin 2's 93,701 peak concurrent - which looks quite meagre by comparison.

Baldur's Gate 3 strange ox

What is the Baldur's Gate 3 strange ox? You'll meet plenty of interesting folk on your way to saving all of humanity; there are bards with a penchant for home surgery, an actual surgeon with a taste for the undead, and then an ox. Just a regular ox. Moo, they'll say, in the hope that you walk by, non-the-wiser.

Of course, it isn't just an ox, is it? Your perception checks will fire as you walk past the docile beast, prompting you to investigate further. To talk to the animal, you'll of course need the ability to... talk to animals. Potion, spell, amulet, whatever works best for you, but you're really going to want to have a chin wag with this particular being. If you haven't checked out the RPG just yet, check out our Baldur's Gate 3 review to hear tales of fireside dirty talk and a monstrosity that wants to drink until he bursts.

What is the strange ox in Baldur's Gate 3?

Early on in Baldur's Gate 3's main story, you'll come across a strange ox at the Emerald Grove but there seems to be something a little off with it. For a start, it's smaller than the other two it's standing next to, and you'll notice you and your companions passively run perception checks once they get into range...

Baldur's Gate 3 'bug' means you're stuck playing with friends forever

It might feel like a Baldur's Gate 3 bug, but on further inspection, the Larian RPG game seemingly includes a feature whereby friends' characters become locked into your party forever, even after they've left and logged out. Our Baldur's Gate 3 review finds a lot to love in the new DnD-inspired sequel, but if you're planning to jump into Baldur's Gate 3 multiplayer, consider this a heads up - you may well find that one slot in your party becomes permanently occupied by your pal's custom character, and that they are impossible to remove. Potentially, this could have long-term effects on your Baldur's Gate 3 save.

How to free Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3

How do you free Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3? Very early on in your adventure, you'll come across a High Half-Elf banging on the door of a pod. She pleads with you to free her from the confines of her imprisonment before the ship crashes. You could follow your Githyanki follower's advice and leave her alone, but that might weigh on your moral compass.

As it turns out, this High Half-Elf is Shadowheart, one of the many Baldur's Gate 3 companions that you absolutely should have on board your motley crew. As we say in our Baldur's Gate 3 review, who you have in your party is up to you, but if you want to get this High Half-Elf Cleric at the earliest opportunity in Baldur's Gate 3, you'll need to follow some quick steps to free Shadowheart from her pod.
