Weekly Circuit Superstars Update

Where to begin! Each week feels both like a day and a year at the same time.

So much work is going on and in different fronts of the game. Carlos and Ciccio have are now testing the latest tracks, dressing them up with environments and doing all the implementation of technical art and race systems that all tracks need. On the cars front, Carlos has some new cars that now need to be tuned by Alberto and set up with beautiful liveries. Alberto has been doing further refinements to the Main Menu, the UI, the animations and the Podium. John has been going back to his controller rebinding work as well as fixing bugs across the board and working with Alberto to refine some screens. On the console porting front, Phil and John are collaborating with our friends Mike and Derek who are external support that joined forces with us to get the game ready to begin an official QA pass. Caro has been working to get a new language integrated into the game as well as tend to localisation & font bugs present throughout the game.

Overall, we have a very strong focus of our efforts on console porting. This is demanding work that needs a lot of our bandwidth since we are going through this process for the first time and it is far from being an easy one. We learn a lot every day and we feel our team getting stronger through those lessons.

That said, here is a summary of where our time is going:

Online Update June 17th 2021

Hello fellow racers!

How is the summer treating you? We hope that wherever you are, you are getting some sunshine. And if its cloudy where you are at, we suggest visiting the sunny roads of Tilksport or Buffalo Hill!

We have been so happy to read your feedback about the latest update to the game (Patch v.0.3.0). Knowing that you are enjoying the long awaited return of the Vost bring so much joy to our hearts. And we have had so much hearing about your experiences racing on Buffalo Hill! We hope that each update we make to Circuit Superstars continues to bring you all together at the racetrack.

As you may know, making online improvements to the gameplay experience was our highest priority for a while. This meant that a couple of things were put on pause while John, the single engineer working on networking code, focused on improving that experience. As a 6 person team, this is the kind of decision making we are doing at all times. Its a constant balancing between what exists and needs to be better, and what doesn't exist and needs to be built. Being on Early Access has helped us a lot to add importance to the things that need to be better. All of you who have played and given feedback have been instrumental in helping us make decisions, and we can't thank you enough for joining us on that journey!

All of that said, this is what we are currently focusing on:

  • Refinements to character animations.
  • Refinements to Front End UI.
  • Localization pass.
  • New cars and tracks in development.
  • Ongoing work on console porting.

[h3]NEXT[/h3]
  • Fix bug in which lapped players who cross the finish line have the wrong placement displayed temporarily.
  • Implementation of Steam Achievements & console achievements.
  • Further bug-fixing (Thank you for your reports!)


Lastly, we want to thank the mods at our Discord, who continue to nourish a safe, fun and engaged community of motorsports fans. Additionally, we want to give a HUGE shoutout to Minardi, our dear friend and community leader. Minardi has not only continued to pioneer fan content creation of Circuit Superstars, but he has also been an ongoing leader in the community. From helping gather people at the racetrack, to making each new member of the community feel welcome. Thank you for your outstanding presence, Minardi!

Early Access Update v.0.3.0

You’re camping in the forest,
the morning breeze flows through your tent.
In the distance, you hear:
a) Ravens
b) A calm lake
c) ROARING ENGINES, SKIDDING TIRES AND CROWDS CHEERING.


The correct answer is C! For where else would you be? Get your helmet and run out of the forest and into the racetrack. RALLYCROSS HAS LANDED IN CIRCUIT SUPERSTARS!



NEW CAR: VOST

Enjoy the clean look of your new Vost and its 4 available liveries, though the luxurious cleanliness won’t last long! This dirt beast belongs amidst the dusty trails of Interstate, Tilksport and the new Buffalo Hill, but it won’t be shy from roaring its way through crowds of opponents on concrete tracks!

Vost has a very special place in our hearts over at OFG, it was the FIRST CAR EVER to be made for the game, and after multiple iterations, it is finally ready to join the growing roster of cars & categories in Circuit Superstars.

Now, the Vost didn’t want to leave its natural habitat when we started building this update, so we had to bring the habitat with us:



NEW TRACK: BUFFALO HILL
Interviewer: And how would you describe Buffalo Hill?
Dev: EXPLOSIVE!


A few meters off of the start line will prove to you why this track is nothing else than EXPLOSIVE! Absolute mayhem is ensued from beginning to end on all THREE ROUTES of this dirt & tarmac circuit.



Will you jump in immediately into today’s Buffalo Hill events on our significantly improved online? Will you test your skill first on Time Trials? Will you do 99 laps of Free Play on the Mini Circuit JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT?!

Whatever you choose, we CAN’T WAIT to hear what you think of Circuit Superstar’s new superstar circuit. Let’s go!

ONLINE PLAY IMPROVEMENTS

After thorough testing of our most recent Public Beta with the community, we have decided to introduce these changes alongside today’s update! As we have mentioned before, making great feeling netcode is an art, and we believe the gameplay of Circuit Superstars truly shines in online races when drivers can compete wheel to wheel. We will continue to improve the online experience of Circuit Superstars, but we feel very confident that this update moved us much closer to where we are going!

[h3]What to expect:[/h3]
  • Significantly smoother gameplay and driving feel.
  • Reduced experience of corrections when you have not collided with other players.
  • During collisions, you will experience short-term corrections as the server reconciles what happened, this is to be expected at this time, especially for when there is a group of players colliding at high speeds. (Clean driving = less corrections!)
GAMEPLAY CHANGES

Cars with slick wheels are now less effective on dirt roads. This means cars in the Supertruck and Rally categories will be more effective off road than other cars.

UI IMPROVEMENTS

We made several improvements to the general audio visual user experience of Circuit Superstars. Let us know what you think!

We really can’t wait to hear what you think of this update. Our official Circuit Superstars Discord Server is the best place to connect and organize with other racers, join community-driven leagues, find racers in your region and connect with the developers.

[h3]ADDITIONAL NOTES[/h3]
  • Your personal settings will be reset, we apologize for the inconvenience!
  • The location of replays will change. To migrate your old recordings first patch the game, then start the game, go to the log files (in game go settings > Extras > log files), copy the race-recordings folder into a folder with a name that is a long number (this will be different for each person but should be about 17 digits long), restart the game.

Chat & Play - Circuit Superstars Dev Stream!

Hello racers!

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 5th at 12:00 PDT, join the devs for a chat and stream of online play! We will be grouping up with the community, playing some races and chatting about the history of the project, our backgrounds as developers and some live race commentary! It will be good fun!

The stream will take place on our Discord server. Check out the #game-updates channel for details!

[h2]Development Update[/h2]
On Wednesday, June 2nd, we released our latest work towards improving the online play experience. We are loving hearing everyone's feedback and experiences. So far, our expectations are lined up with what everyone is experiencing. Significant improvements were made to the general gameplay feel and synchronization. There is still some work to be done to smooth out collisions, but we are very happy to see that we made a huge step in the right direction. We are excited to hear your thoughts!

TL;DR:
  • To participate on the Beta, go to the Circuit Superstars title in your Steam Library
  • Right click and select Properties
  • Go to Betas
  • Select junebeta from the dropdown
  • Beta will be available from Wednesday June 2nd to Sunday, June 6th.
  • Things might be a bit quiet initially as people learn about the beta and sign up, in the meantime, you can use Discord to find lobbies to join!

Lastly, as we sit back from working on online improvements, we will be re-focusing on the following work:

  • Internal testing / iteration of new Single Player experience (previously Arcade).
  • Strong focus on console porting.
  • New tracks in development.
  • Preparing for our next patch v.0.3.0

  • Control rebinding and controller assignment in settings (Dev on this was paused temporarily to focus on Online improvements).
