Devlog #40 "UI Update - Part 2 of 2"

Welcome to the second part of our UI showcase. This time we'll talk more about the meaning behind those various icons you were able to see last time.

To make sure that our players can easily and painlessly enter the world of the game we've decided to prepare some extra info-graphics that will be displayed to you as you play through the game. We will talk more about them in our next devlog - stay tuned for that - but in this one we want to continue our last chat about the icons and UI. Some of the info-graphics will be conveying the most important aspects of the icons in a short and concise way to give you all the information required to survive in the harsh and unforgiving reality of Chernobyl.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

We want to make sure that explanation for the particular icons in-game will be short but sweet - just a second needed to look over them to understand what is happening on the screen and to understand their purpose. Our UI designers are also working really hard to make sure that each of the symbols on your screen is easily recognized - for example red cross with a number under it symbolizes the number of health items available to you while the water tank is... basically a water tank!

Small icons on the right side of the screen (top to bottom): damage resistance, speed up, stamina regeneration, health recovery, health regeneration (over time) and their corresponding negative effects.

Fire, spillage, radiation - those are the big three of our icons and they will let you know not only what is happening in the area and what kind of danger you are dealing with but also the degree of the threat that you're facing and whether you're still within a safe area.

The smaller icons that you've seen in the last devlog will be a visual addition to the effects of certain items that you'll be able to use in-game. We hope that their design will help you in getting used to the effects and soon enough, after some time, you'll not have to read the effects but will simply be able to glance at the icons and instinctively know what they do.

Thank you for checking in this week and see you in the next one!

Kind regards,
Chernobyl Liquidators Simulator Team

Devlog #39 "UI Update - Part 1 of 2"

We're coming back to the topic of UI - this time let's talk about radial menu and icons.

We have discussed the topic of UI previously - at that time we focused on the menus concerning the hints and dialogue boxes. However that is only a part of the grand scheme of things - UI is multilayered as our game is a little bit more complex and featuring tools and collectables system makes it necessary to design a neat UI and menu tailored especially for that particular feature. At the same time we want to make certain areas of the game more clear - to this effect we've been designing specific icons that will be easy and quick to understand.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Radial menu that we've prepared is designed to provide you with all the important information about the items and objects that you've collected throughout your gameplay. Not only all of them will receive an icon that will resemble the original object but you will also be able to read a short description of each of the objects and you'll be informed in a concise way about the effects of each of the items. This way you can make snap decision in the heat of a moment but if you have a moment of time and want to read the actual description - that is also completely fine!

We're also happy to present you with the icons that you will see in the game. Some of them you've already seen in the video above, some might be completely new to you. We'll be happy to discuss more about them in our next devlog - up until then we're wondering if you will be able to tell us what they might mean? If you could let us know in the comments what do you think they represent we will appreciate that a lot - it will also be a test of sorts for us to check if they are as transparent as we believe them to be.

Thank you for checking in this week and see you in the next one!

Kind regards,
Chernobyl Liquidators Simulator Team

Devlog #38 "Beware the flames!"

One of the biggest threats you will face during your first moments in Chernobyl NPP will be fire and flames.

Those of you who have played the playtests version of the game already know that but fire is something that you need to constantly look out for. We've spared no efforts to make sure that they will remain a vital part of the gameplay but at the same time to give you the appropriate tools to deal with them. We've even observed significant feedback from your side regarding the flames and we're very thankful for that. Now let's jump into flames - don't worry, just metaphorically!

What you can see on the videos below is how the flames are designed and what is happening behind the scenes. You might have been wondering how do we created the flames mechanic and we are happy to showcase it and make it as easy to understand as possible. Notice the radius indicator around the point in which we've situated flames. By approaching this radius and entering its range you make yourself vulnerable to the flames raging on in the area. Not only will you start taking damage but you will also experience other effects that will let you know that you're entering a dangerous position - sound and visual effects will be there to highlight the threat and make sure you'll experience that "I want to get out of here!" feeling properly.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Another important thing is to remember that your distance from the middle point of the radius is important - the deeper you enter the "fiery circle" the more damaging the flames become.

Now, if you point your hose at the fire and start extinguishing it you will notice how the radius is getting smaller - meaning that your endavours in fighting the flames are sucessful. Combined with that you'll be able to see, in the real time in-game, how the fire is getting smaller and smaller before it dissipates completely marking your job as done. After you do that you can safely pass through the area that was previously unavailable. However make sure to look around after you do that. You do not want to enter another circle...

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Extinguishing is one thing but making sure that you are always on your toes and ready to be suddenly put in a dangerous situation is important too. Always make sure to look out for yourself - that's the gist of it.

Thank you for your attention this week and see you again soon!
