Episode 1: Loot – Gear System 2.0. series

This document presents a new Design iteration around the Gear System of Curse of the Dead Gods. We are going to expose two points the game fails to address in its Alpha version.
Lack of regular loot

Empowering the character in the current Alpha comes by making Gold or Blood offerings to the Dead Gods at Sanctuaries, rewarding players with Weapons, Relics & Statistics upgrades. It is currently designed as a major upgrade system, that gives players strong motivations and economical dilemmas (Gold vs. Corruption) for a few but strong rewards. The Sanctuary system fails, however, to feed players regularly and delays the pleasure of quickly starting to build « something » from items, as well as quickly experimenting with new things (such as Weapons).
Loot should come more frequently to feed players, without compromising the mechanic of
great rewards the Offerings system relies on.
→ Loot is a key element to stimulate players’ experimentations & curiosity.
Looted Gear

Regular Loot in the current Alpha of Curse of the Dead Gods comes almost exclusively with Gold. Gold is the only thing that you can (at the moment) regularly collect, aiming to accumulate enough to spend it in Sanctuaries and get powerful rewards.
More Loot means basically to introduce new ways to collect “on the fly”. The game’s Gear relies, for now, on:
- Weapons: The main tools players use to defeat enemies
- Relics: Adding special PASSIVE powers, bringing synergies possibilities
The new Gear System will propose Weapons & Relics that have a chance to appear when:
- You open a chest (frequently)
- In some hidden places (frequently)
- You kill an enemy (rare)
Here is what you will be able to find with Looted Gear:
- Common Gear: lesser power gear, although opening some early synergies.
- Rare Gear: Good power gear, but appearing rarely.
- Boss Gear: Gear you can only loot on Champions and Bosses, appearing very rarely.
Sanctuary Gear

Weapons & Relics are gifted when making offerings to the dedicated Shrine. Sanctuaries will help you get more powerful Gear that cannot be found in chests, hidden places or enemies.
You can CHOOSE between 3, and can get:
- Improved Common and Rare Weapons.
- Improved Common and Rare Relics.
- Very Rare/Cursed Weapons & Relics.
