Becoming a Gatewalker - a short story

Hi Gatewalkers,

He was born on the outskirts of the City. From childhood, all he remembered was hunger, cold and dirt. Food was always scarce in their family. Sometimes he read old cookbooks to imagine tasty and fulfilling dishes. As soon as he grew enough to understand something, he wanted to help his family overcome poverty.

The first time he saw Gatewalkers was when his mother took him to the main square. It was announced that the warriors brought some extra meat. He and his mother pushed through the crowd but couldn’t see anything. Masses of hungry people crowded and nobody paid attention to others. It was nothing to be surprised about. After all, can you take care of someone else when you don't know if you will survive another day?

As soon as the Gatewalkers arrived, the crowd was in turmoil. The boy wanted to see them very much, so, ignoring his mother's screams, he tore his hand from her grip and ran away. He passed the crowd and ran down the street. He climbed the nearest tree and finally saw them.

Two men and two women. They transported the meat in a cart on wheels and distributed portions to people. Their faces were almost invisible. Their armour was shiny black with glowing purple ornaments. Warriors looked majestic and proud - some unknown force radiated from them. The boy promised himself that he would do anything to become like them. He wanted to call himself a Gatewalker.

It turned out, however, that joining the Guild took a lot of work. You had to be intelligent and robust even to have a chance to take the initial tests. The boy, hearing the terrible stories about the rigour and hard training, was not afraid. On the contrary, he would get up at dawn to run in the wastelands, climb trees and carry heavy stones. He got hired as a blacksmith's assistant to learn more about the weapons. He practised with a sword he could barely lift. Unfortunately, such hard training ended with a tear in the shoulder - the pain was so severe that the boy couldn't stop crying.

The local doctor immobilised his arm, but the pain continued. Finally, after his mother begged the doctor, he promised to take the boy to the Guild for a specialist to examine him.

The boy couldn't be happier. Despite the pain, he felt a great joy to see the Guild up close. As they approached the stronghold, the enormous walls made a fantastic impression on him. He expected to see the legendary Gate, but instead, a woman with long, blond hair waited for him.

"Come with me, boy," she said and patted him lightly on the back. "We'll see what we can do in a minute."

The boy followed her into a room full of vials, books, weird tools and strange smells.

He sat down on the wooden chair, and it took him a moment to see the little boy sitting in the shadows. He had black hair, bright eyes, and a fierce expression.

"Victor, hand me the bandages," the woman said, and Victor smoothly handed her the paper package. The woman took a weird-smelling ointment from the cupboard and pressed hard on the boy's arm. He felt a sharp pain, but suddenly a blessing relief. "How did you do this to yourself?"

"I trained with the sword", the boy replied proudly. "I want to become a Gatewalker."

"Maybe one day you will succeed. Soon we will need new recruits," the woman smiled.

She was telling the truth - recruitment was announced a few weeks later. The boy volunteered immediately, and his dedication to exercise did not go unnoticed. He instantly passed the exams and got into a preparatory school.

The training was harsh and sometimes dull. Many things had to be remembered - different rules, ways of fighting, and techniques of survival. However, the boy never regretted his choice despite the fatigue.

He finally got the first mission. Without thinking, he chose the sword as his weapon and set out to gather some herbs in the Ice World. He and his best friend went through the Gate for the first time. Even though they had been learning this for years, they couldn't help but get excited. They were squeaking with joy and throwing snowballs, which caught the attention of the Nilak pack. They wanted to return to the portal as soon as possible, but Nilaks united into one, enormous monster. They learned about creatures like this, but seeing them in real life made them freeze. His friend managed to teleport and brought help.

Two armed Gatewalkers went straight into the action. Their movements were quick and smooth, almost like they were dancing. The boys watched as their attacks combined into one and accumulated to explode with enormous energy. It was their first real lesson.

They remembered it for a lifetime. Perhaps due to extreme caution and cleverness, after many years, together they became the strongest Gatewalkers in the Guild. Many great but challenging adventures awaited them, but maybe about it another time.

And now a puzzle for you! Which NPC is described in this story?

Gatewalkers Weaponry #6 - Dark Orb Catalyst

Hello Gatewalkers!

Today you will see one of Gatewalker’s most exciting weapons, the Dark Orb Catalyst! The Dark Orb Catalyst is a weapon you could try out in the Demo, however, we made some significant changes. We made a graphical and lore redesign. Also, we adjusted the skills and improved visual effects. We love the outcome, so we want to share it with you.

The core of the weapon is made using the technology of the Ancients. The long middle part looks a bit like a staff, but unlike it, both ends of the weapon are ended with special shields around which circle energized ancient crystals.

Gatewalkers interested in dealing with medium-range attacks will find this weapon particularly interesting. Due to its shorter range, Dark Orb Catalyst users must stay closer to their targets than, for example, force staff wielders. However, the Dark Orb Catalyst attack has a larger area and an exciting skill set.

Some of the skills can spawn healing orbs. If the mob dies after the attack, there is a chance that purple orbs will spawn from his body. These orbs are made of energy that can restore a bit of your HP and give your weapon extra damage:

So, let’s explore the skills!

Dark Swing: This is the main attack. It’s a wave of energy within a close-/medium-range. This attack gives you a slight chance to spawn some orbs.

Dark Blow: This is a powerful forward strike. It has a more extended range than the basic attack and deals more damage:

Dark Pierce: This skill uses crystals to deal significant damage. The attack is fast and mid-ranged:

Dark Surge: A massive high-damage vortex of energy forms around the caster. The vortex deals bursts of damage to all targets for a short period. It has a mid-range. It also spawns orbs from the enemies!

What do you think about this weapon? We wanted the Dark Orb Catalyst to be not only interesting to use but also to look in a very intriguing way. It’s also an interesting variation from other magical weapons, such as the Force staff. Please let us know your thoughts in our Discord channel:

Food and Drink

Hello Brave Gatewalkers!

Are you in the mood for a snack? In Gatewalkers, food is an essential part of the game. Gatewalkers is an aRPG game but combined with survival elements - which means that, for example, you have to eat and drink during your expeditions to stay alive. However, foods and drinks give you extra buffs, so it's always good to have some snacks during your expeditions!

Let's see how you can create a basic dish. You can prepare food in the Guild's kitchen or use a fireplace during your missions. First, check the list of products you have to obtain. Each recipe requires at least two items for Tier 2, three to four ingredients for Tier 3, and so on - the list of ingredients becomes longer with each Tier, but the benefits become stronger. In the beginning, most ingredients can be found in the Forest World - so be sure to equip yourself with water, mushrooms, meats, monkeybat ears and other ingredients. This way, you can create essential dishes during your expeditions. Later, you have to make sure you can make a fireplace! To do this, you'll need some stones and wood. It's good to have spare wood and stones in your inventory because a fireplace can be used for cooking, but it also is a source of light and warmth. The mechanics seem very easy; however, gathering resources can sometimes be challenging!

In Gatewalkers, food has to be consumed to keep the player alive and temporarily improve one's health, stamina, restoration and so on.

What's important, the buffs from one category (food/drink) don't sum up. It means that if you eat, for example, first a soup and then a sandwich, you will have only sandwich buff, not both! However if you eat a soup (food) and a fruit cocktail (drink) you will have two buffs - one from the food and one from the drink. The buff duration of every food/drink lasts for 300 seconds.

In the game, starvation is possible; when the hunger or thirst level reaches zero, the player dies, and you must restart your current mission. Every time you die, the durability of the items you have equipped decreases, and you lose a percentage of the resources (such as wood, ore etc.) What's worth noticing, all survival mechanics are working during your missions. When you spend your time in the Guild, for example, crafting, the hunger and thirst levels are not dropping.

Surians and Volarians

Hi, Gatewalker!

Welcome to your second lesson. I’m Elana, and I’ll tell you a little bit more of the two humanoid races you can meet behind the Gate - Surians and Volarians. Who are they, and what do they do?

Let’s start with a story.

While traveling beyond the Gate, Gatewalkers saw all kinds of monsters. Creatures were so terrible and dangerous that they made the blood run cold. That’s why Gatewalkers were surprised the first time when they reached the Surian village in the Forest world.

They saw a village resembling a human camp. There were huts, tables, and various items. At first, they thought that some people lived there until they saw Surians. They looked strange but also moved on two legs. Thanks to careful observation, Gatewalkers noticed that Surians were writing a lot, painted pictures on stones, and worshiped some gods. Also, they decorated their homes and sewed clothing. Interestingly, they liked to grill fish, mushrooms, and monkeybat ears. The Surian race resembled humans in many ways, but... A lot of Gatewalkers who spied on Surians never returned to the Guild. What happened to them? Nothing was certain, but the Guild started to treat them like enemies.

Moreover, Surians seem truly dangerous - they can use Ancient technology. We docoded their language, and their knowledge about technology, plants, or illnesses is enormous. It soon became obvious that Surians are also traveling through the Gate! A while ago, some of the guild scouts reported that small groups of Surian soldiers are moving in the Ice World. We started to worry more and more about our safety. Some Surian tribes seem to be visiting the Ice World very frequently. They abandoned the traditional Surian look and have been seen wearing warm furry coats…

Recent discoveries show that they have developed new abilities, and they also have a shaman - who produces complex energy explosions, which shatter ice and create a myriad of sharp ice shards. That’s why, you need to be very careful when you see a Surian!

The Volarian race was discovered much later - they live in the world of Sky Rocks. At first, they were not considered a humanoid race at all. They resemble giant, almost prehistoric birds. Only after a few expeditions it was noticed that they live in clusters and their body composition - if not for enormous wings - resembles those of humans. Volarians fly very fast and move efficiently, they also use bridges. Our guess is that they have built the drawbridges between the rocks - maybe flying is more tiring for them than walking?

Anyway, Volarians don’t sleep in nests but live in old windmills. You can find many of them in Sky Rocks. Did Volarians build them? We are not sure… Observing them became even more interesting when it was discovered how technologically advanced they are. In addition to developing advanced weaponry, they have been able to master some of the machines of the Ancients! Interestingly, unlike Surians, scouts noticed no cult objects or cultural elements. On the other hand, the hierarchy in their society is clearly visible - the Volarians adhere strictly to it.

Volarians are fast and aggressive. They even talk very little to each other, and their language is swift and slurred. Though it was possible to find some records in their language, they do not appear to be keeping books. Also, unlike Surians, they don’t grill food but rather eat raw meat of creatures they breed - like plant turtles.

Advanced technology and Volarians' impulsive nature are an explosive combo, so you should be especially cautious when traveling through the Sky Rocks! Volarians do not like watching or retreating when they see a human. They attack right away, and they often travel in groups.
